As far as I can see , with the exception of a few areas in Tier 3 and schools closing , nothing has really changed. Except if you work in non key worker roles your life has just become exponentially more complicated?

If - for example you work in a fashion warehouse. Travel by public transport and have a couple of children at primary .. exactly HOW are you going to 'Stay home, Protect the NHS & Save Lives ' ?

Because - as far as I heard, yet again there was no MUST .. only the weasel words of ' should, where possible work from home' .. no order to close businesses. No mention of non essential workers required to be furloughed.. so tomorrow, all those people who can't work from home but haven't got 'key worker status' (so can't access schools) do WHAT exactly ?

Oops- read the OP wrong. They clearly meant moving from T3 into lockdown!

Furries · 05/01/2021 00:28

@LoudTree

Absolutely OP- what was needed was a proper lockdown. No one leaves home unless a key worker- no popping out for a bottle of wine, going for a walk or DC going out to play Hmm

Too many people are claiming to be key workers who are patently not. It should be very clear- unless you are a genuine key worker, stay the fuck at home. I can’t believe they’re allowing unlimited ‘exercise’.

I’d use the French system where a signed form is required to leave home- fines issued for those out for too long or too often.

I’d also implement the policy used in Spain were DC under 14 were not allowed out at all for 2 months in order to keep people safe and save lives.

Oh please. I’ve always wanted people to reduce mixing as much as possible, and get annoyed by some blatantly having an “I’m alright Jack attitude”, but this is never (and should never) happen - along with your army suggestions/shopping basket police Etc.

Plus your cherry on top idea of asking your construction worker neighbour to get himself furloughed so that he doesn’t endanger your street!

Work 🤷🏽‍♀️
I work in a contact centre and everyone is expect

How? If your boss is expecting you in at work at 9 am, schools shut, what are you supposed to do. If your not a keyworker, you aren’t entitled to a space at school. But as far as I can see the keyworker list is excessive. Some jobs shouldn’t even make it on to that list.

But those measures didn't work in France or Spain, they've been back in lockdown again 🤷🏻‍♀️
@bugwife9

No- being allowed to leave home is a privilege, not a right. Too many people have abused that privilege and broken the rules- which is why we are now in this situation.

As a result, there need to be harsh consequences and that should include the removal of the right to leave home.
FML - I really think you might be better off looking at job opportunities in a few other places on this planet. I think you might find your neighbours much more compliant with their lifestyle behaviours.

Ladyellow · 05/01/2021 00:34

Going back to the original OP rather than some of the other bizarre stuff that has since been written on this thread! If you have primary aged children and are not keyworkers one parent has to be at home now schools are shut. So surely employers are going to have to furlough staff or allow them to WFH if possible ( rather than employer doesn’t want you too) Maybe stuff like that will be announced over the next few days? The other option is for staff to resign but seems pointless as if you’re furloughed the government will pay you not your employer.

HibernatingTill2030 · 05/01/2021 00:36

LoudTree you terrify me.

GabsAlot · 05/01/2021 00:40

he should have menti0oned furlough and tell emplyers thy must implement it

he should shut all shops that dont sell food not let them stay open with click and collect as a loophole

SmileyClare · 05/01/2021 00:47

Being allowed to leave your home is a privilege

No, being able to stay at home is a privilege. You have that luxury facilitated by hundreds of people out in society; manufacturing, delivering your shopping, packing your goods, sorting your rubbish, keeping your streets safe, fixing your house, maintaining your utilities, building your houses, caring for the needy, providing medical care, manning the shops, emptying your bins, and keeping the half dead economy alive.

I'm really fed up of people turning on each other and pointing fingers.

llovetheshippingforecast · 05/01/2021 00:47

Hmm LoudTree I think your ideas are perhaps a tad draconian .. well perhaps completely OTT (but maybe you are having a laugh with us .. and we have all
Suffered a sense of humour failure .. BUT

I just think that this is not enough. The virus spreads by human contact. So we have to look at the 'pinch points' of contact.

Public transport
Enclosed spaces for long periods with minimal ventilation. (Offices , schools and work places. )
Shopping centres such as Malls.
Shops where people 'linger' for long periods such as garden centres.

As far as I can see, he has closed schools and left all the other places to carry on as usual. Exercising with your own household is nowhere near a 'pinch point'.

The ONLY way this will actually succeed is if people can actually afford to do it. It's no good 'advising' people to stop earning money to buy food and pay their rent/mortgage. If they want them to do it they need to provide a means to make that possible.

OP posts:
SmileyClare · 05/01/2021 01:01

its no good advising people to stop earning money, they need to provide the means.

The only safety net provided to our family when we were both made redundant in March was Universal Credit. After rent and bills we had £40 left a fortnight to feed a family of 4. Both kids are strapping teenagers. It was hell on earth and my weight went down to eight stone. There is no money tree from the government, let's be realistic. If businesses can't operate there are mass redundancies. Furlough cannot retain jobs for this long. There simply won't be jobs to go back to.

SmileyClare · 05/01/2021 01:05

I now have work cleaning. Like fuck am I stopping earning money to go back on the universal credit scrap heap.

saraclara · 05/01/2021 01:13

@LoudTree

It’s about messaging *@KitKatastrophe. If the government made very clear that the only* acceptable reason for leaving home is essential work, they would stay the fuck at home.

Equally, there needs to be proper enforcement. Army and police on the streets issuing large fines to people caught outside their homes. Prison for second offenders.

Jeeze. Well that'll be helpful. Putting them through the courts at great expense, putting court staff at risk, and then good luck finding a prison that can take them all. I'm sure prison officers who are already high risk and dealing with ever more restless inmates due to Covid, will love you for that suggestion.

Exactly. You should be furloughed on full pay. Yes I know it's expensive but if the government wants full compliance it's the only way. Otherwise it's a halfway house and the new strain in 50-70% more transmittable..

The gov need to make a choice. Many many more deaths or PAY for people to afford lockdown. They can't have reduced deaths and people just stop earning because they 'ask' you to.

My teen dd won't be at school but will be at work making coffees and toasties which are apparently essential in our T4 area

QueenPawPaws · 05/01/2021 01:57

@Blueeyesparkle not sure on that one yet. Manager has said anyone with childcare issues to ring in the morning which is maybe 1/3 of staff
So it looks like we will be business as usual but minus 1/3 staff... Confused excellent...
Mix of annual leave and whatever else they can take I guess

People needing takeaway food/drink is classed as essential though i would have thought?

I'm still going to work. I travel in my own car. I have my own office room. I don't go out to the shops to get my lunch. My family are staying at home working and schooling. If I don't go to work my company will go bust with 7 employees laid off. Our job involves visiting sites to do work. Without me in the office and my secretary (again in own office) we can't pass the work to them.

However we are Covid safe

I'm also still going to work. Not sure who will pay my mortgage if I decide to just stay at home 🤷‍♂️

I see the usual batshit posters are on this thread, 😂😂😂

LucilleTheVampireBat · 05/01/2021 06:28

I'm in an office, nothing important, just secretarial work and I'm told to go in tomorrow. Initially they said, take laptops and foot pedals/headphones home with you tonight (Monday) but we then got a group message to say actually no you're expected in.

LucilleTheVampireBat · 05/01/2021 06:29

I should add that I'm fine with it, I dont feel "unsafe" but I know a colleague does and I also know that morally I should be at home, but they pay my wages and if they say I'm in then I'm in!

Eng123 · 05/01/2021 06:37

I'm annoyed that schools are closed. I suspect that the rates have a log to do with pre christmas mixing and shopping as well as a new strain. I guess it's the virus that is the focus of my anger but a lot of non essential businesses were open evening tier 4 and I assume will remain open now. This is annoying - if closing KFC has only a small impact on schools closure then it should still be done.
