We are now in disaster mode

“We are now in disaster medicine mode,” it said.
“We are no longer providing high-standard critical care, because we cannot. While this is far from ideal, it’s the way things are, and the way they have to be for now.”

I see that this means rationing medical care. So those who would have previously been given a chance will now not.

This is really significant!
@MarshaBradyo I was replying (or trying to reply) to a comment where a poster had said that the media just wants to keep us all scared. I read MN all the time but not that au fait with how to copy a message and then reply to it. I clicked on reply, but the message wasn’t showing..
@MrsBasset click "Quote" and that will allow you to do the individualised replying (unless like me previously you click "Quote on the wrong message Grin

Yup thread posted on this exact issue on the 31st December, OP was largely shouted down

Thank you. You wouldn’t think I’m in my 30’s 🤪

My heart goes out to all the NHS staff in the front line of this. Their mental health must be suffering so badly and PTSD will be a major problem for all of them. I'm saddened and disgusted by things I see people writing and posting all over social media that its all a lie. I have family and friends working in the South East and London hospitals. It is far from being over exaggerated. The NHS being overwhelmed is happening and it will continue to get worse. Everything is moving in the right direction with treatments and vaccines but we are a long way from the end of this. Truly terrifying times.

user1472151176 · 09/01/2021 19:50

I read an article from a psychologist that the reason people have conspiracies that the pandemic isn't true is because they have a hard time dealing with the enormity of the subject matter. Looking for an alternative explanation for something that frightens them. I'm not a psychologist so I couldnt pass judgement but maybe it is a mental health issue? Maybe the non believers just cant handle the reality of the situation and find it easier to cope this way?

@Angrymum22

As with most areas of medicine related to Covid-19 the research into comorbidities is in its infancy. However there is increasing evidence that certain conditions are predictors of poorer outcomes in those patients. Sorry for the scientific speak. I have an interest (dentist) in a possible link with existing periodontal disease (severe gum disease). It is linked to heart disease and diabetes, not as a causative factor but it often accompanies these other disease suggesting it has a genetic link. Gum disease is the last thing medics are concerned about when admitting a critically ill patient. But a quick assessment may help calculating individual risk factor and subsequent treatment regime. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7719810/ Research is ongoing but if this disease becomes endemic it’s just another tool for medics in their assessment.
@Angrymum22 if you're still on the thread... what is classed as sever gum disease? Your comment has me worried a bit, I must admit!!

cant believe there are still ant masks and anti vaxers parading about having to be controlled by the police

ExpatAl · 10/01/2021 00:04

Yes it’s bad. Remember the despair of Italian doctors? Their tears describing days spent choosing who should be given a chance to live.

alreadytaken · 10/01/2021 07:45

Anti-vaxers still deny reality as they die

Then why are the Nightingale hospitals still closed?

CherryRoulade · 10/01/2021 09:42

@Pinkfluff76

Then why are the Nightingale hospitals still closed?
Because there are no staff for them. Many trusts are running on significant staff absences. They have doubled the number of critical care beds (or more). Their patient base acuity has risen. They are required to provide clinicians for ambulance transfers. It’s not about the physical space; it’s about the staff availability.
Fizbosshoes · 10/01/2021 09:45

@Pinkfluff76

The hospital space is no use without appropriate staff. That has always been the problem with nightingales. Already nurses are caring for up to 4 x the number if patients they would , normally. There are no extra to man the nightingales.
CherryRoulade · 10/01/2021 09:47

We have also made a decision, as a nation, to have a base position of far lower ratios of staff and hospital beds to patients than most other G20 countries.

Smiledwiththerisingsun · 10/01/2021 09:49

The fact that this government are not throwing all the money needed at the NHS and the vaccine programme makes it very clear that they just don't care about anyone other than themselves. It's criminal.

Please don't vote conservative ever again. Please don't forget this.

Smiledwiththerisingsun · 10/01/2021 09:50

It's disgusting that there are not enough staff for the Nightingale hospital to open. Shame on the Tories.

While I hate the Torys and think they are fuckers who have destroyed the NHS I am not sure they could have anticipated needing to staff 4x as many ICU beds as normal... Having said that maybe if they hadn’t been so incompetent in their management at least so many staff wouldn’t be off sick which would help significantly
pinkstripeycat · 10/01/2021 12:42

But as long as 2 women can drive 5 miles outside of their local area the virus won’t spread. Idiots don’t care and are selfish. Currently I have one neighbour whose 21yr old daughters BF is coming and going. The dad (of adult children) of the family who doesn’t live there is in and out. Another neighbour just filled their car with bags and toys and off they go! Lots of groups of adults (the rule is 1:1) walking past my house to a local beauty spot at the bottoms of my road. can see them from my lounge window while I sit on my sofa by the way.

Actually, they could and they did - "Operation Cygnus", carried out in 2016, buried because they didn't like the fact that acting on it would cost them money:
www.bmj.com/content/371/bmj.m4499

Also worth remembering as Jeremy Hunt tries to re-invent himself as the voice of reason and the back-bencher standing up to Boris's feet-dragging over handling the pandemic, that the very same Jeremy Hunt was health secretary at the time the government chose to bury the findings of Operation Cygnus.

CherryRoulade · 10/01/2021 13:02

CaraDuneRedux Indeed, indeed. They actively chose not to plan for a predicted pandemic.

Tbf,think we need to see how the vaccine program goes in next week or two
Ffsnosexallowed · 10/01/2021 13:21

Issue isn't just in hospitals. It's flaring up in care homes again. Know of 2 local ones with c80% of staff and residents now positive.

MagicSummer · 10/01/2021 13:23

@Smiledwiththerisingsun - that is just a ridiculous comment. Do you honestly think any Government 'just don't care about anyone other than themselves'?

Nothing on earth would make me vote Labour.

peridito · 10/01/2021 14:08

Magic I honestly believe that the majority of the current Tory government prioritise business and money making before the good of people like me .

Saying "nothing on Earth would make me vote Labour" smacks to me of someone with a closed mind who refuses to alter their views despite what is happening . Now that is a ridiculous action .

cocodomingo · 10/01/2021 14:17

While 2, 3, 4am are sleep times for patients, the hospital night shift is a working shift and staff remain awake and must communicate. Can you imagine the diktat to work the majority of the working day (it is effectively that for night shifts) In silence. Much as patients complain about noise at night...many admissions, emergencies take place at night...ear plugs are available in some trusts. But you will never replicate or reasonably expect a hospital environment to be silent as home..many patients make themselves sick with annoyance in being unable to let this go

Thanks for reminding us of that. I am guilty of hoping he would take over from Boris. But they are all vultures. Look at Tony Blair. Trying to stage a comeback as Covid tsar. It's so horrible being maipulated by all these fools and rogues on top of the tragedy of the virus.
