Why is the whole country in lockdown?

Millions of children are having their education interrupted severely, suffering mental health problems and people are losing their businesses and livelihoods for a disease unlikely to affect them.

Why can it not be that instead, vulnerable people shield (which most are doing anyway) instead of everyone?

People I’m sure will come with the counter argument to say it’s not fair leaving people on their own etc. They could still have a support bubble and it would mean that the whole country isn’t suffering severely as a result.

Is it not logical to have fewer people be locked down as opposed to everyone? Surely that’s just basic logic. I would rather no one suffer from this horrible disease but at the moment it feels like it's 'everyone suffer' because that's the 'fair' way to do it.

Could we not have used the money from furlough and all the other grants to fund the vulnerable whilst shielding.

I say this because 388 people have died aged under 60 with no underlying health conditions. If we go by 34% mortality rate of people admitted to ICU then we are talking about 1141 people under 60 with no underlying health issues needing ICU treatment Since March.

Not all hospitals are full and busting. Media do exaggerate things you know.

lavenderlou · 03/01/2021 20:17

Probably an attempt to contain the new variant which is incredibly contagious. Infection rate at 1200+ here for 2 weeks. God help anyone who needs any sort of hospital treatment round here.

nevereverplease · 03/01/2021 20:17

The long term damage is running rife anyway. Over 50k tests positive A DAY!!

To me it sounds like many posters feel the current system is working just fine then?

So I’m 42 and classes as vulnerable. Does that mean my dh and kids aren’t allowed out either? I think people don’t realise how many people have low immune systems due to previous cancer treatments, medication not even thinking about the elderly. Should all these people not leave the house so you can go on as normal? Until when?

midgebabe · 03/01/2021 20:19

Things could actually be worse you know?

Excitablemuch · 03/01/2021 20:19

It’s not about how many have died or will die in terms of the population. It’s about how many will require hospital treatment. Subsequently survive but overrun the hospitals.

PurpleDaisies · 03/01/2021 20:19

Doctors are lying about how bad it is? I’m an ex medic. My friends still there aren’t making it up.

Obviously there are variations across the country. I wouldn’t want to live where the local icu is at 137% bed capacity and nurses are working at patient ratios of 1:4 instead of 1:1. It’s a really, really bad situation that’s going to get worse before it gets better.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 03/01/2021 20:19

Did I miss an announcement? I didn't know we were all in lockdown Confused

nevereverplease · 03/01/2021 20:19

@Icantstopeatinglol but surely you're already not leaving the house? Like all of us are currently doing??

@nevereverplease

Yes but those people would have gone down as having no underlying health issues if they were not aware they had the surely?
If you have eczema, as an example, you go down as having an underlying condition.

I'm surprised there's 300 people in the UK who don't have some fucking underlying condition.

midgebabe · 03/01/2021 20:20

If you are not leaving the house, why not?

Hopefullynamechanged935 · 03/01/2021 20:21

The hospitalisation rate for the over fifties with no conditions is still massive. Boris Johnson a totally typical example. If we let everyone except the elderly and vulnerable get it there would still be a million in hospital with capacity of not even ten per cent of that. So the 900k who can't get the oxygen would die, along with everyone else in need of other treatment for other illnesses. What do you think to that OP?

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 03/01/2021 20:21

Because vulnerable people don't exist in a vacuum.

I say this because 388 people have died aged under 60 with no underlying health conditions.

Screw the ones who did have an 'underlying health condition'. Imagine being so stupid as to be diabetic, or have had blood cancer or have to be on steroids. What dickheads for choosing those things, didn't they even THINK of covid? Duur.

nevereverplease · 03/01/2021 20:22

@User158340 the list is here, eczema is not listed;

I'm really beginning to despair with people's lack of ability to think laterally. Can you really not expand your mind just a teensy bit?

I'm confused - how would those with underlying health not have right to life by shielding?? They are shielding anyway so nothing would change

I'm on multiple immunosupressents but have never been told to shield so I still go to work; where the grimy public touch their masks, pull their masks down, lick their fingers, put their heads around screens...

Icantstopeatinglol · 03/01/2021 20:25

nevereverplease I’m going out for exercise only but does that mean my kids and dh shouldn’t attend school or work?

CustardCreamm · 03/01/2021 20:26

I agree with you OP!

AntiHop · 03/01/2021 20:26

I say this because 388 people have died aged under 60 with no underlying health conditions

Do you know how fucking offensive this @nevereverplease

Over 80,000 people in the uk have died from coronavirus. Have you stopped to think what an underlying condition is? I'm 43 and I've had asthma all my life. I'm not going to die from asthma, and it is not going to shorten my life. But if I died, because of my "underlying condition" my death wouldn't matter to you? Loads of adults have underlying conditions that they live with perfect fine.

Lovelydovey · 03/01/2021 20:26

Because it is impossible for vulnerable people to completely shield themselves, and we need to minimise spread in the community to protect them. My DF is in critical care and we believe he caught this at a hospital appointment as he and my DM hadn’t seen anyone else Inside since late October.

nevereverplease · 03/01/2021 20:27

@AntiHop how the hell is it offensive?? FFS get a GRIP

Honestly, mumsnet is the strangest place - how have you managed to completely twist my words and interpret my post as saying I don't care about vulnerable people.

You have issues.

Poorlykitten · 03/01/2021 20:28

Our area rates are shocking snd we are very rural but seems due to new strain. The local hospital is in emergency measures as can’t take anymore, if more folk get ill now when schools return (as there will be a surge) where will they go? Just suffer or die at home?

TillysMum02 · 03/01/2021 20:28

@nevereverplease look back at your own posts.....you were singing a different tune when your DH wanted to visit his family!!!
