Two Women fined for walking for Starbucks

What rule have they broken? I don’t understand. Two of them met - yes can meet one other person - they’d driven 5 miles - surely that’s ok?! - and they had a Starbucks each which the police said was a picnic?!
Why are they keeping takeaways open if it’s agaisnt the law to get one? I took my kids to the park, the coffee shop was open for takeaway. It was freezing. We got a hot chocolate each. I’m too scared to do so again!

Walking with a Starbucks. Not for. They were outside at a beauty spot.

They’re not allowed to travel in a car together?

Orf1abc · 08/01/2021 13:19

A link would be helpful.

IrenetheQuaint · 08/01/2021 13:19

They travelled separately! These women have not broken the law in any way. Derbyshire police are ludicrous and ignorant.

Whatwouldscullydo · 08/01/2021 13:20

Did they drive separately?

Are they a bubble?

Ultimately they probably can't prove much and take aways are open so no rules broken...

Isnt there sone actual crime to be solving?

Superketchup · 08/01/2021 13:20

They travelled individually and met there.
Apparently the police are saying five miles was not in the spirit of lockdown.

I'm sure someone will tell you that Yabu and they were killing people. But I don't get this. How is walking with a coffee different to walking without? I'm not a fan of the police. This is really showing they are not dealing well with the new laws.

How is this contributing to the spread of covid? When you can do to drive thru or walk in takeaways. What difference does it make if you walk with it or sit in your car or take it home?

XenoBitch · 08/01/2021 13:22

Sounds like the police went way over the top. I hope these women fight the fine.
A country park near me has a cafe hut type thing that is selling drinks right now. I fully intend on walking my dog there and then getting a cuppa to warm my hands up. But that would be somehow against the rules?

Shaniac · 08/01/2021 13:22

The fines aren't legal and wont be paid. Same as the first lockdown nearly all fines were overturned because they werent based on any rulebreaking.

Plussizejumpsuit · 08/01/2021 13:23

Ah it's in Derbyshire if I remember rightly they were massively ott in the first lockdown. Also just to say I'm pro lockdown not some covid conspiracy nutter.

Whatwouldscullydo · 08/01/2021 13:23

Picnic?
Not in the spirit?

No actual laws broken though sounds like police making it up as they go along

ThatDamnKrampus · 08/01/2021 13:23

But meeting one other person (not in your household or bubble) is only supposed to be for exercise though isn't it? Amd driving for exercise; exercise must be longer than journey?

Chambored · 08/01/2021 13:23

I think the point was why drive 5 miles somewhere when you can no doubt exercise locally without the need to drive.

Superketchup · 08/01/2021 13:23

I can’t understand how take aways are open - but we can’t use them? Or am I meant to get the drink and take it home? What’s the point of opening them and then fining people for using them? Why is there no common sense here? My dd - 5 - sat and drank her hot chocolate on a wall. Is this now a criminal offence?

Already two threads on this Smile

Superketchup · 08/01/2021 13:24

But the guidelines are ‘should’ be local area. Not must. And 5 miles tbh - well it’s hardly hours and hours is it? Ten minutes in the car?

I think the major reasoning is that travelling across into Derbyshire from Leicestershire is a no-no. The coffee thing is ridiculous though.

Bohemiagirl · 08/01/2021 13:26

I went for a walk in a local park yesterday. Lots of people sitting on benches chatting with takeaway coffees, only groups of two. The community police were moving them on, telling them that the parks were open for exercise only. I guess sitting on a bench chatting isn't really exercise.

Superketchup · 08/01/2021 13:26

Oh! I couldn’t see any others.
It just made me 🙄. They’ve hardly organised a rave or had a house party. They met one person, five miles away and walked with a hot drink. How is this now a criminal offence?!

Buzztothemoon · 08/01/2021 13:28

I’m a repeat offender then 😂😱 - On days I don’t run, I still try to get out for some fresh air and usually walk laps of the park venti Starbucks in hand!

Orf1abc · 08/01/2021 13:28

Ms Allen, who lives in Ashby-de-la-Zouch in Leicestershire, said: 'I genuinely thought someone had been murdered... my car was surrounded... one of them started reading my rights and I was looking at my friend thinking ''This must be a joke''.'

So they were sat in the car. They may not have travelled together, but she's clearly acknowledging they were in the car.

There are legitimate reports of police being overzealous, but the 'air hostess make up artist with anxiety' is an attention seeker.

BQueen · 08/01/2021 13:30

It’s concerning they think it’s up to an officers discretion, the police don’t make the law.

Cummings used the line “spirit of the lockdown” on his infamous Barnard Castle adventure.

Cattitudes · 08/01/2021 13:30

That is crazy. The only time ds will leave the house is if he is meeting a friend for a walk.
