Teachers...are kids actually expected to properly remote learn this time?

Genuine question... Is this going to be different to the last lockdown in terms of remote learning?

I know things were different at different schools but last time it very much felt like if they do the work they do it, if they don't they don't 🤷 and to be quite honest, a lot of the time ours didn't do any school work except a few online maths /English games for an hour or so.

Will this time be different in that will they be expected to actually complete proper work, will they be marked as absent if they don't etc...?

This is NOT intended to be in any way teacher bashing. I am genuinely asking whether this time you think it will be different (as I understand the curriculum was suspended last time?).

I have seen posts about children being expected to be on zoom for registration at 10am and so on and just wondering if you think this is going to be much more official this time?

mine started home learning today

state secondary school

4-5 "teams" lessons plus additional work all day

register at start of each teams

schools ave had all year id be furious if some attempt at proper learning wasnt taking place now

WallopDollop · 04/01/2021 20:57

Ours are primary if that makes any difference (9 & 11).

There's a massive expectation that teachers have equipment to provide adequate remote learning.

I and many other teachers are in the fortunate position to own a laptop and not have school aged kids reliant on it. However, many teachers aren't in this situation. So unless they work in school they must have their own technology.

Just out of curiosity, those of you not in education - i.e civil service or government jobs are you provided with technology?

BogRollBOGOF · 04/01/2021 21:03

I hope it's better than this useless shite from last time.

School has got plans for Teams... Not sure how I put the children in front of it? If I gaffer tape them down to stop them running away, do you think that's OK or will it count as a safeguarding concern? Actually, that would get them in as vulnerable...

I have not got the energy for this. I'm as empty as my 2020 diary.

This is what I'm really really struggling with. I have a 6 yo who's supposed to be at morning registration via zoom in uniform for lessons. I work from home on said frigging laptop?! Just what am I supposed to do?

Does anyone know? Sad

Ijustreallywantacat · 04/01/2021 21:09

'Useless site?' Someone has worked hard on that. Its got enough intstruction for open ended and worthwhile work.
Teams isn't good enough either? What exactly do you expect the school to do?!

Glad to see our efforts aren't wasted.

Ijustreallywantacat · 04/01/2021 21:10

'Useless shite'

SantaAssociationRepresentitve · 04/01/2021 21:13

You have to ask your school what it is doing.

I know what I am doing at my school. Fully online from morning reg, online lessons, visual on students doing stuff, homework, assessments etc. Plus online extra-curricular. Same as last time. It was set up at the beginning of the last lockdown - we are online dynamos at my school

This is what I'm wondering. Is this type of thing going to be the norm across schools do you think?

I really really don't want this to turn into a bashing thread. This was not the intention. Last time seemed different and it was due to a range of things.

I'm just trying to work out realistically what I should expect in terms of me needing to supervise home learning whilst WFH (As last time to be perfectly honest, they spent more time in front of the TV/games console so we could get on with work 😖).

Similar here in that I've got 3 dc and 1 device for them to use all expected to be logged on at the same time 🤷‍♀️
justanotherneighinparadise · 04/01/2021 21:16

I’ve been told the expectation is that you are set up for remote learning. In that your child has a clear workspace and accessibility to work whether that be via computer or printable worksheets. The environment should be set up for them to work BUT if they refuse to work you are not expected to make them.

Pastanred · 04/01/2021 21:16

last time our school did mainly class charts and powerpoing with voice recordings and links to video tutorials on you tube- ok

now kits all teams in addition to above

theyve had enough time really to set stuff up

im teacher - 6th form and i use my home personal computer who i expect work wold give me one if i asked

grafittiartist · 04/01/2021 21:16

I am expecting all mine online tomorrow.
However- I understand that it's not that straight forward, and work will be online to access.
(Not sure what's shite about the tasks in the picture- they seem suitable for work at home?)

gottakeeponmovin · 04/01/2021 21:17

Last time was dire I seriously hope it's better this time

And if they weren't online working through the day would you mark them as officially absent?

I think expecting DC to be in uniform is a bit much Hmm.

Ours is doing video registration at 9.00am so the DC can be seen (assuming CP), then work being downloaded and to be marked as ‘handed in’ when finished although it won’t be looked at or marked. Class novel on video (so and can all be seen again) after lunch, then a daily ‘project’.

Parents will be expected to make sure work is correct by checking marking sheets and report back to teacher if DC struggling.

Our class is all set up as they had a trial run when DS got Covid and class had to isolate.

LST · 04/01/2021 21:19

Well mine can't. Its impossible. I have a 6 and 9 year old who havent got anything other than a tiny kindle and I need to work full time.

Have you got a smart phone he can use, that’s what we did.
Frlrlrubert · 04/01/2021 21:21

Last time the government (not schools) suspended the curriculum. This time it is expected to continue.

I'm secondary, and we're doing 50% of lessons on teams and some independent tasks for the rest.

We can't please everyone, because some would rather no live lessons (more children than devices usually), and some want them 100% of the time.

newyeary · 04/01/2021 21:22

We're having the same provision as last lockdown. A few worksheets.

DancingQueen2018 · 04/01/2021 21:23

Ours seems much better this time around (primary). 3 tasks with video explanations. Teachers are available in email for questions, and work is being emailed in and not marked exactly, but feedback given.

walksen · 04/01/2021 21:23

Waiting for further guidance from school for this lockdown but expecting to use teams. Last time we could send messages to chase work but not make calls etc ( and I would have refused to use my own phone to do so by). It would have been better to have all parent emails at least.

Not sure if we will be allowed to work from school premises which I would prefer but if not most staff will likely use their own it equipment but I will still not be using my personal phone to make calls.

ichundich · 04/01/2021 21:23

@CoronaIsShit Why will the work not be looked at or marked? Are you planning to provide recorded lessons?

grafittiartist · 04/01/2021 21:25

Wallopdollop-
They would be contacted by pastoral to check that they are ok if not "turning up".
But like I said- we understand that all children won't be able to access live lessons at the same time- so work is there to do independently. This can just be sent in/ photographed and emailed.
