All to delay opening.

OP posts:

I think London schools are a bit different to in other areas. They seem to be larger on smaller plots and children seem to travel further to their choice of school. Also more reliance on public transport. All things that make schools being open more problematic at the moment.

I’m not sure that’s really the case for most primaries, where catchments are absolutely tiny?

JassyRadlett · 01/01/2021 19:32

Though agree that public transport reliance is inevitably higher overall in London.

blueangel19 · 01/01/2021 19:32

You have the moaners now that they need to homeschool. What do the people want ? if the schools are open it is because it is dangerous if they are closed because children do not learn from home. And all the guardian readers stirrers are the worse.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 01/01/2021 19:33

Can we please shut all education settings in tier 4 including nurseries?

Ilovegreentomatoes · 01/01/2021 19:34

Feel like nurseries are the forgotten ones but it is still spreading there .

sortmylifeoutplease · 01/01/2021 19:35

It made so little sense to keep some boroughs open...the cynic in me thinks it was a petty response to Greenwich wanting to move to online learning for a few days before the Christmas break and the government threatening court action. Do I think the government are that petty and reckless? Yep.

DoThePropeller · 01/01/2021 19:35

We border London and have over 700 cases per 100k, higher than Richmond, Kingston, Hammersmith and Fulham etc and share the same hospital network. How is it safe for our children?! I really wish the media would ask these questions too and use their influence as a force for transparency in decision-making.

It’s a fucking disaster and Gavin Williamson should be fired (and Boris too, whilst you’re at it).

Nat6999 · 01/01/2021 19:41

With how much they say the mutation is increasing transmission it wouldn't surprise me if schools aren't back by half term.

The media don't seem to be asking challenging questions - it is really odd.
JM10 · 01/01/2021 19:42

It’s not good enough for it just to be ‘such a shame’ for my kids and countless others.

No, it isn't. This is why I really hope our schools won't shut. We are tier 4, but nowhere near as bad as London and my children basically get a few worksheets when school is shut. The teachers don't even mark any work they submit.

SnowmanDrinkingSnowballs · 01/01/2021 19:43

What on earth will happen over universities?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/01/2021 19:46

Bloody hope they don't close all tier 4. We are in tier 4 but our rates are only 168 per 100k. If they were higher I'd understand.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 01/01/2021 19:47

Our nursery hasn’t had one case- no you don’t shut them!!!!

FrostedCranberries · 01/01/2021 19:49

What on earth will happen over universities?

All online. But adults dont need supervision like children do.

Their return is delayed. But they're mostly online anyway.
SophieB100 · 01/01/2021 19:55

Can anyone explain me why GW is still in charge?

er, erm, alas, no.

Sky also picked this up:

This is just the start - all schools will be closed within two weeks.

The question is not why is he still in charge, it’s how the bloody hell did he get the job in the first place!
littlestpogo · 01/01/2021 20:02

Not just the media - where are the opposition parties on this. They should be asking for explanation as to how boroughs were identified and also what needs to be reached before primaries can open again.

The London boroughs asked exactly this question and it appears atm the DfE just u- turned so no one is the wiser.

There is also a fast approaching issue if they don’t reopen of parts of the country having primaries ( and secondaries?) closed for an extensive period. There should at least be an acknowledgment that online learning is not equivalent to in school ( and it’s the issue that NW/NE/Midlands schools had previously with frequent bubble popping made even larger)

formerbabe · 01/01/2021 20:05

I'm fucking fuming. Cannot believe the cavalier attitude displayed towards children and education. Are they gonna be shut all year like last time? Whilst the children worthy of an education thanks to their key worker parents get educated and socialised. This is disgusting.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 01/01/2021 20:08

Perhaps they could shut the fucking airports and stop every airhead towie, love island cast member from travelling to Dubai for “work”, and fine people for mixing before screwing over an entire generation of unaffected children.

Our school provided childcare not education for the keyworker children. How can they educate a group of children from 4 to 11 all in one classroom? They watched films all day.
formerbabe · 01/01/2021 20:12

Once again children treated like shit. I'm assuming golf clubs will be open and garden centres... again

MajesticWhine · 01/01/2021 20:13

Universities are a bit more complicated - especially when the accommodation has been paid for. Hard to stop someone living in a flat they are paying for. Even if everything goes online - some will want to go back to be with their friends and live their student lifestyle.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 01/01/2021 20:13

Government have learnt nothing from spring. They could aim to get 1 year group in school for a wk and the rotate
