It’s back under a new name “clap for heroes.”

OP posts:
SirGawain · 06/01/2021 15:05

Well, it’s cheaper than paying them what they deserve!

RaininSummer · 06/01/2021 15:05

No. Didn't clap last time either.

wildraisins · 06/01/2021 15:06

I did it once (the very first time for the NHS) and I thought that was nice and unifying... I thought it got a bit much when it was happening every week. Trying to revive it not seems a bit silly so I wouldn't participate now. But, live and let live. If people want to then I don't see a problem with it.

LadyofMisrule · 06/01/2021 15:06

No, but I won't stop trying to vote in a government that believes in paying key workers more.

DuchessofDerbyshire · 06/01/2021 15:06

No.

I hate mass behaviour of most kinds.

And I hate more being made to feel I ought to do something.

Tootsee · 06/01/2021 15:08

Didn’t before and won’t now. However all those saying nhs workers etc. deserve a pay rise, remember that it is only a small proportion of these who actually have had to work with Covid patients. That small proportion do deserve a very large bonus for the thankless work they do. However, if it is the same this time as first lockdown, many other staff will be sitting twiddling their fingers with nothing to do, as all routine appointments are cancelled. Either that or they will be practicing their Tiktoc routines.

I’m speaking as a Community Hospital nurse, whose hospital has temporarily been closed. I’ve been transferred to another Community Hospital, which was already fully staffed! There are actually times when the staff now outnumber the patients!
Am I having to work harder? No.
Do I think I deserve a pay rise? No
I am just grateful that I have a job, with ok wages, great sickness and maternity conditions and job security!

WilsonMilson · 06/01/2021 15:08

Fucking no. And I reserve the right to judge any of my neighbours who do. Absolute bullshit, we’ve all had quite enough of all of this now and I’d find it beyond demoralising to be back to that shit once again.

SilverBirchWithout · 06/01/2021 15:10

Someone has just said this on Twitter:

“I am behind write to your mp every Thursday at 8pm asking for end to pay freeze for nhs and living wage for all essential workers“

Much more useful action than clapping 👏

catfeets · 06/01/2021 15:10

Oh god no, please tell me this isn't back Sad. My arsehole neighbour was the only one on the street doing it and used it as an excuse to go mental for 10 mins. It was the worst point in my week.

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/01/2021 15:12

Ridiculous embarrassment. People want paying a decent rate for the job, not clapping. No one I know in the NHS for example (and I used to work there so know a few), wants to be clapped!

TheVanguardSix · 06/01/2021 15:12

No.
I can't clap for an inept system. Carers chose their jobs and many carers are good at what they do. My own DH is a frontline worker who got covid from patients (more likely this than any other scenario, but who knows? Maybe he got it from the bat he was chatting to at the bus stop. It's a moot point really).
Thank you carers. I am grateful. My husband is one. 30+ years he's given to the NHS. But no, no clapping. I feel too disappointed in the way the NHS has been manhandled and undermined over the years to clap for the poor carers being thrown under the bus by the very system they believed in and held together with sellotape and diminishing faith.

carlaCox · 06/01/2021 15:12

Last year we had someone on our street who, instead of clapping, set off fireworks. Even though it was too light outside to actually see them. Every single week.

LadyJaye · 06/01/2021 15:12

Nope.

I have a lot of HCP friends who loathe it, and would far prefer people take five minutes to email their Parliamentary representatives to lobby for better NHS support.

In the long term, never vote Tory.

vodkaredbullgirl · 06/01/2021 15:13

As a carer I don't need clapping for thank you.

Plus all the noise drives my dogs nuts.

umpteennamechanges · 06/01/2021 15:13

@Bluntness100

No, when it was first put forward it was a lovely gesture. A way for the nation to say thank you. But then it became every week. And it all got a bit ridiculous. People used it as a social event, and a way to bully others into doing it. Some even brought friggen Musical instruments. It got to the stage the nhs staff wanted people to stop. It lost its meaning.

So no, I won’t do it again, but when we get out of this, then yes, I will. Once.

This.

I'll continue to stick to the rules and not vote for the Tories (again).

Bloodyfrostycar · 06/01/2021 15:17

No. Instead I will be supporting those working extra hard to deal with this shit show by:

  • not expecting the impossible from my DCs teachers and understanding that many of them are also trying to look after their own children etc
  • not taking my family for a wander round B&M/Tesco for an afternoon's entertainment
  • Keeping some distance from those working in shops etc, wearing a mask properly and using hand sanitiser
-not putting extra strain on the emergency services by acting like a dick I'll also be offering help to my elderly neighbours and profusely thanking those who are helping my shielding parents who don't live nearby

Finally, I will be fully supporting better pay and conditions for nhs staff/care workers/teachers etc even when there is no longer a national emergency.

Bookriddle · 06/01/2021 15:18

Nope, nope nope!

My wife doesnt need a load of attention seeking twats outside her work!
What she needs is more nurses and doctors, at her trust they no longer have the space for critical patients, the consultants are now at a point where they are picking who dies and who gets a chance at life, they lost a 45 year old this morning, they have a 22 year old fully ventilated and has 0 underlying health conditions!
Oh and more fucking pay for the shit they are dealing with now, i will not be surprised if my wife or colleagues end up with some form of ptsd!

Fuck this clapping shit

YukoandHiro · 06/01/2021 15:18

Nope

LeSangeEstDansLarbre · 06/01/2021 15:18

@fullofhope100
*“I’d rather everyone took that 5 minutes to email their MP to lobby for a pay rise for frontline NHS staff, and a realistic rise in NMW to give a realistic wage for the other support staff it’s supposed to celebrate, such as carers and people working in the food supply chain.”

How about we do both?*

Because the pan banging virtue signalling allows people to hypocritically and superficially demonstrate support for services without doing anything to make a change, or actively making it worse. The government enthusiastically applauding while at the same time refusing a pay rise for nurses; the people playing god awful instruments and at the same time having friends over during lockdowns; people clapping while still going to A&E for a broken nail - all these shouldn’t be able to use this trite little display to salve their consciences. Own the problem or do something to make it change. I’m fed up of people not being willing to put their money where their mouth is.

LouLou789 · 06/01/2021 15:18

It’s Clap for Heroes, ie people who’ve been key workers throughout. My son has worked his socks off at a supermarket. He said to me “I’d rather have a pay rise than applause”. I imagine most feel the same!

whoamongstus · 06/01/2021 15:20

No.

Ssandy52 · 06/01/2021 15:22

No. I don’t believe in this lockdown. I won’t be doing it.

Sonicthehedgehogg · 06/01/2021 15:24

@BrightYellowDaffodil

Fuck, no.

It was bad enough the last time round - the first time was a nice gesture but after that it was performance virtue signalling. Now it's been rebranded into the even more patronising "Heroes". HCPs aren't heroes, they're professionals doing a skilled job that should be respected and remunerated accordingly. To call them "heroes" is the equivalent of a pat on the head for 'being brave'.

I'm sure the woman who started it means well, and thinks it will bring people together for the (hopefully) last stretch but...no.

This with bells on. I'd rather a bit of respect for my clinical work and experience. Also yes to the previous poster who mentioned that the unintended outcome was that it actually bred resentment towards NHS staff. We didn't ask for the claps, or the discounts. We just want to crack on.

Oh and if some of you could stop coming to ED with headaches and hangovers, that would be fab. We're a bit busy Grin

BigWoollyJumpers · 06/01/2021 15:25

If you look at the new updated list of who actually counts as "carers" it is pretty much everyone..... including you and me and the cat. So no. I didn't the first time, and I certainly won't this time.

Cheeseboardandmincepies · 06/01/2021 15:25

No. They deserve a pay rise not a bloody clap ffs.
