We are now in disaster mode

“We are now in disaster medicine mode,” it said.
“We are no longer providing high-standard critical care, because we cannot. While this is far from ideal, it’s the way things are, and the way they have to be for now.”

I see that this means rationing medical care. So those who would have previously been given a chance will now not.

This is really significant!

And that was only a few of them as most or many had INSET days on Monday.

I have no idea about Vit D. It is possible that the link is tenuous. It may be that Covid is seasonal but the Vit D lobby have latched onto a simple observation that the first wave drop in early summer due to natural increasing Vit D levels. This is far too simplistic an observation epidemiology is far more complex.
Relying on Vit D is probably quite dangerous since we really don’t have a clear idea what makes some people more vulnerable than others. As long as you don’t overdose it won’t do any harm.
If someone had observed that you were more likely to die if your surname began with the letter S would you think it was significant. Isolated anecdotal observation is not helpful.

We only closed schools 4 days ago.

London hasn’t been to school since last term

Not meant to mix at Christmas

Although it’s likely to require this lock down to see cases fall. Hopefully in next week we’ll see it

annevonkleve · 08/01/2021 10:56

Vitamin D and fresh air does nothing to help with that

I don't know about the fresh air bit, but I thought that people were being advised to take vitamin D?

55larry · 08/01/2021 10:59

I currently have Covid and the only have mild cold symptoms but it was suggested by Zoe Covid study that I get a test as they are trying to find any symptoms that Covid causes. If I hadn’t been on the app I would be going out as allowed in lockdown spreading the virus without even knowing.

I wouldn’t have been allowed a test by NHS as I didn’t have one of the three main symptoms so this shows why the virus is spreading so quickly.

phlebasconsidered · 08/01/2021 10:59

You should be aware that schools are not closed. The dfe have changed the language to "partially open", removed the cap on bubble size and said only one parent has to be a keyworker. I am on my break. I have 75% of my class in. I still can't socially distance. Overall 70% of my school are in. This will NOT stop spread. Or even slow it down.

Unfortunately people are bloody daft and assume the rules don't apply to them... Including people who should know better.

E.g. I have a friend who is an HCP who works on this stuff, knows all the figures. She still tried to persuade me to mix households. The conversation went like this: "Come over for Christmas lunch." "Not a good idea, I'd rather not mix households" (in relatively low tier, so legally allowed). "Oh, go on, go on go on," [Mrs doyle style]. "No really, I don't think it's a good idea." [Passive aggressive head tilt] "Why, do you think we've got covid?"

Reader, she tested positive for covid just after Christmas. Symptoms came on on Christmas day.

If people who bloody well should know better don't behave sensible, we really are stuffed.

(Sorry for the rant - but the amount of pressure she put on me, and the passive aggressive way she did it really pissed me off. Glad to report she has now recovered - it was, mercifully, a mild case - but I'm significantly older, and my DS has asthma... thank god I stuck to my guns.)

The truth is that no-one knows. My guess is that we are far more likely to socialize close together indoors than outdoors in cold weather. Combined with cold-weather making our immune systems less effective is probably why ALL viruses tend to spread more in winter.

Kljnmw3459 · 08/01/2021 11:02

It is scary. I had hoped that masks, social distancing and the tiers would have helped reduce the numbers. Perhaps they have, which is an even scarier thought.

I think many people have faced difficult choices about work and school.

Sorry for those of you not used to epidemiology. The most common first letter of surname is S so in a large random sample of population you would expect this initial to be most common. Although if this disease does have a genetic predisposition then maybe looking at surname frequency would be a good idea.

DameFanny · 08/01/2021 11:04

@screamingfemale

well *@tokenbalm* vitamin D has a far longer history of being beneficial to health than the vaccine does, and a much better safety profile. Anyway the vaccine won't stop you from getting or transmitting Coronavirus, it just means you're less likely to have severe symptoms, much like having a good immune system will do for you. Not sure whats up with society that everyone has succumbed to the billion dollar marketing budgets of big pharma, begging for synthetic, untested chemicals when a good diet and fresh air is provably as effective at keeping your immune system strong.
Sadly this is absolute screaming bollocks @screamingfemale, since a good immune system is only good for the infections it knows how to deal with. Hence the dangers of novel viruses.

Yes vitamin D may help. Yes, eating properly and exercising is good for you. But plenty of people who've done everything right have still been laid low by Long Covid, so your scaremongering about vaccines is dangerous bollocks.

Sorry I couldn't untag you from the quote token

I'm not saying don't take vitamin d, I'm saying it doesn't alter your genes and isn't the cure all for how your immune system works.

Was going to ask myself as certainly not happening in my trust

@Confusedgrievingmum

People still trusting the company that is free of ANY liability for adverse effects that one may suffer from getting the 💉, ie Bell's Palsy, anaphylactic reaction, or death which are reported by many. Plus the fact that this supposed v hasn't been proven to stop asymptomatic transmission. And for those who say that they are not injecting the virus, care to explain how they claim to create "immunity" from the said virus that has NOT BEEN ISOLATED. 🤔

www.nairaland.com/6350097/gregory

Also, polio cases decreased significantly prior to the introduction of 💉, increasing again once polio 💉 ws introduced. Most people don't know this. 😬

Scaremongering lies @Confusedgrievingmum. The virus has been isolated, unless you're believing the Freedom Alliance grifters who have little evidence but lots of struck-off statuses among them.

Polio was decreasing, due to infection control measures including lockdowns. A vaccine enabled eradication in many countries without the need for such measures.

You've been scammed.

MarshaBradyo · 08/01/2021 11:08

Cara yes I think mixing will still have happened

I’m hoping cases will start to fall from now due to that

@TwentyTwentyOne

All those working for the NHS directly involved in Covid cases, I'd like to ask you a question.

Do you see a trend amongst these patients? Is there something that links them all or many of them or are the patients background, age, circumstances all random.

I don't ask this to be goady. I ask this because if there is a common link e.g. overweight or unfit or smoker then people need to act on that info NOW along with staying in and keeping away from others.

I've not really seen a trend. Yes it seems to hit the older generation hard, but we are seeing more cases of under 50. Some have pre existing conditions, some don't. Covid doesn't seem to pick and choose. A colleague had it back in may. They ended up ventilated. Male, 35. Fit and healthy. Still off work now.
CaraDuneRedux · 08/01/2021 11:12

Changes surname to Xavier...

Remembers correlation is not causation...

Damn.

DinosaurDigestive · 08/01/2021 11:13

The very scary thing for me is how many people in real life that are constantly minimising how bad things really are.

They use this as justification for them not to stick to guidance and they fail to see that they're placing others at risk by their actions.

Things are incredibly bad in hospitals as has been known already and also stated on this thread yet so many out there assume it will "just be like a nasty cold" or "a bad flu"

I'm aware that for some people they don't feel incredibly bad with it but obviously that isn't the case for everyone yet so many assume they won't be terribly affected by it. Despite being told of potential effects of long term Covid, for example.

Then there are lots of others who feel like they don't need to stick to any rules and have been like that from the very beginning. I dread to think how much their actions have affected others.

I am scared for myself and my family. We have stuck to the rules and are desperately trying to avoid this but it is only a matter of time here as the new variant has spread here like wildfire.

Yet so many here are treating this like any other day - traffic still just as heavy and everywhere still open. People going out for a wander around for the sake of it and others still carrying on having parties and in and out of different people's houses nonstop. People refusing to self isolate also.

The hospital is so full and obviously the usual ones that patients would be transferred to are as well. It is scary.

Someone even took it onto the maternity ward as they lied when asked if they had any symptoms. The potential impact of that especially when some mothers on the ward had babies in special care is extremely concerning. It could so very easily have been passed onto staff there who are caring for very unwell and premature babies and the unit is already understaffed as it is.

I can only imagine how many other times this has happened elsewhere also.

Peggyslantern · 08/01/2021 11:13

And for those who say that they are not injecting the virus, care to explain how they claim to create "immunity" from the said virus that has NOT BEEN ISOLATED. 🤔

It's very clear that once we're through the worst of this crisis and thinking about what we can learn from it, one of the things we need to address pretty aggressively is conspiracy theories and basis scientific illiteracy in our population.

That said, I think denial is a really basic human response to catastrophes. You see it in every single disaster that lots of people refuse to accept reality until it's too late. So I have a lot of sympathy for people going 'the NHS is overwhelmed every winter,' 'fresh air helps most people survive,' 'I won't have the vaccine because of xyz' etc. It's just a tragedy too, because things are very serious at present and people do need to follow the rules to play their part.

I'm battling an elderly father who is adamant he is doing what he's told except he's going out cycling and going up ladders to do DIY. I have tried to say he risks there being very limited care if he is unlucky enough to have an accident but he won't listen. There's only so much you can do. We can all only control our own actions really.

My thoughts are with everyone in the NHS at the moment. I can't imagine what it's like for you and I know so much is being asked of you.

LakieLady · 08/01/2021 11:15
@Raspberry681 Really no need to thank me I'm just doing the job I love and I was trained to do,

BUT, in the 30 years I have worked in the NHS I have never seen anything like this- staff are physically and mentally exhausted and the infrastructure that allows us to do our jobs are being pushed to absolute breaking point.

During the first wave, patients were mainly in the 60+ age group, this wave we are definitely seeing more younger patients 40+ and many have died too.

It also going to take years for the NHS to recover
DSS told me yesterday that most of the people in hospital with Covid caught it when they were in hospital for other things. Of course, as a tree surgeon, he knows all about this sort of thing. Hmm

And he's a T1 diabetic, so clinically vulnerable.

He has a friend who's a senior paramedic in a big city and said friend is currently off sick with stress, partly caused by the constant changing of rules/procedures because of Covid but mostly (according to DSS) because he's been having to deal with so many young people with MH problems.

DSS is not locking down, is still seeing friends and family members, still having people round and so on. He thinks he's immune, because a lodger of his tested positive last spring and he remained negative.

I had to really hold my tongue.

Unsure33 · 08/01/2021 11:16

@CaraDuneRedux

is that up to date for the fact that Russia lied about their figures .
Their deaths have increased from 50000 to 186000 ?

Also countries are recording deaths in different ways still.

QueenPawPaws · 08/01/2021 11:18

Anyone who suggests "boosting your immune system" is welcome to tell me how to do that, when my own body kills off my white blood cells making me prone to infections
It's offensive to people who have destroyed immune systems from medication or cancer to harp on about trusting and boosting your immune system when the people with the worst immune systems can't do anything about it
Except shield, and wait for the vaccine
