Do you consider getting a takeaway risky?

Just wondered. Mentioned to friend on WhatsApp that we are treating ourselves to a takeaway from a local restaurant with dessert etc for DH’s birthday this weekend and she was shocked that we would risk it with the infection rate so high where we are.

I hadn’t considered that it could be spreading via takeaway food etc - surely they have to take precautions?

Nope, not in the slightest

MoirasRoses · 07/01/2021 20:30

Why are people suddenly terrified of this again? It’s more contagious not more deadly. We get takeouts regularly, once a week plus takeout coffees & cakes etc if we pass a coffee shop. Hasn’t even crossed my mind to be a risk. But then, I’ve never been scared of catching it. I’m young, healthy & very unlikely to become seriously ill. I did indeed catch it in December from our removal men when we moved house. It was fine. Felt pretty rubbish, got better.

Morsmordre · 07/01/2021 20:30

Nah.... crack on. 😉

Cheerios444 · 07/01/2021 20:31

I put it in the oven first at 180C....cases are over 1000/100000 where we are so Im not taking any chance for a simple act of putting in the oven

We've been getting takeaways weekly since first Lock down and we're all fine

DenisetheMenace · 07/01/2021 20:35

Have to be extremely careful here. We decant the food straightaway, dispose of containers (which theoretically could carry risk) outside, wash hands well and enjoy.
If it’s Chinese or Indian food, I give it a quick blast in the microwave too to zap any nasties.
It’s our only pleasure from the outside world!

allgirlscandance · 07/01/2021 20:38

Love getting a takeaway. Always decant, remove and dispose of all packaging. Never touch the packaging then food. Always wash hands.

MajesticWhine · 07/01/2021 20:39

It's not something I worry about. We have them regularly and it is one of the few treats you can have.

AntiHop · 07/01/2021 20:40

We've been getting take away once a week. Low risk.

WankPuffins · 07/01/2021 20:40

Nope.

Eating fish and chips, just delivered.

WankPuffins · 07/01/2021 20:41

It's my only treat.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/01/2021 20:42

Every single interaction we have with each other carries risk. Humans are notoriously terrible at assessing and managing risk. You are relying in all cases on yours, and the others, precautions and on luck.

Our issue in this case is that we overestimate the risk of 'novel' things like pandemics and underestimate the risk of familiar things like eating crappy food Grin

It's the sugar and fat in the meal that'll get you, not the covid. Statistically. Maybe. I haven't done the maths.

userxx · 07/01/2021 20:43

@WankPuffins

It's my only treat.

Exactly, may as well shoot myself now.

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 07/01/2021 20:43

Nah, we’re having once a week still.

OMG: just realised there’s more than one way of interpreting this 🥴
I mean, Chinese and Indian food reheats in microwave beautifully. Pizza, fish and chips, burgers/kebabs not so much.

Scaredykittycat · 07/01/2021 20:44

I worried in the beginning. Refused take aways. Over that now

Nat6999 · 07/01/2021 20:46

Takeaways are now banned in this house for the moment after ds insisted on ordering himself a pile of Chinese on Saturday night & now thinks he is dying. He isn't, he just has suspected salmonella after not listening to me to not order from the takeaway with a one star hygiene rating.

notalwaysalondoner · 07/01/2021 20:46

No way. We’re getting them way more often to support the hospitality industry. I strongly believe it’s the right thing to do.

Fangdrew · 07/01/2021 20:47

Not half as risky as going to the supermarket (where I caught covid).

CeeJay81 · 07/01/2021 20:47

We get take away from our local chippy often. They have a good system, noones allowed in the shop. Friday and Saturday nights you have to book online for an allocated slot. At other times you can chose online or at the door. It's family ran and most of the workers are one household.

If your local take away have good measures in place, the risk is minimal.

maddiemookins16mum · 07/01/2021 20:49

Nope. We’ve had regular takeaways throughout.

inkandpen · 07/01/2021 20:50

Yes, it's a risk in the sense that every additional human interaction is a risk (I wouldn't be worried about the food, it's the people). But it's a pretty small additional risk.

Mreggsworth · 07/01/2021 20:51

The actual food content would be safe I imagine. Guess a minuscule risk from the packaging. But guess you can just wash hands once you've handled the packaging. But can't say it's been a worry of mine. I live in an area with high rates and have been getting weekly take aways.

planningaheadtoday · 07/01/2021 20:51

I'm shielding and more paranoid than most and regularly use our take away. They deliver and leave outside so it's completely contact free.

I have the oven preheated to 200oC and I carefully transfer everything into it for 5 mins. Then I spray surfaces and wash my hands.

Corona on external surfaces is easily killed in a brief flash in hot oven, and no piping hot food when placed into containers can support living virus, it's just too hot. So I know the inside of the containers are safe.

Salad and cold bits go directly into the opened bin.

We've had dominos ( I bin the packaging for this), Curry and Chinese this way In the last month. I'm supporting local businesses in the best way I can.
