To wonder what is happening in Spain with Covid

I have family links to Spain and the huge, densely populated region where my contacts are living have very, very few restrictions! Bars and restaurants are open (reduced numbers), allowed people in your home etc. Yes there's is a curfew (at 11pm) but life is pretty normal. They have had far less restrictions than us for months. Why on earth are our cases running rampant despite loads of restrictions and their lives are pretty normal and no reports of hospitals struggling (they were struggling a lot in March so it's not that they have huge capacity compared to us) Feel envious(!) and struggle to understand what's happening.

OP posts:

There numbers were high again up until a few weeks ago they maybe they're over this wave.

tobee · 03/01/2021 23:34

Interesting with regard to the new variant. Especially as fingers are pointed at U.K. as the source. Are they going to be dealing with the new strain? Has the flight ban etc worked?

FuckOffBorisYouTwat · 03/01/2021 23:36

They locked down much much harder than we did in March.

tobee · 03/01/2021 23:38

@FuckOffBorisYouTwat

They locked down much much harder than we did in March.
But what's that got to do with it?
TheSilentStars · 03/01/2021 23:39

Because there are lots of vague UK restrictions that people (if you read MN) don't seem to take much notice of. In Spain, like other countries which did a hard lockdown, there was a list of absolutes and there were no exceptions.

tobee · 03/01/2021 23:40

Especially as they had very high numbers last year. And locking down in March doesn't stop people getting it. Locking down just slows transmission

turnitonagain · 03/01/2021 23:42

Ask your family about mask wearing in Spain especially inside of school classrooms.

tobee · 03/01/2021 23:42

But Spain had high numbers, had plenty of tourists in summer and only just recently reacted to U.K. having new variant.

tobee · 03/01/2021 23:42

@turnitonagain

That sounds more like a good response

My friend lives in Marbella and she was in a bar (seating area outside today). I don't believe it has anything to do with their hard lockdown, up until quite recently we were in a similar position to them with numbers and they even had nightclubs and tourists again over the summer. I think we've been really bloody unlucky with this mutant strain.

tobee · 03/01/2021 23:44

Let's hope the mutant strain doesn't really take off in Europe now. Let's hope their vaccines come to the fore

veeeeh · 03/01/2021 23:46

Sorry now, but who gives a F about British immigrants.

The indigenous population are suffering too. WTF.

Sweettea1 · 03/01/2021 23:47

Maybe because their government followed the rules they made so everyone else did. unlike our useless government who seen it as do as we say not as we do so every1 just done what they wanted 🤔 lock down and tiers will mot work here when we have a government (the leaders) doing as they please.

Saylethewayles · 03/01/2021 23:49

The indigenous population are suffering too. WTF.

Eh?!

Saylethewayles · 03/01/2021 23:50

BTW I'm half Spanish and I can categorically tell you that there was plenty of rule breaking.

Why half of MN seems to believe that all of Europe is more compliant than the UK I don't know, but it isn't true.

tobee · 03/01/2021 23:51

Yeah op, how dare you care about your family?

This!

The U.K. government is almost entirely shit but making sweeping comments about how crap we all are compared to everyone else undermines that argument when it's demonstrably not true.

Saylethewayles · 03/01/2021 23:54

I just don't get it Confused

thistooshallpas5 · 03/01/2021 23:54

We have to wear a mask all the time (other than when eating and drinking). By all the time I mean it even when walking the dog or walking from your car to your house.
We have had curfews and movement restrictions imposed since the full lockdown ended.
People are far more compliant here they don't challenge the rules as much as in the UK and most people are pretty frightened of the police.
Fines for breaking rules are high up to €60,000.
It's easy to think the grass is greener and that other countries have dealt with things better but it's not always necessarily true.
I would say testing here is the biggest reason for smaller numbers. In my area (I can't speak for others) we don't have home testing kits sent out or drive through tests. I would assume that more testing also equals more cases.
The Spanish government simply can not afford to lockdown any further. During the last lockdown they implemented certain grants and furlough schemes etc but on the whole people are still waiting for this money to be paid to them and they have said it can take up to two years.

arethereanyleftatall · 03/01/2021 23:56

Up until literally today, Spain have had a worse death rate than us the whole way through.

hansgrueber · 03/01/2021 23:57

Am I allowed make such a statement about immigrants here? Thought not. Maybe we too should be concerned only about the 'indigenous population', imagine the outcry. Again M N hypocrisy at its best.

Saylethewayles · 03/01/2021 23:57

Tbh the whole of Europe has pretty much cocked up its covid response, although I do think our government wins the prize for most incompetent.

Saylethewayles · 03/01/2021 23:57

I'm genuinely not getting how immigrants come into any of this?!

Dugee · 04/01/2021 00:02

Let's just change that and see if you still find it to be an acceptable comment:
