Do you know of any people who have tested positive as a result of Christmas Day mixing?

I'm thinking cases will start emerging around now of cases that were spread by Christmas mixing?

I know 2 now, after not knowing anyone personally that had COVID throughout the whole pandemic. Christmas Day my brother in law and his wife broke all of the rules, they just had to go to her families houses (multiple... sisters for breakfast, mum and dads for lunch etc) they all gathered for a big Christmas dinner, at least 3 separate households but probably more like 4 or 5, around 15 people including children and elderly relatives. Her mum is an NHS worker who tested positive on the 27th. My brother in law started feeling unwell and tested positive yesterday. The most ridiculous thing is that my BIL wife is extremely vulnerable, multiple health issues that make this really dangerous for her. She's been going on all year about needing to shield and getting all of the sympathy from everyone, not to mention people running around trying to help and support her all year to make things safer for her and then she goes and does this. She was posting Facebook statuses in December about needing to shield again for her own safety. I can't believe they've been so stupid. As much as I dislike her though (I'm aware that's probably obvious!) I don't want anything bad to happen to her, my BIL adores her and it would devastate him if anything happened. So now I'm worried that her own bloody stupidity will cause some god awful difficult and heartbreaking times for our family.

@Beansprout30

We are currently isolating after my SIL tested positive and we saw them Xmas day. We’ve followed all rules previously and wish we hadn’t taken the chance now but we did
Did the households all isolate for the 2 weeks beforehand?
Benjispruce2 · 01/01/2021 09:39

Everyone I know didn’t mix on Christmas Day. Didn’t make sense.

Whenwillow · 01/01/2021 09:40

Yes

hellsbells99 · 01/01/2021 09:42

@lovelemoncurd Totally agree unfortunately

Aurorie11 · 01/01/2021 09:43

@ihatethecold my Mum died in just over 72 hours after first symptoms in the first wave

iamallamaeatingabanana · 01/01/2021 09:43

Yes

Beansprout30 · 01/01/2021 09:44

No, we’ve all only been to work which is where SIL has likely picked it up from

JacketPotatoQueen · 01/01/2021 09:45

We didn’t mix over Xmas or NY at all. But last night our neighbours were having a very loud party, lots of people in there, v loud music etc. So some people are definitely ignoring the guidance, and obviously don’t care who knows either, judging by the noise!

Willyoujustbequiet · 01/01/2021 09:46

Yes loads. Mostly hospital staff and teachers.

Surely the one that died yesterday wasn’t infected on Xmas day. That’s very quick.

Very quick: infected on the 25th, a day or two for symptoms to emerge, a day or two to be be tested and get results takes them up to around 29th, and by the 31st they were dead. confused”

The testing timings are irrelevant. Got infected on 25th, symptoms started at earliest 48 hours later on 27th. That’s five days ago now so I suppose it’s possible.

ScrapThatThen · 01/01/2021 09:49

A friend is having to isolate because someone she sang in a choir with at Christmas (thought this would not have been allowed? Maybe it was outside?) has tested positive.

Smileyoriley · 01/01/2021 09:51

No, I haven’t heard of anyone

Longtalljosie · 01/01/2021 09:51

@Aurorie11 - I’m so sorry for your loss. That must have been horrific. Flowers

MadameBlobby · 01/01/2021 09:52

Scottish CMO said yesterday/today is likely to be when Christmas mixers are most infectious.

autumnboys · 01/01/2021 09:54

I know two separate people who got a message to self isolate on Boxing Day, in respect of contacts on the 19th/20th December. Fortunately they’ve both remained clear, but if that’s a usual notification lag, that’s got the potential to cause a big spike.

SoftSheen · 01/01/2021 09:54

Not yet. But I suspect there was more mixing in the period leading up to Christmas, with shopping and visiting pubs and restaurants (before widespread Tier 3/4), than there was on Christmas Day.

In our case, we probably had quite a few contacts in the first part of December since the children were at school and I needed to do some 'non-essential' shopping (ie Christmas presents).

In later December, we really didn't see anyone except for the two people we saw for about 4 hours on Christmas Day, with careful social distancing, ventilation etc in place. I don't know how typical our experience is though.

ancientgran · 01/01/2021 09:56

I know a family who are self isolating because of mixing, big extended family group all together and then one confirmed. Remains to be seen if anyone else got it.

Groovee · 01/01/2021 09:58

My dd's flatmate went home for Christmas. Her dad came home from working off shore. Felt poorly so arranged a rest, positive. Within 3 days the whole house is down with it.

GoldenPoppy · 01/01/2021 10:00

Yes my friend. Her mum became symptomatic on boxing day. She tested positive yesterday.

ancientgran · 01/01/2021 10:00

We didn’t mix over Xmas or NY at all. But last night our neighbours were having a very loud party, lots of people in there, v loud music etc. So some people are definitely ignoring the guidance, and obviously don’t care who knows either, judging by the noise! My cul de sac of 8 houses was quiet last night, last week you couldn't move for all the visitors cars plus more on drives. I think 6 houses had guests staying, some for 5 days. I wonder if they were all quiet yesterday as they are self isolating now? Or ill? Not a sign of any of them yesterday or this morning, I've been out to the bins a couple of times as collection due tomorrow and normally others would be doing the same. Maybe it is hangovers.

ancientgran · 01/01/2021 10:01

@Aurorie11 so sorry for your loss. I hope you are OK.

Aurorie11 · 01/01/2021 10:05

@Longtalljosie and @ancientgran thank you. It was over 8 months ago, I get the impression that lots of people think COVID is a long drawn out illness but it can be very swift. Thankfully for my Mum it was relatively peaceful and she died in her sleep

Kazzyhoward · 01/01/2021 10:06

Yep, my sister and her entire family have tested positive. (Sister, husband, her BIL and family, 4 children, 2 grandchildren).

We had a massive fall out because she wanted us to go (I'm ECV) with our mother (85 years old) to have a house full of about 20 people, but I refused and told my mother to refuse too. We had our own separate Christmas at my house with my OH and son.

Sister is still blaming everyone else for them catching covid - nothing to do with them breaking the restrictions for months, and still not talking to us or mother, even though it's pretty obvious we'd have caught it if we'd gone to theirs for Christmas.

Some people are deluded and pretty stupid.

speakout · 01/01/2021 10:06

Yes, 12 young people as a result of a drinks party at a flat.
Twelve out of 15 tested positive.
