Do you consider getting a takeaway risky?

Just wondered. Mentioned to friend on WhatsApp that we are treating ourselves to a takeaway from a local restaurant with dessert etc for DH’s birthday this weekend and she was shocked that we would risk it with the infection rate so high where we are.

I hadn’t considered that it could be spreading via takeaway food etc - surely they have to take precautions?

No

Standrewsschool · 07/01/2021 20:19

No, we’re averaging one a month. No different to buying food from a supermarket.

Level75 · 07/01/2021 20:19

No

HermioneWeasley · 07/01/2021 20:19

No, why would it be.

PlanDeRaccordement · 07/01/2021 20:19

It is a risk. Not sure I’d call it “risky”. A local cafe near me only doing takeaways was just shut today as a staff member tested positive for Covid. So it’s shut while they sanitise it and all the staff test and isolate.
But from what I understand supermarkets do not close for deep sanitise if one person catches Covid. They do the track and trace. So it could be less risk than food shopping. Depends a lot on how well each individual place is complying.

Jrobhatch29 · 07/01/2021 20:20

We had a takeaway curry last night. We get dominos maybe once a week too as a treat for the kids. They have contactless delivery. Takeaways are one of the few things left to look forward to and low risk

FabbyMagic · 07/01/2021 20:20

It probably is a small risk given hygiene practices are often a bit dodgy in takeaways even in normal times! But we’ve done it regularly throughout and not (knowingly) caught it yet.

MrsWhistledown · 07/01/2021 20:21

I don't consider getting a takeaway risky, no.

We've had many takeaways in the last 10 months.

RedskyAtnight · 07/01/2021 20:21

Takeaway in itself - no.
If there's lots of people in and around the shop - possibly. Bu you can always stay away until it's quiet.

Frombeantocupyoufup · 07/01/2021 20:22

I didn’t think it would a risk but friend was saying what if the person making your food unknowingly has the virus, what if they’re not that clean or good at following practises etc.

It’s a little treat for us and now I’m stupidly doubting it as we have been so careful it’s made me feel like I’m doing something reckless! Which I know I’m not realistically

Absolutely not
Have had our usual weekly takeaway

sausagepastapot · 07/01/2021 20:22

Not at all.

Katie517 · 07/01/2021 20:23

No it’s not risky, people aren’t catching COVID from takeaway food. Restaurants need all the help they can get at the moment and are pulling out all the stops to provide decent takeaway options so we should be supporting them unless when all this is over you want them all to remain closed permanently! Funny people don’t have the same concerns about supermarkets....

borntohula · 07/01/2021 20:23

😂

BlueBaubles12 · 07/01/2021 20:23

No, not in the slightest. Had one a week throughout as a treat from loads of different places with no issues whatsoever.

StatisticalSense · 07/01/2021 20:24

The food isn't going to be risky to if you are having it delivered or they are properly managing collections the risk will be extremely low. If they are allowing walk ins and regularly have a queue or a number of people waiting inside the shop to collect there is potentially a risk of transmission from the other customers.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/01/2021 20:24

No, we have one a week.

Frombeantocupyoufup · 07/01/2021 20:24

We have over the last few weeks and during lockdown previously as well.
Glad to see other people think the same, she was so shocked and telling me off a bit... I was a bit like Confused

OP posts:
HerRoyalNotness · 07/01/2021 20:24

Nope, we’ve been getting one every week. The Driver leaves it on the porch and texts us to say it’s there, no need to interact

Beecham · 07/01/2021 20:25

Definitely not.

The issue seems to be more about aerosols than surfaces, esp with the new variant. So get socially distanced delivery if possible but I wouldn't worry about packaging etc

Spied · 07/01/2021 20:26

We've had the odd takeaway ( pizza)
Put it on plates and dispose of the packaging outside straight away.
I would usually have got a salad with it too but I haven't since Covid. Feel safer if the food is piping hot and cooked. Maybe that's crazy butConfused

OverTheRubicon · 07/01/2021 20:27

I am doing takeaways too, but do still think there is risk to it.

Have you seen in the kitchens? Few are wearing masks and many takeaway cooks are at high risk of catching covid, relying on public transport and often low paid and therefore in crowded living conditions in areas with higher rates. The cooked food should be fine, but it is then handled and served, and delivered also likely by someone from a high risk group.

OverTheRubicon · 07/01/2021 20:27

Meant to add too that most cooks are low paid and often zero hours, so have high incentives not to isolate if instructed and/or get tested if mildly symptomatic.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 07/01/2021 20:27

No . We are actually trying to cut it down to once a month only

dementedpixie · 07/01/2021 20:29

We have one every couple of weeks. I dont feel its high risk
