Fan-fucking-tastic. And I don't swear. Honestly don't know how I'm going to get through this.

He did say ‘some curbs’ ‘may’ be needed. I wouldn’t panic just yet.

cheninblanc · 05/01/2021 17:47

They also can't promise that all children will return to school before summer holidays. I'm lost for words at how messed up this actually is

Earlgrey666 · 05/01/2021 17:47

I am panicking about this, it's all so depressing and neverending.

Covidasaurus · 05/01/2021 17:49

Measures will be needed for some time, undoubtedly at least another year - I don’t think that shocking. Not committing to schools going back AT ALL before summer - that is SHOCKING imo.

Londt · 05/01/2021 17:50

Of course we will. Not everyone will be vaccinated by then (or ever, potentially) and it will have mutated.

Mintjulia · 05/01/2021 17:50

Those curbs might be not flying without a vaccination certificate or something fairly restrained like that. I wouldn't get too gloomy until we have more info.

Mousehole10 · 05/01/2021 17:51

They are pretty stupid if they think most peoooe will stick to their rules by next winter.

Dementedswan · 05/01/2021 17:51

Wait what?! Schools could be closed for rest of academic year?

CoronaIsWatching · 05/01/2021 17:51

He's always wrong so I wouldn't pay much attention

Shit! I didn’t catch that bit. Fuck!
Northernbeachbum · 05/01/2021 17:51

I'm fed up....its neverending

PicsInRed · 05/01/2021 17:52

It is manifestly unacceptable to expect the entire population to live like this indefinitely, for years and years. It's like the movie I, Robot "keeping us all safe at home". It's a no from me.

AgeLikeWine · 05/01/2021 17:52

The scientists might want some restrictions to remain in place that far ahead, but once the vulnerable are safely vaccinated and hospital admissions & deaths fall to levels which does not interfere with the normal running of the NHS, it will become politically unsustainable to keep them in place.

Bunbunbunny · 05/01/2021 17:52

He didn't say that, might be restrictions. Depends how quickly the vaccine is rolled our
Dementedswan · 05/01/2021 17:54

Ah I see!

Theres no need for panic, but we need to be prepared to collectively say "no".

They are absoutely preparing us, telling us, how it's going to be.

Mousehole10 · 05/01/2021 17:56

I’ll join you in the saying no. I’m not prepared to live under restrictions after spring.

RaspberryCoulis · 05/01/2021 17:56

Chris Witty, dementor in Chief, the man who never smiles in case his face cracks.

He's the most miserable man on the planet.

blue25 · 05/01/2021 17:56

I’m hearing online learning is being planned until the summer holidays. Can’t believe it, what a nightmare.

TheExtraGuineaPig · 05/01/2021 17:57

I didn’t see it.. but I have read on Twitter that he said he couldn’t guarantee schools would be back before the summer holidays. Is that right?

bathsh3ba · 05/01/2021 17:58

From the BBC: He says if everyone sticks to the rules "really strongly" and the NHS is vaccinating as fast as it can “then our hope is the lockdown will be enough”.

But he says this will require a "collective effort", with everyone "buying into this really seriously".

In the longer term, the chief medical officer says we all hope the vaccination programme will mean we don’t need restrictions in the future.

But he warns the virus "is not going to go away", saying we "shouldn’t kid ourselves that this just disappears with spring" - although the risks will go down.

“Hopefully we’ll have spring, summer, autumn, possibly winter as well, with almost nothing in place, once the full vaccination programme is through. But we just need to be aware of the fact this is not a problem that just disappears.”

Well, pretty guaranteed it's not going away then, isn't it? The NHS can't possibly vaccinate to that schedule and people have quite understandably had enough of restrictions.

'Hope' from Whitty is not worth the breath it took him to say it. It's meaningless.

God I hate these scaremongering threads. He didn’t say that. Why do people post links to things they haven’t read or don’t understand.

He absolutely did not say we would still have restrictions next winter. Nor does the bloody article you linked to say that.

I feel so sorrry for these guys. They get asked questions about worst case, and they say something like we hope and think this will be enough and we should be fine, but if something goes wrong then worst case could occur

And someone screams “worst case is going to occur” then runs round their house with their pants on their head, before starting a thread on mumsnet so others can join in with the pretend stuff said.

CoffeeandCroissant · 05/01/2021 17:59

What he said was: "We might have to bring a few (curbs) in during the next winter, that's possible, because winter will benefit the virus."

DarceyDashwood · 05/01/2021 17:59

Chris Whitty is clearly a very cautious man. This is a good thing IMO. He’s never going to give absolute gaurentees or promises - and we shouldn’t want him to. We get enough of that from Boris. The fact is until the vaccine is rolled out significantly he CAN’T say anything about what the future will bring. We are in a taking it a week at a time situation.

It doesn’t mean things won’t improve, or won’t be back to normal. He just isn’t going to give empty promises!! And If we do need to keep a few things in place - eg masks in shops or hospitals - well I’d take that if it means other restrictions can be lifted. But that’s just me.

It’s not time to panic. We’ve just got to wait and see and take it a day at a time.

Op do you suffer from anxiety? Why are you taking worst case as a given? Then trying to scare people? Your thread title is not what was said. It is your misleading interpretation of it.
