dad waiting for ambulance

my dad is having issues with breathing but no temp or cough or anything. Dad is 70. His lungs are burning and arms are heavy. He called the gp and they are sending an ambulance. He hasn't been tested or anything. Is the gp just being cautious? Anxiety is high atm.

I’m sorry, I hope he will be ok. I imagine those symptoms could be a sign of other things too and the G.P wants the best for your dad.

Orf1abc · 05/01/2021 15:06

The paramedic (it may be an ambulance or a car) has sufficient PPE to properly assess your dad safely, it's more efficient to do this at the patient's home than risk them coming to the surgery and potentially passing on the virus.

I hope your dad is OK. If they've not arrived yet, perhaps he could pack a small bag in case he needs to go in? Charger, pyjamas, mobile/ tablet etc.

Porcupineintherough · 05/01/2021 15:07

Burning lungs suggests a lung infection of some kind. The gp is wise to get this checked out and a&e sounds like the best place to do it because they can run far more tests there than at a doctors surgery. I wont tell you not to worry because, honestly, who could help it but it could be many things and hopefully you'll know more very soon. Do you know which hospital he'll be taken to?

viques · 05/01/2021 15:10

I think your dads GP was being sensible. Paramedics will be able to assess your dad in his home rather than him making his own way to a and e or the surgery. If he needs admitting or further assessments then the hospital staff will have that information to guide them.

I hope he has been seen now and that a decision has been made to support your dads health.

TheFerretsSleeping · 05/01/2021 16:35

Hes been taken in for tests and things he been givin morphine must be quite sore as he hates painkillers. Ecg has been done but no results yet. He's not sounding well at all. They haven't tested him for covid though

viques · 05/01/2021 16:51

ferrets, you must be so worried. Do keep us informed, I know it’s a cliche but he is in the best place.

Take care of yourself.

TheFerretsSleeping · 05/01/2021 17:20

Hes been so careful with covid. He sent a text earlier not making much sense prob the morphine. Getting take away for dinner.

OP posts:
viques · 05/01/2021 18:02

Morphine based texts are a bit spacey, I once read an imaginary newspaper while on pethedine, it’s strong stuff.Has he been moved onto a ward yet? Can you try to find a direct line to the ward to speak to a staff or charge nurse?

Enjoy the take away.

flapjackfairy · 05/01/2021 18:03

They will routinely test for covid. Everyone gets tested on admission .

TheFerretsSleeping · 05/01/2021 18:13

Dad seems to be under the impression that he's not going to get tested at all. On ward now waiting for xray. Heart attack checks have come back normal. We had Indian for dinner. Think I'm more panicked than him. He's telling me to chill

OP posts:
Suzi888 · 05/01/2021 18:31

When we went a few days ago, they just took our temperatures as a covid indicator. Perhaps they did this and if he didn’t have a high temperature then they don’t test?

TheFerretsSleeping · 05/01/2021 22:53

So dad has some fluid on his lungs and an inflamed sac around his heart. Still waiting on a few more tests to be on the safe side. Hes sounding really breathless oxygen levels are around 90.

OP posts:
TheFerretsSleeping · 05/01/2021 22:53

And hes been covid tested they said it'll take about 2 days for that to come back

I am so sorry @TheFerretsSleeping . I will keep all my digits crossed . At least he is being well looked after and is in the right place, though I am aware of how trite that sounds (I'm sorry).

StartingOver2020 · 05/01/2021 23:06

Best wishes to you and your Dad The FerretsSleeping

Best wishes. He's in the best place, and they will sort him out. Stay strong. Flowers

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/01/2021 05:07

There was a series of threads last year started before the first lockdown named “My lungs are on fire”. I was on it and loads of other posters. No one could get tested at the time. Someone from another country did and it was negative. I can’t answer if it is Coronavirus but a lot of people reported this symptom. I hope your dad will be ok.

LittleWhiteFeather · 06/01/2021 05:48

How's your dad getting on? Hope all is well.

TheFerretsSleeping · 06/01/2021 10:09

That sounds positive Smile

viques · 06/01/2021 14:12

Excellent news about the oxygen. I hope he is comfortable. Thanks for the updates Ferret I hope you don’t mind a handful of Internet random being over invested in your dads well-being! Take care.

Congrats to the GP who made the right call.

TheFerretsSleeping · 06/01/2021 16:37

Hes been for a lung scan where they put dye in your blood. He's got to wait till Monday to get a heart scan either here or travel 112miles away so don't know how thats going to work out. Hes been told to bedrest. Thank you for asking x
