Are they incredibly quiet now in lockdown or fairly ok?

OP posts:

Slightly more traffic than the first lockdown, I assume because many more people are working this time, but much much quieter than the last lockdown in the autumn, which was a free for all.

South west market town.

Belinda554 · 08/01/2021 07:05

Roads are quieter, but people...oh my god! I live in a beautiful area and it’s rammed with walkers.

Heartofstrings · 08/01/2021 07:15

I popped to sainsburys on Tuesday. The roads were back to being eerily quiet

Figmentofmyimagination · 08/01/2021 07:23

Walking the dog to the park in the first lockdown felt like an episode of doctor who just before aliens are about to land - so weirdly quiet - this is a normally bustling suburban market town.

This time feels a lot more like normal although still pretty quiet.

Maybe I’m just getting used to it!

Pastanred · 08/01/2021 07:24

busy really - nothing like march despite same rules in place. more workplaces now covid secure

noone i know is working from home so seems business as usual here even tho its not

Mindymomo · 08/01/2021 07:25

I live in a village in Surrey. After 6 pm you hardly hear a car outside, most traffic in the daytime is vans. I swear some neighbours get up to 6 different deliveries each day. My husband takes our dog out at 6 am, when he used to meet other dog walkers, he’s hardly seen anyone this week. I walk dog lunchtime and mainly see a few families walking, but it’s been so cold out, I think it’s stopping people going out.

Yet are local cases are still rising alarmingly.

Nonamesavail · 08/01/2021 07:26

Exactly the same

DrunkenKoala · 08/01/2021 07:27

Pretty quiet.

I went to Sainsbury’s on Monday afternoon which is inside a shopping centre, it was all really quiet including the car park and the drive there and back.

DD and I have been going to the local park yesterday and Weds afternoon and there were a few people about mainly families and dog walkers. As we walked to the park most of my neighbours cars were parked up on the street so it seems people are staying home or staying within walking distance.

Parbor · 08/01/2021 07:29

Beach town, very busy on sea front (in March it was quiet), roads as normal (in March I drove to the supermarket and saw only 4 other cars on the road)

Sammilouwho · 08/01/2021 07:30

My street is quiet (which is great because during lockdown 1 a lot of teenagers used to congregate and set fire to the local playground, every day) but we live near a main road and you can hear how busy the traffic is on there.
I have noticed around our area though that there has been a police presence, I assume it's because of lockdown 1's antisocial behaviour.
According to local groups though our town centre is very busy and even some barbers and shops that shouldn't be are open.

PumpkinPie2016 · 08/01/2021 07:30

I am a teacher so still going out to work. The roads seem quieter than they normally do. Less people about I think.

Called in a fairly large co op on the way home the other night -normally,car park is fairly full, busy inside. Other night, 4 cars in the car park and quiet inside.

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 08/01/2021 07:31

Very quiet, the roads are empty and the few shops that are open are empty. It's very eerie

CarryOnFestiveNamechanging · 08/01/2021 07:31

Very quiet indeed, in terms of pedestrians. In lockdown 1 it was like Piccadilly Circus with everyone out for daily walks. I suspect the cold temperatures and icy pavements have played a part in this.

Less traffic than normal but not significantly so. Much more than lockdown 1.

Bitbusyattheminute · 08/01/2021 07:31

Totally normal. And our transmission rate is already going through the roof here.

emmathedilemma · 08/01/2021 08:10

I've been out for a walk or run a couple of times and it was much quieter than before lockdown. The park was still busy, lots of kids in the play area, queue for the coffee van, and lots of people out for a walk or run. The main roads seemed a bit quieter but nothing like they were in spring. I'm sure there's still tourists in town too!

emmathedilemma · 08/01/2021 08:10

Wasn't much quieter that should say!!

itsgettingweird · 08/01/2021 08:12

Driving down our motorway at 5.30pm you wouldn't realise there is a lockdown!

Streets seem quieter town end but not all shops are open but local parade just as busy as usual due to nature of shops but people on the whole are SD, wearing masks and are doing what they can.

RingtheBells · 08/01/2021 08:18

Our road is rammed with parked cars that barely leave their houses, we are mostly retired though and those that aren't are probably wfh, so not much going out going on here.

As an aside I'm not surprised new car sales have gone down, you don't need a new car if it is just used as a bollard outside your house.

TransplantedScouser · 08/01/2021 08:24

My DH works on the railways - amazing how as soon as lock down was announced the number of people having essential travel with very large suitcases increased 10 fold.

The only people currently being seen on the rails all seem to have suitcases

Hoppinggreen · 08/01/2021 08:26

No idea, not been out apart from to walk the dog and that’s in the woods at the back of our house.

Hoppinggreen · 08/01/2021 08:29

Also, why the bloody Hell is Next open?

RingtheBells · 08/01/2021 08:32

@Hoppinggreen

Also, why the bloody Hell is Next open?
It's not, there is very few people in there and they are doing click and collect at doorway, I returned some presents yesterday, it is easier and much less people than going to post office to return stuff
Hoppinggreen · 08/01/2021 08:39

Oh I see.
Not criticising anyone for going, if a shop is open you are allowed to go. I was just surprised.
And yes, much better than joining the PO queue

itsgettingweird · 08/01/2021 08:41

@Hoppinggreen

Also, why the bloody Hell is Next open?
I'm not sure it fully is. I ordered something 10 days ago so well before lockdown to collect yesterday and had an email to say it's delayed.

I assume they are running limited warehouse and front of store staff?

RingtheBells · 08/01/2021 08:46

Our Next has a table in the doorway and a big sheet of Perspex up and you just hand the item over through gap in bottom of Perspex and they just go and sort it out at till, likewise you can pick up orders from there, it was very well organised.
