Close the airports to holiday makers! One of my colleagues just returned from the Caribbean last Thursday. Seems crazy they can do that but I can't meet up with my friend and her kids to allow my daughter to have social interaction in a park outside. Nuts that we're making sacrifices but others can go off for a jolly abroad.

inquietant · 03/01/2021 16:19

@cyclingmad do you think the economy is thriving currently? We are absolutely in the shit (technical term) at the moment.

Tenyearsgone · 03/01/2021 16:22

@cyclingmad

Yes let's destroy what little jobs are left and people lose their homes and livelihood.

Unbelievable.

Those calling for lockdown hope your happy when you lose you jobs your house your car and everything else you possess.

I suspect the ones screeching for full lockdowns and school closures have nice secure jobs and can work from home or are SAHM.
Heartlantern2 · 03/01/2021 16:23

National lockdown- yes, to further crush people’s businesses, mortgage payments and income- it’s alright for him, it’s us that will struggle to pay the bills!

Wish they would piss off!

inquietant · 03/01/2021 16:26

Do people really think the economy will boom in the next few weeks whilst we have such high cases? Are people really expecting floods of tourists, day trippers? What money do they imagine will be spent next week anyway?

cyclingmad · 03/01/2021 16:27

@inquietant its not cos we're locking things down, yet when things eases up post first lockdown the economy was getting better.

Today we have 454 deatsh we not even at numbers back in March.

What the economy won't do is thrive in more lockdowns.

Its even been said that lockdowns aren't the answer either.

The virus is more infectious but not as deadly they tell us so exactly why do we need another full lockdown

Lockdowns just pushing more and more people into poverty and its not like there will be some massive bounce back to recover quickly from either.

Be careful what you ask for cos one day it will be you at the receiving end.

CKBJ · 03/01/2021 16:28

@Bluntness100 I hope the death rate isn’t scaled up in the coming days due to Christmas delays and other nations not consistently reporting each day over the festive period.

Starmer is too quiet and doesn’t appear decisive enough. Just stating the obvious. The figures suggest COVID has been out of control for a while and he decides to come out today to say national lockdown in 24hrs. And a day before primary schools are due to open he says too disruptive to blanket close tomorrow... really? All working parents have worked that one out. Where has he and his party been in the last few days?

Are you likely to lose your job? Will you have to find alternative childcare if the schools close? So you can go and work in a supermarket or care home?

No I didn't think so.

Kazzyhoward · 03/01/2021 16:30

@Whatever9999

I mean, great swathes of the country are already in lockdown, but go ahead.

They may call it tier 4, but it's lockdown really

Compared to March>May, tier 4 is nowhere near the same kind of lockdown. Back then, the streets were quiet, people really were staying at home, lots more shops/businesses were closed, schools were closed, building sites were closed, parks etc were closed. I remember there was barely any traffic on the roads. Tier 4 is nothing like that. People seem to have very short memories.
EssentialHummus · 03/01/2021 16:30

So we can expect Boris to talk shit to him on Wednesday followed by him promptly locking down on Friday then? What a shower of shite.

This gets my vote. I reckon it’ll be called Tier 4+.

Deaths are always low every single weekend. Give it to Tuesday to see what the real figures are. Never base number of deaths on weekend figures.

@SpnBaby1967

Does anybody actually care what that snake of a man thinks? All he cares about is popularity polls.
He’s doing what he’s supposed to do as Leader of the Opposition 😂😂
CKBJ · 03/01/2021 16:33

@Tenyearsgone school should be open for those children whose parent(s) work in a supermarket or care home just like back in March-July

inquietant · 03/01/2021 16:33

@cyclingmad

Just for info - my DH's business is catering so I won't be lectured on the financial impact! We would love the situation to be better.

It appears you don't understand how serious the current situation is. The figures are extremely bad, we have more people in hospital than at the first peak and other health treatments - including cancer operations - are now needing to be cancelled. It isn't just covid deaths.

Kazzyhoward · 03/01/2021 16:33

If they do another lockdown, then they really need to sort out the self employed support so that the 3 million excluded finally get some support in the hope that fewer people will lose their savings, their businesses and their homes. The crazy support system has given loads of money to people who don't need so much and very little, if any, to the 3 million excluded.

Bluntness100 · 03/01/2021 16:34

I think a Christmas lag would have been seen by now. Everyone is back at work.

In addition, as much as they are low on weekends, we can do weekend to weekend comparisons. And on the spring peak they were much much higher than this. For less cases.

You mean elections ??? Those polls ??? 👍🤣
Purplethrow · 03/01/2021 16:35

We’re in tier 4and it’s nothing like a lockdown, loads of cars on the roads , dd had to go to the bank after Christmas and said the high street was packed.

inquietant · 03/01/2021 16:36

@Tenyearsgone see above about our financial situation. Don't be so rude as to make assumptions about me.

I'm not assuming anything about you.

ihatefacemasks · 03/01/2021 16:37

I had started to think Starmer was okayish. I have now changed my mind again.

2boysand1princess · 03/01/2021 16:38

What was the maximum number of deaths in a day of covid?
Approx 1000? I can’t even remember. Think was April time?
We are now getting figures in that region.

Don’t judge the number of death on weekend figures like today, as they are always lower than the true number. Weber had pretty high figures last week unfortunately

GGilbert · 03/01/2021 16:38

Scotland has been in lockdown for over a week.
Numbers high
Talk of further measures this week .
No idea what further measures could be unless it's keeping education closed until after half term in Feb.

I wouldn't have expressed it quite like this, but I completely agree with the sentiment.

Have already lost my job, not much left to lose, I still think we should be in lockdown.
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/01/2021 16:40

And that would be the best way if making sure immediate lockdown won't happen.
