How busy are the streets where you are?

Are they incredibly quiet now in lockdown or fairly ok?

OP posts:
PickAChew · 08/01/2021 09:11

Sorry for being insensitive @msssm. My eldest has pretty much locked himself away and barely left the house over the past 10 months and the decline in his fitness is worrying. If I can tempt him out of the house, he struggles with even a slight uphill. :(

PickAChew · 08/01/2021 09:15

And yes, our next is the same. They started doing this in the November lockdown.

Flambola · 08/01/2021 09:21

I’ve just driven into Liverpool and there seems to be just a bit less traffic than usual.

Forgetmenot157 · 08/01/2021 09:25

Seems quieter.... Not the same fear as last time tho where you would cross the road if you saw someone coming... And happy to stand and talk to neighbours

Tearsfortiers · 08/01/2021 09:25

No change in the traffic at all here! It hasn't eased up at all.

Changi · 08/01/2021 09:32

We get very little traffic anyway. Mainly delivery vans. Nobody has driven past this morning. There are no wheel marks in the snow.

MRex · 08/01/2021 09:39

Same number of walkers going to the park, very few cars when we go by the main roads. A raft of ambulances a week or so ago, still more than normal but not crazy levels.
No idea what the centre of town is like, I haven't been there in months. It was quiet early morning when DH went before Christmas for food. Deliveries since then, so we've just no idea

Angel2702 · 08/01/2021 09:41

Main roads quieter but not as quiet as March.

partyatthepalace · 08/01/2021 09:51

Central London is v quiet in the West End, has been since March, but totally dead right now

Haven’t been to my local centre but in London the local centres were busier than the middle in the semi pre Christmas lockdown

emmathedilemma · 08/01/2021 09:55

@TransplantedScouser I suspect a lot of students / young professionals / those who are furloughed might have gone home to their families rather than live alone or be in flatshares. Quite a few of our office graduates decamped to their parent's during the first lockdown as working from home in a flatshare wasn't really feasible.

Darkbloom · 08/01/2021 10:01

Supermarkets are busy but streets surrounding are like a ghost town

Blueberriesonmyshreddies · 08/01/2021 10:21

Nowhere near as quiet as the first lockdown. I work in a supermarket and I was the only car on the road on my journey in on some mornings. Definitely not the case now, it's fairly busy on the road, I sit in queues of traffic.
The store is definitely quieter at the moment as the panic buying isn't happening this time round.
An awful lot of customers telling me they have had 'it' recently. They seem to be either more willing to say or the numbers are increasing quite steeply (as the statistics are stating so don't know why I am surprised when they tell me).
The fact people are sharing so much information is making us all a little anxious, but we trudge on. We all need to eat don't we.
I do worry about the elderly regulars I no longer see coming in, even though they came in through the first lockdown. I hope someone is now doing their shopping for them. I wait and hope to see them when they get their vaccines in the spring.

xHeartinacagex · 08/01/2021 10:32

Not as quiet as first lockdown, but definitely quieter than it has been. Less cars on the road.

Quite a few people out in the streets, but they look like they are just out walking or running for exercise.

MrsFrisbyMouse · 08/01/2021 10:40

Roads still quite busy - but I'd expect that as people choose to use cars rather than public transport for short journeys. (Bus, tube and trains seem very quiet.)

Streets quiet, the odd neighbour having a chat here and there.

Parks busy (ish), lots of people out walking or exercising with one other person or alone. The odd small group of parents talking at 2m distances. But no big groups or gaggles anywhere. (I've really enjoyed seeing all the big green spaces near me used in lockdown - has really shown how important and vital they are for the community.)

Shops in use, but not crazy. Pretty much everyone in masks and being respectful of space.

In summary , it's not a ghost town but is subdued, but people are following the rules and it's def not 'normal'.

LucilleTheVampireBat · 08/01/2021 10:45

It is 'normal' in my area. Roads busy, streets busy, the business park where I work is as busy as ever, all the offices are staffed, including mine.

itssquidstella · 08/01/2021 10:54

Not noticeably quieter. I'm in north London and the traffic is as heavy as usual; there are also loads of people (myself included, I'm not griping!) in the parks and queuing for the grocer/butcher/baker/coffee shops.

In the first lockdown it was definitely quieter, especially in terms of traffic. I think so much more stuff is open this time around, and the list of essential jobs is so extensive, that I'm not surprised not to notice a difference.

torthecatlady · 08/01/2021 10:57

I'm in Wales in a high covid area and the roads are as normal (you would not think we were in a lockdown). The supermarkets are awfully busy and people are not adhering to social distancing rules.

IPead · 08/01/2021 11:03

Dunno, not been anywhere. Nothing open so nowhere to go!

Mediumred · 08/01/2021 11:06

Live in London and work quite centrally. My shift finishes around 1am and I cycle home and it’s quieter than at any time since the first lockdown eased. Hardly surprising I guess, no pubs/restaurants open, even takeaways banned after 11pm, it’s too cold to just be hanging about, the night buses I see are almost empty. I pass two 24-hr shops, the one nearest home always has people hanging about chatting to the staff without any masks on but that’s about it.

user1497207191 · 08/01/2021 11:09

Pretty similar really. Just been past our village bakers/pie shop. Same number of tradesmen vans parked outside and, as usual, they're ignoring the rules and crowding the shop, not wearing masks. Must be "essential" to get their mid morning pie or bacon butty mustn't it???

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 08/01/2021 11:12

I had to pop into town yesterday to pick up a prescription and i was shocked at how busy it was.

My mum who is a keyworker (manager of a care home) said the roads are as busy as normal shes pretty pissed off with people not following lockdown.

Purplethrow · 08/01/2021 11:16

There seems to be no difference where I live , no wonder our numbers are 1346 /100,000

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 08/01/2021 11:20

No idea , only been out once since 22nd December and that was to a test centre a week ago ( I knew I hadn’t got it but peace of mind for my husband) . Tested and came home , the roads seemed busy but I didn’t venture into shopping territory so couldn’t tell you about footfall
I’m off to get the b12 injection today but that’s literally 5 minute walk from my home on a quiet street
I’ll tell you next week when I go to Tesco . We’ve plenty of food so I won’t need to go out until probably this time next week

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 08/01/2021 11:21

Quiet id say though ive not been to the village

I have been to the beach and thats much busier, it was heaving on Saturday

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 08/01/2021 11:22

Oh I can’t compare to the first lockdown cos i pretty much didnt leave the house for weeks!
