I don't think it's helpful how irate people get about the UK government's failings. Yes there are plenty but this is a whole new situation and there are plenty of other countries making mistakes.
Before you ask - I'm not from the UK, but that means I have insight what happens elsewhere,
So to start -
The Eu has been slow in vaccine acquisition

In Austria, vaccinations could not start yet in some areas as not enogh needles (!) had been ordered

Countries with the most severe lockdown did not necessarily solve the Problem (Spain)

Countries who had supposedly excellent track and trace also had a second wave (Germany)

Anyone got other examples?

Healthcare workers are getting vaccinated in UK.

In Scotland I only know HCPs so far among people I know. And a quick glance at the official tracker shows ( I think. Please anyone correct me if I've got it wrong.) most going to HCP so far.

@hungrywalrus if you think there hasn't been discussion around masks in Germany you haven't been paying attention

I have been paying attention re the discussions around masks, but I can tell you that compliance where I am in shops and suchlike has been pretty high.

avenueq · 15/01/2021 16:31

Same in my area in the UK...

Things definitely do go wrong in other countries.

I have just had a message from my family in the Netherlands that they are not expecting vaccine until March, and also their Government has collapsed/resigned this afternoon.

Unsure33 · 15/01/2021 16:49

Germany had over a 1000 deaths per day recently

Italy are really struggling again despite having a reportedly first class health service

Sweden admitted their strategy was wrong

Russia lied about deaths . It was not 50000 it was 186000 ( which is scary considering their population density)

Belgium still have the highest deaths rate per 100000 of population .

America I heard have 4% of world population but at one stage had 25% of deaths?

The table of daily cases in councils in England on the www.covidmessenger.com homepage is updated.

And we have lots of green today!

200 councils have falling cases week-over-week
114 councils have rising cases week-over-week

So restrictions are starting to work.....

Is that why all travel corridors have now been closed and the R rate is the same as last week? Because things are going so well?

@Unsure33. Italy's schools are reopening on Monday.

That’s looking good littleowl. So pleased to see so much green in there. It was almost completely red last week ShockYour website is amazing and the work you do to update it every day is quite unbelievable SmileFlowers

FFS, surely they can see what other states are doing and resolve that quickly. That is good new daftness @avenueq.

feelingverylazytoday · 15/01/2021 22:17

This is rather worrying. www.bmj.com/content/372/bmj.n149
Hopefully it's not a problem with the vaccine.
@cherryblosm it is not possible to compare death rates and make a direct correlation to the government. That is a very shallow way of looking at the data. So many things are different.

Population size
Population density
Global hub city eg London
The flu outbreak the previous year
How deaths have been counted eg with or from Covid
Whether care home deaths have been counted
Etc etc

It is a very shallow thing to take one number and lash out.
This.

According to the WHO only deaths in hospitals have to be counted so many countries aren't counting deaths at home or in care homes.

As far as I'm aware, it's because there are now a number of variants gaining ground in different countries and we don't want to import any more, as we already have a big enough problem with the one which originated in Kent.

IrmaFayLear · 16/01/2021 14:16

France is also going a bit bananas, apparently, with no “home grown” vaccine and very low vaccination levels.

PrincessNutNuts · 18/01/2021 18:13

The U.K. currently has the worst per capita death rate.

Sweden is the fifth worst.

Downton57 · 18/01/2021 18:24

@FloraFocus the SG started with older residents in care homes (and have now vaccinated 80%), their carers, frontline health and care workers, and are now moving on to those over the age of 80. My parents have their appointment for this week.

LetItGoGo · 18/01/2021 19:45

I think the point was that it's not just Germany where health workers have been prioritised.

But slick work bigging up the Scottish Government!

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 18/01/2021 20:06

Germany are apparently going to lock up repeat lockdown rule breakers in old refugee camps.

Much as I dislike Jez's brother and his mob I wouldn't wish that on them.

Though probably my Jewish DNA twitching that it is Germany doing it.

Still not sure it is the most progressive move.

PrincessNutNuts · 26/01/2021 16:23

Britain now has the highest number of COVID19 deaths per million population in the world.

"Well we're not THE worst"

Now we are.

IrmaFayLear · 26/01/2021 16:30

But we haven’t got the worst vaccine programme. If the vaccines are so crap and we are so idiotic for vaccinating anyone, I wonder why Europe has got its knickers in a collective twist about wanting to get its hands on supplies....

No idea.

Will it bring 100,000 British people back to life?

ATieLikeRichardGere · 27/01/2021 10:17

It won’t. But the vaccination programme is going well and hopefully other vaccines will be joining the fray soon. I’m very glad our genome sequencing is good. I’m glad we’ve got a domestic vaccine supply and we are actively working to increase capacity. Very sadly, this is going to be a long game because covid isn’t going away.

I’m sad to see in particular what is happening in Portugal now where things have really taken a turn for the worse. I suppose what’s scary in all this is how quickly fortunes can change, whether there is a new variant, or a superspreader event or slow political decision making. It can all change in an instant.

Yes, we are in the top 10, no doubt about it. But we do an excellent job of reporting Covid deaths. Other countries..... not so much.....
