Do you consider getting a takeaway risky?

Just wondered. Mentioned to friend on WhatsApp that we are treating ourselves to a takeaway from a local restaurant with dessert etc for DH’s birthday this weekend and she was shocked that we would risk it with the infection rate so high where we are.

I hadn’t considered that it could be spreading via takeaway food etc - surely they have to take precautions?

@FlamedToACrisp I think this is totally understandable and a very different thing, really. We are lucky to not be considered vulnerable and we have no contact with family or other vulnerable people, even outside. Hence we feel it's such a low risk as to be not worth thinking about. If we were seeing someone vulnerable we might think differently.

So tough to get online shops at the moment - hope you're managing ok

@MoirasRoses

Why are people suddenly terrified of this again? It’s more contagious not more deadly. We get takeouts regularly, once a week plus takeout coffees & cakes etc if we pass a coffee shop. Hasn’t even crossed my mind to be a risk. But then, I’ve never been scared of catching it. I’m young, healthy & very unlikely to become seriously ill. I did indeed catch it in December from our removal men when we moved house. It was fine. Felt pretty rubbish, got better.
I mean, seriously?!?

Why are people terrified?!?

Did it ever occur to you we're not all young and healthy?!?

HaveITheRightToHoldYou · 07/01/2021 21:32

I did consider it risky in the beginning but I have relaxed a bit. However have only really had stuff from the excellent local chippy & he uses sanitiser/ washes hands after serving each person & you can see all the food being selected & wrapped in front of you, only 2 customers in at a time & main door open for ventilation.

Enjoy op.

Coronavirus: How safe are takeaways and supermarket deliveries? www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-52040138

CloseSchoolsProtecttheNHS · 07/01/2021 21:34

It’s not as safe as NOT getting a takeaway so hard to justify really. Unless you’re not fussed about catching it.

Frombeantocupyoufup · 07/01/2021 21:34

I always get them delivered, contactless.
I figured it’s less risky than supermarket tbh having seen people pick up multiple things put them back, cough over things etc

Not going out ever again and starving to death would massively reduce your chances of catching covid I mean how can you justify it..... Hmm

Really interesting to see the different views on this

Aren't you somewhat bored?

Isn't the point that we're all meant to be somewhat bored atm? The point is not that it's a big risk, it's that it's an extra risk. Probably much less than the supermarket, yes - but the point is that you'll still be going to the supermarket as well. I'm not saying nobody should have a takeaway - we've had one or two - but it's about being aware that every additional interaction is a risk of increasing community transmission, which is what the lockdown is supposed to reduce. Lots of people round here are merrily sending their kids to school somewhat unnecessarily, meeting lots of friends for individual walks, getting takeaway coffees etc - none of it's against the rules, but it's just going to prolong the whole saga and puts vulnerable people at greater risk.

Bollss · 07/01/2021 21:39

If you're not clinically depressed you're doing it wrong then, eh?

HairyToity · 07/01/2021 21:40

Not heard of anyone catching covid from a takeaway. We've all had covid in our house (the 3 year old caught it first at nursery), and will be having a takeaway this weekend.

inkandpen · 07/01/2021 21:40

FFS it's not about YOUR RISK. It's about community spread. It might be you picking it up from the supermarket and passing it on asymptomatically to the takeaway guy who lives with his vulnerable mum, or whatever. Why do people not get this??

Are you saying people arent worried about their own risk then??
RaspberryCoulis · 07/01/2021 21:43

Not in the slightest bit risky.

Scoobandlaurs · 07/01/2021 21:43

We liv e in a rural area with no real takeaway options so not reallly an isss use but definitely would if we could as nothing else to enjoy!

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 07/01/2021 21:43

God no ! At the moment it is one of life’s pleasures !

Presumably the takeaway guy wants to keep.his job and is thankful were all selfish bastards though?
3littlewords · 07/01/2021 21:44

I've been getting takeaways from our local restaurant once a week because a) i love the food b) i enjoy a night off cooking c) I'd very much like to able to visit said restaurant in person once this shitshow is over so will do what I can to keep it in business

BeeDavis · 07/01/2021 21:46

No it isn’t Takeaways remained open throughout because people don’t gather there so risk of transmission is low. That was exactly what BoJo and co said when they closed other hospitality in March. Takeaway worker guy could pick it up anywhere.

But do continue to utter expletives at people for “not getting” things you’re just making up.

Dontsayfuckorbugger · 07/01/2021 21:47

Every reputable take away kitchen has to take every precaution to stop the spread of covid, just like many other work places. My daughter works for a well known pizza take away and they are very strict and heavily monitored with full PPE - from kitchen staff to delivery drivers. They have to adhere to government guidelines. She has been told it is instant dismissal if they are broken in any way. I'm sure the majority of take away places are just as strict and are fully respectful of covid guidelines

inkandpen · 07/01/2021 21:48

No, I'm not saying people aren't or shouldn't be worried about their own risk, of course some are and some should be. I'm just fed up of so many people on here and in real life constantly repeating the mantra that they're going to do whatever (eat out, meet friends, whatever whatever) because they're 'not that worried about catching Covid'. My point is - that's not the point. Community transmission is the point.

Who on earth is having 15min contact less than 2m apart from their food delivery person? At most it's open the door, delivery person wearing mask and gloves, hands over food, door shut, all over within seconds! And that's assuming you do an open door handover, do they not have contact free delivery where you live?
Travelledtheworld · 07/01/2021 21:48

I am getting increasingly more suspicious about infection control in all our local cafes and restaurants. Especially take away coffees.

MadameBlobby · 07/01/2021 21:49

Plus our takeaways all do contact free deliveries so no elderly mum killing here.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 07/01/2021 21:51

I haven’t risked one since March, with food shopping I know we have washed the packaging and done the cooking. You can’t do that with a takeaway.

Haven’t seen anything on the new variant if it’s more transmittable on surfaces than previous ones and they are still mentioning hand washing so presumably surface transmission is still a risk. Low compared to airborne though surely.
