I really thought there was going to be a primaries U-turn today

For once I am astonished that the government has made a decision and stuck to it!

(I mean, it’s the wrong decision, but still.)

@TheFormidableMrsC

I'm in North Herts, all but one of our primaries have announced closure today.
I'm also in North Herts but haven't heard anything since Wednesday when we were told that our primary kids would expected back on Tuesday. Where have you heard that schools will not be opening please?
Kazzyhoward · 03/01/2021 17:15

@user127819

I think there still will be a u-turn, but not until schools have been open a few days and more damage has been done.
Sad, but probably very true. Just like the way they stopped furlough at the end of October and huge numbers of employees were made redundant, only for the idiotic Chancellor to do a last minute U turn on the last Saturday of the month (a non working day) to say furlough would continue after all, meaning those firms who'd spent time and money making staff redundant were expected to spend time and money to put them back on their payrolls so that they could be furloughed again. You really couldn't make it up.
bonbonours · 03/01/2021 17:16

Well practically everyone I know has already told school they won't be bringing kids in. Our school has emailed saying they have received lots of emails saying the same, and confirming they will not be issuing fines. Teacher friends of mine are not happy about being made to go in when it isn't safe, and feel that the government are throwing school staff under a bus making them put themselves at risk, with no PPE, even not being allowed to wear masks.

People who are talking about “hysteria” and blaming unions: Have you looked at what the scientists are saying? (The mainstream majority, not professionally wrong wingnuts like Sunetra Gupta.)

Have a look at what they’re saying on social media.

You’ll soon realise that they are, in unison, imploring the government to shut schools immediately, and saying even that might not be enough now they’ve left it so long. Please do some reading and stop believing the arse-covering spin you’re being fed by no. 10.

UneFoisAuChalet · 03/01/2021 17:20

Those saying lots of people would jump at the chance to teach again 😂😂😂

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 03/01/2021 17:20

It does seem like madness to open schools for any length of time if they're going to shut them again. You lose any advantage gained over the last week or two if children haven't been mixing and have to start again.

Daddyatethemincepies · 03/01/2021 17:24

@ihatefacemasks

People who stopped teaching because they couldn't bear the unionisation and politicisation of the profession? People who stopped teaching because political correctness became more important than anything else?

That is to say: former teachers.

Former teachers aren't going to be flocking back to teaching.
Witchend · 03/01/2021 17:28

Lots of people have lost their jobs/businesses recently, so there'll be plenty of people, many well educated, who'd jump at the chance of a secure job like teaching.

Bless... I guess they can all be trained up within the fortnight.

Lauren1983 · 03/01/2021 17:30

4 primary schools are now not reopening on Monday in my area (tier 4 328 cases per 100k and rising).

DD's school not on list but feeling torn as am a SAHM and can easily keep her home if it keeps others safe.

ThatDamnKrampus · 03/01/2021 17:31

We just had an email to close our primary school (NW, Tier 4, 250/100k) under section 44.

Noellodee · 03/01/2021 17:31

Aaaaaargh - if schools are going to shut (spoiler: they are) do it fucking NOW, before we waste 2 weeks of closure and before all that holiday mingling gets a chance to explode in schools.

Boris Johnson, stop being a fucking idiot!

NerrSnerr · 03/01/2021 17:33

I think it's crazy. Clearly all schools will be closed very soon and opening them and letting the children mix and spread it around before they actually close them is crazy. My daughter will go in regardless into keyworker provision but reckon they'll be self isolating within the week looking at how the numbers are rising in the local area.

Partey · 03/01/2021 17:34

Just had update from DS school. They’re open and confident they can keep everyone safe. Only change is to ask parents to wear masks in yard. Tier 4 North East. The other village primary has closed til Wed to buy some time

Popcornriver · 03/01/2021 17:34

Half those in my area have already announced full or partial closures because of the teachers doing what the unions reccomended. Good on them.

Crazydogmumma · 03/01/2021 17:36

Not sure where these people are- my last advert for teaching staff (Dec ) attracted 1 applicant!

Splendid. There is nothing to stop them training.

SophieB100 · 03/01/2021 17:37

@Noellodee

Now, stop talking sense. When has Boris ever been proactive?
He buggered up the first lockdown (too late) so he'll bugger up this one.
He'll wait until there are no staff in schools, numbers are at an all time high, the NHS is at breaking point. Then he'll rock up, bang his fist, say alas and alack a lot, and do what he should be doing now. Tonight. Locking down.
Twillock. (Him, not you Grin)

bartymao · 03/01/2021 17:40

A dinner lady at ds school is still in hospital after having Covid in early December.

This is what concerns me, if I end up in hospital my children will end up in foster care.

Dreamylemon · 03/01/2021 17:42

Another wasted opportunity.

Had we closed schools, gone for a national lockdown and prioritised the vaccine which we now have we would be in a far better position by March. But no, we are going to send the schools back just in time for Christmas mixing to have maximum effect and close them in a couple of weeks. I despair!!

This is the biggest fuck up of all their fuck ups so far (bar international travel).

The government are taking the unions on head to head. There is a court hearing tomorrow.[/quote]
2020 do you have more information on this?

CakeRattleandRoll · 03/01/2021 17:56

Watching in horror and disbelief from Australia. My city closed all schools (except key worker kids) back in March, when our cases reached 1.5 per 100k population. Yes, 1.5. Per 100k.

So thankful for proper leadership from our State premier.

Indeed. Assuming they already hold a relevant degree then they will be able to access a PGCE course from sept 2021 and will be ready to reach by the end of 2022. Bet they'll be queueing out of the door to apply 😂

Yes. The latest figures how 12-16 yo are 7 times more likely to bring covid in a household.

Blows the schools aren't responsible for community transmission line out the window!
