@SansaSnark don't think you get the option in many jobs
Like i have posted I am surprised its taken the unions this long tbh and I support teachers with numbers as they are
I have a yr 11 ds so school closures are huge as he is a rubbish home learner but worst case gcse can be taken again and I would rather he and others around him are safe
Get what option?

There are very few jobs in the UK where you cannot join a union. The more people who join them, the more power they have.

Teachers unions are only powerful because it is a highly unionised profession.

I know it is tough for Y11, and I am really worried for my Y11s. I think GCSEs need to be cancelled and tbf the NEU have been campaigning on exams, too.

noblegiraffe · 02/01/2021 20:36

It seems to me, anyone who disagrees with you is "wrong".

Well obviously.

But I'm not the only person correcting you on the strike thing, am I? There's a legal process to follow to go out on strike and it hasn't been followed here. It's not a strike.

CoffeeCreamandSugar · 02/01/2021 20:36

I preferred my children’s schooling not to be live. They are too young not to be supervised and responded better when we had set tasks we could do around working.

TheSunIsStillShining · 02/01/2021 20:37

@GetOffYourHighHorse

'You don’t have any relevant to teaching, so your opinions are irrelevant.'

Not at me but, what? She doesn't 'have any relevant to teaching'? You seriously believe you must be in a profession to have an opinion. How does that work then, so you have no opionion whatsoever for example on drs, nurses, prime misters, education ministers or hairdressers?

You must do the job to have an opinion. Riiiiight.

No. Noble never said that. But this is the level of stupidity from Flaxmeadow that it warrants this response.

And by the way I will never pass judgement on a brain surgeon and feel perfectly okay if I'm told my opinion is not relevant in the subject. You know why? BEcause I'm not a brain surgeon.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/01/2021 20:37

@noblegiraffe hes at college and has been having live lessons from beginning and seems ok but obviously older and class more displined etc
Colleges have had it easier in respect they have had blended learning As such , although he is doing a sports course so not a lot of practical which has made things difficult

WherethebejesusisGav · 02/01/2021 20:37

How does that work then, so you have no opionion whatsoever for example on drs, nurses, prime misters, education ministers or hairdressers?

I wouldn’t advise any of them about how to do their job. Or about how they should manage the demands of working in a pandemic.

So yeah, I have opinions. I’ll rephrase: “your advice is worthless and I’m not interested in your opinions about how I do my job.” Ok?

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/01/2021 20:39

@SansaSark there are tons of jobs you can't join a union , myself and dh have never had that option and worked in construction , catering , admin , shops etc

itsgettingweird · 02/01/2021 20:39

@noblegiraffe

you are not speaking to one of your pupils now

That's obvious. My pupils actually respond to feedback and make corrections when they've gone wrong.

Flaxmeadow · 02/01/2021 20:40

It’s always good to know what expertise posters have.

Are you being sarcastic about retail staff? How nice of you

You don’t have any relevant to teaching, so your opinions are irrelevant.

Wow

I wouldn’t dream of treating people who work in retail the way you are currently treating teachers.

I haven't treated any teachers in anyway other then polite. Infact I don't recognise the teachers supporting strike action here in comparison to the teachers I know in real life, who I get on well with and who seem more than happy to go to work

This is a debating forum. People are free, or should be, to discuss whether or not they agree or disagree with strike action.

I really wish people on these threads would stop bossing people about so much, or reporting them

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/01/2021 20:41

@WherethebejesusisGav but you do get paid by taxpayers so you will be held accountable by them that is a fact and nature of the job and plenty of teAchers have told people on here how its safe to work x y z , even every school will differ in all honesty

itsgettingweird · 02/01/2021 20:41

@Panickingpavlova

It's getting weird, I've been with the class all day but I think in light of the new strain I'll have to go and sit in car too.
It's actually quite social. Our car park is either side of the drive to entrance. Everyone drives in forwards and we sit in our boots and chat Grin social distancing at it's best.

Bit chilly though!

year5teacher · 02/01/2021 20:42

you are not speaking to one of your pupils now

Ah, this old chestnut. A classic.

ChattyLion · 02/01/2021 20:43

I think the unions are quite right, fully support teachers too.

ChloeCrocodile · 02/01/2021 20:44

there are tons of jobs you can't join a union

GMB takes members from literally every job. In the UK every worker has the legal right to join a union.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 02/01/2021 20:45

'wouldn’t advise any of them about how to do their job. Or about how they should manage the demands of working in a pandemic.'

But many if not most of us are parents and are directly affected by walk outs. We, I'm afraid, are allowed an opinion. We are all coping with life in the pandemic so again, we can understand the risks involved. The CMO tells us frequently it is finding the balance between the least harm possible.

year5teacher · 02/01/2021 20:45

I haven't treated any teachers in anyway other then polite

Think you're forgetting that some of us have seen a lot of your posts since March. You haven't been polite, you have been frequently very belittling.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/01/2021 20:46

@chloecrocodile not that simple though it really isn't as one person joining whilst in a large organisation it will mean nothing

WherethebejesusisGav · 02/01/2021 20:47

Flax

Well what expertise do you have that qualifies you to tell teachers how they should manage working in a pandemic?

I wouldn’t tell people working in retail how to do it.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/01/2021 20:48

@chloecrocodile do you work in another sector as its just not a done thing to join a union and get support in most walks of life , I mean a construction company would probAbly laugh at dh if he said he was part of a union

Abraxan · 02/01/2021 20:49
@SansaSark there are tons of jobs you can't join a union , myself and dh have never had that option and worked in construction , catering , admin , shops etc
All workerss_ in the UK are allowed to join a union, and you cannot be discriminated against for being a union member.

Here is a list of those available,s in the uk: www.gov.uk/government/publications/public-list-of-active-trade-unions-official-list-and-schedule/trade-unions-the-current-list-and-schedule

Some have restrictions or are only for specific professions. Others are for any worker.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/01/2021 20:50

@WherethebejesusisGav but other teachers ok this thread have told others how they are protected and safe without knowing it all
And im sure if tesco / lidl posted it was closing tomorrow you would have an opinion on it one way or another

WherethebejesusisGav · 02/01/2021 20:50

We, I'm afraid, are allowed an opinion

Of course you are. But your opinion is irrelevant because you don’t have the faintest idea about working in a school.

🤷🏻‍♀️

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/01/2021 20:51

@Abraxan but it doesn't happen in the private sector its really not the same as being in a union with numerous other members of your profession

Beebityboo · 02/01/2021 20:52

Does anyone have any idea where parents stand if (as I think is now looking more likely) they open the schools as planned? If the people we trust to teach/look after our children are saying it isn't safe to be in school, how can parents be legally obligated to send them? As it stands I have to choose to either lie to the school, tell the truth and risk prosecution, or deregister (as I already have had to do for my eldest DD). I'm CV and in a real mess over this.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 02/01/2021 20:53

@WherethebejesusisGav now your being unreasonable we All went to school , many of us have dc in schools and we may have friends and families who work in schools many of them have different experiences and opinions and again taxpayers can have an opinion and they are also parents of children you teach ,
