I missed the first part!

I know schools have closed until Feb half term.

Nursery open

Can you meet anyone for walks?

Takeaways open?

Borders closed? (Probably not)

Could someone sum it up for me?

@covetingthepreciousthings. Thank you. I live abroad and feel so helpless.

Soontobe60 · 04/01/2021 21:39

@LazyFace

I've booked a flight to visit my grandma in a different country... I don't think she'll make it till the summer. I'm so gutted and torn ....
Aww, that’s so sad for you. I hope you manage to see her x
daisychain01 · 04/01/2021 21:45

@FarTooSkinny

Can a cleaner still come to your house?
Yes they can.

Cleaning involving someone coming to your house is listed as a permitted product or service.

Vitaminsss · 04/01/2021 21:47

When does the new lockdown start? Immediately or?

CircusMistress · 04/01/2021 21:51

It it not basically unilaterateral tier 4 rules across the country + school closure?
That's how I'm reading it. With an emphasis that we are expected to abide.

midgebabe · 04/01/2021 21:54

Starts now morally but legal Wednesday

midgebabe · 04/01/2021 21:55

Schools closed plus only outside once a day for exercise

The full 22 page report now online

Mousehole10 · 04/01/2021 22:02

@THATbasicSNOWFLAKE

I'm confused

Is it just ECV not going to work or CV too?

Just ECV. CV can still go into work if they can’t work from home, same as everyone else.
MiddlesexGirl · 04/01/2021 22:02

There's more than just school closures.
Can't meet 121 outside unless exercising.
Outdoor sports facilities to close (so it's OK to run with someone but not to play golf or tennis)
No travelling outside your local area except for essential reasons
And more small details.

amicissimma · 04/01/2021 22:04

Why are people panic buying? The supermarkets are all allowed to stay open. No restrictions on lorries moving stuff about.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 04/01/2021 22:05

@Redbrickwall

Can construction still work? My husband works totally alone in construction
Yes
Dee1975 · 04/01/2021 22:06

Basically don’t go anywhere. Stay at home. Go out once a day for exercise or else you will get fined ...

RichardMarxisinnocent · 04/01/2021 22:06

@Blueeyesparkle

I’m in Scotland and our local tesco had a queue nearly all around the car park today. People panic buying as there were no eggs or toilet rolls left at 3pm when I popped down after work to get cat food
I don't understand why people would do this? Supermarkets aren't closing, or stopping selling eggs and toilet roll after midnight tonight, so why are people panic buying? Wtf are they panicking about?
Kronprinz · 04/01/2021 22:18

Nice summary here: www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/04/lockdown-no-3-what-are-the-new-restrictions
Opticians and dentists open.
Not sure how garden centres became essential this time...
Unis asked not to let students return, and only teach online for most subjects. However I imagine lots of students in private accomm will return regardless. At sons uni they say if you don't have adequate study set-up you can return so that's another loophole. A lot seem to want to go back, have had enough of family, so not very enforceable.

PattyPan · 04/01/2021 22:21

I think the reason garden centres can stay open is because gardening is a popular form of exercise/hobby for older people so it's something that can keep them occupied and in a certain degree of fitness. They're obviously also outside so lower risk than normal shops. Also, many people grow their own food to varying degrees so might lead to lower risk than them going into supermarkets?

The reason takeaways are remaining open is presumably to prevent the hospitality industry from immediately going under.

Em777 · 04/01/2021 22:23

Exactly the same as tier 4 except schools are closed and shielding is reinstated.

Vitaminsss · 04/01/2021 22:23

I need to return something to a non-essential retailer. Not sure whether to do it tomorrow or wait until after lockdown? Did retailers (Zara) extend their return policy for the previous lockdowns?

sallyisstarstruck · 04/01/2021 22:32

@whatwedontknow

So he says it’s 40% worse than March, then doesn’t close diy stores, garden centres, takeaways, construction sites, is that right? What the very fuck?
DIY stores have always been classed as essential. It's supposed to be so you can keep your home safe and secure. Quite how a tin of paint does that I don't know. Hmm
PattyPan · 04/01/2021 22:38

@Vitaminsss I don't know about Zara but pretty much everywhere I ordered from during lockdown 1 extended their returns period. I have stuff to return to John Lewis so also hoping it will be the case!

DiscordandRhyme · 04/01/2021 22:38

@Jjjjjj1981 the specialist school my husband works at is staying open - not sure about all though.

Bambam2019 · 04/01/2021 22:48

No but it is if you’re taking them to nursery and then retreating back home because it’s “not safe” to be out otherwise...!

Jjjjjj1981 · 04/01/2021 22:51

Oh thank you @DiscordandRhyme, that’s really helpful to know.

Bonkerz · 04/01/2021 23:01

@Monkeytapper

Is my DD allowed to go to childminder still? I work part time as a receptionist, engineering so not closing. OH works away mon-fri so can’t look after her.
Even childminders don't know if we can open! Guidance says remain open and then to vulnerable and key workers. We need clarification so many have closed tomorrow to get it.
GabsAlot · 04/01/2021 23:24

i doubt you can go to a clothes shop to return something they'll be closed or click and collect only
