@vickyp0llard

That post makes me feel sick, how could you accept more than half a million people dying?

How can you accept loads of children and young adults having years of their life down the toilet, double-digit unemployment, 6 million people on antidepressants, suicide, lack of socialisation, a mountain of debt for generations and shit quality of life for years? It's not just about lives saved, it's also about actually enjoying that life too.

Seriously? You would rather 600 000 people suffer and die? That's your preference?
SophieB100 · 04/01/2021 20:39

Johnson made it very clear that only if everything goes to plan - with the variant and how it's controlled - and crucially the roll out of the vaccine and getting the vaccine in the arms of the top 4 groups - only then, can we hope to reduce measures by half term.
So, that's the best scenario - 15th Feb at the earliest.

ToxicPickl · 04/01/2021 20:39

Hiya sorry new here, does anyone know what the advice is fro pregnant women regarding work? I'm an essential worker (support work/care) and I travel on public transport (bus) I've tried looking for info online but I'm running in circles haha

HibernatingTill2030 · 04/01/2021 20:39

@GhostPepperTears

Don't do this, people. Don't take all your fear and anger and grief and worry and frustration and target it at each other on here.

It won't help. It won't make anything better.

Different people have different worries, but everyone is just doing what they can to drag themselves through this shit storm.

They do. But nobody else is saying they would "accept" an additional 600,000 deaths. That's awful.

It's a shitty situation and we have to do our best with limited options, but to say someone accepts 600,000 deaths is disgusting.

Everything you listed can be overcome, somehow. If you are dead, you are dead forever.

thecatfromjapan · 04/01/2021 20:41

I know, BoohBahBoo.
I've waved a neighbour's coffin goodbye and I have a dear friend seriously ill with Covid right now.

I'm worried about my parents.

But I figure it's some weird attention-seeking/defence mechanism.

In real life, everyone I know is like me: worried and determined to look out for others.

So that's good.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 04/01/2021 20:41

I'm in the vulnerable group. And I did the vaccine calculation (Omni)

My MIL is over 80 and hers came up as end of March.

Yes, it does seem as though it's a bit of an optimistic schedule, 6 weeks isn't a huge amount of time for what is planned.
vickyp0llard · 04/01/2021 20:41

Seriously? You would rather 600 000 people suffer and die? That's your preference?

I think if these lockdowns carry on the real death toll (from economic poverty) will be a lot more than that over the next 10 years, with reduced money for NHS and MH issues/unemployment/inflation galore, plus reduced birth rates, so short-term pain by letting the virus rip through may be the least shit option for actually saving lives in the long run.

stovetopespresso · 04/01/2021 20:42

@vickyp0llard its also due to hospitals not being overwhelmed and therefore unable to treat all the other illnesses and injuries and conditions we ALL can suffer

HibernatingTill2030 · 04/01/2021 20:42

And I don't mean to dismiss the very real concerns you listed.
But I would rather triple digit unemployment and sky high national debt, shit as it will be for generations, than 600,000 more deaths. Deaths which will mostly be beloved grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and critical workers keeping the country going.

CovidCarol · 04/01/2021 20:42

I won't tell you what she said the other day about her own kids then 😬

All of those things on the list are proven to lead to excess deaths. They actively cause deaths too.

So you'd be happy to die of it then?
stovetopespresso · 04/01/2021 20:43

@vickyp0llard no because hospitals won't be able to treat others

vickyp0llard · 04/01/2021 20:43

So you'd be happy to die of it then?

Yep, happy to take my chances. I've had a nice life, gotta die of something.

Siw2020 · 04/01/2021 20:44

@xenia - would you feel the same if you were in the 600,000? what about your mum/dad/sister/brother/children/friends/everyone you know?

I work in a hospital and know of a colleague whos lost all 3 relatives within the span of a week. to covid.

I am young (20s) and have no health issues - i would probably survive, I come into contact with covid positive patients daily. I still would not wish for what you just did, and for what its worth, would not want it for you either.

vickyp0llard · 04/01/2021 20:45

My mum lived through an economic collapse for 10 years, said she'd rather die of covid tomorrow than have her kids live through the same. As someone said on here, poverty isn't just eating value beans and putting heating on a bit less, it leads to death.

BillMasen · 04/01/2021 20:45

How about you choose someone in your family. Who is disposable?
thecatfromjapan · 04/01/2021 20:45

Yes.

I really do think that, in real life, we do care.

People come to MN for all sorts of reasons.

So, in the spirit of raising things up -

Take care, everyone. Look after yourselves. Don't be afraid of asking those around you for help if you need it. There's a lot of love and care in this world - and the economy of love is magical: the more you give, the more you have.

We'll get through this - but we need to be kind to ourselves and others if we want to get through it stronger.

Well, we all get what we deserve. Best of luck. Have you got kids? Are you happy for them to die too? Parents? Happy to take your chances with them? If so, no heart. If not, no argument.
HeronLanyon · 04/01/2021 20:46

stove no ! No mention of teachers nor indeed thanks to health care etc. I don’t think he could thank the one without the other and he must have been anxious to avoid anything which might look as though teachers and unions were right weeks ago.
No mention of universities!

End March taking into account the two further thins he said - after mid feb it takes two weeks to take effect (so end feb) and then some time to see the effect on nhs. So I reckon end March. If things go as planned. Ffs.
Support all.

borntobequiet · 04/01/2021 20:46

It’s quite something when some posters on Mumsnet make the current Government look like compassionate, indeed saintly figures in their care and concern for the general public.

Parker231 · 04/01/2021 20:46

The lockdown isn’t just to try and prevent more deaths but to stop more people getting ill enough to need hospital care.
If the hospitals remain full of Covid patients, general NHS care can’t resume. If the wards are all full of Covid patients (and are in some hospitals) where are you going to go if you need emergency surgery for a burst appendix, badly broken leg, road traffic accident etc.
