Do you know of any people who have tested positive as a result of Christmas Day mixing?

I'm thinking cases will start emerging around now of cases that were spread by Christmas mixing?

Yes a friend's cousin tested positive just after Christmas and they were sitting beside them at the table. They are currently awaiting their results

Heronsnest · 01/01/2021 09:04

Yes, 2 people.
One with an underlying health condition who made the judgment that the odds were against him contracting the virus. He is now quite unwell.
A lesson to us all.

BigBadVoodooHat · 01/01/2021 09:04

@ihatethecold

Surely the one that died yesterday wasn’t infected on Xmas day. That’s very quick.
Very quick: infected on the 25th, a day or two for symptoms to emerge, a day or two to be be tested and get results takes them up to around 29th, and by the 31st they were dead. Confused

Other than a couple of people who saw their bubble, I really don't know anyone that mixed households on Xmas day. Many chose not to even meet their bubble. I work with lots of people in two places, have a fair few friends and know the neighbors in our cul-de-sac, so hoping this represents most of the borough and will prevent numbers escalating due to Xmas.

saffire · 01/01/2021 09:05

The people I know were ill over Xmas. The other that had a positive a few days ago probably got it at work (hospital).

Toilenstripes · 01/01/2021 09:05

Yes, she had family round but just a few. I guess they’ve all been exposed now.

Pinotwoman82 · 01/01/2021 09:08

Yes 1 person and now all family that were there now isolating. This is the reason my children are not going to school until the middle of January. Get the Christmas and new year infections out of the way

saffire · 01/01/2021 09:10

@onlyreadingneverposting8 North Essex is very quickly catching up with the rest unfortunately.

UsernameNotSaved · 01/01/2021 09:11

Yep, six friends met for Christmas drinks just before Christmas. Said it was ok because they would sit outside 🤨 they laughed at me when I said I wouldn’t come because I didn’t want to risk it. It rained, they sat inside drinking half the night. Five out of six tested positive just after Christmas and then panicked about who else they’d seen over Christmas. Three of them are asymptomatic and only got tested because others had it. I’m not going to lie, they’re not getting any sympathy from me!

ItsA1WayStreet · 01/01/2021 09:11

Yes - a friend's son came back for Xmas day - now mum, dad, daughter, grandad and aunty all tested positive

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 01/01/2021 09:14

@saffire yes - since we moved at the end of October it's increased from 11/100,000 to over 400! Especially worrying for us as we have a just adult son who is back having to shield. I am beyond angry with how things have been handled - especially since September.

MotherExtraordinaire · 01/01/2021 09:14

My friend's nan is now in hospital after seeing family Christmas eve. Even though so early since symptoms started, the outlook apparently isn't great.
This is sadly one of the many who previously didn't feel the need to follow the guidance as she's a teacher and constantly surrounded by others. (I'd have thought this would have led to greater following, alas not).

VintageStitchers · 01/01/2021 09:16

Yes. I live in a rural area so you do get to know about these sorts of things very quickly. .

We know that staff in two of the main stores (one a supermarket and the other a farm/diy supplies shop) caught the virus at parties they attended just before Christmas. Several staff in the supermarket are isolating and a couple definitely have symptoms.

I’m really annoyed because both shops have stayed open and not closed for a deep clean, which I thought they were obliged to do?

We also know a local taxi driver who picked up the virus from two stupid English holidaymakers who flew over here for Christmas. There’s another case in a family in the next village, again caused by their visiting family from overseas coming home for Christmas. FFS!

megletthesecond · 01/01/2021 09:17

I don't know who mixed at Xmas. My family didn't and my neighbours were all keeping their heads down.

However I went to town yesterday and it was the first time I'd seen a small queue to get into our testing centre (Basingstoke). So, holy shit ShockAngry.

Chewbecca · 01/01/2021 09:19

No, but we were tier 4 at the time & everyone I know didn't mix at Christmas anyway.

ShakespearesSisters · 01/01/2021 09:19

My friend and her mum are isolating. They helped an old man who they saw collapse outside their house Christmas day. When he was taken to hospital he was given a test and it came back positive. He had been to the OAP Christmas Dinner the day before too. Neither have symptoms yet, which is good as were close enough to get splattered with vomit. Crossing fingers for them.

Velvian · 01/01/2021 09:20

I know loads at the moment, my friend, her parents, grandmother (lives with parents), her dsis's household of 4 & her DSCs awaiting test results and they are in a 7 person household. Grandmother in hospital, dad possibly in too now, as he was not doing well.

My aunt and uncle and possibly my cousin's household. DH's aunt, uncle, cousins and all of their in laws (4 households).

Rosehassometoes · 01/01/2021 09:22

Yes
I had a home visit cancelled for this reason.

Velvian · 01/01/2021 09:22

We are all in East Anglia, the new strain has really taken hold. My friend only saw her mum outside, as friend is CV.

Tittie · 01/01/2021 09:25

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss

That’s assuming people only mixed on Christmas Day. Many will have done so for the whole time and then many more at new year.
I know of lots of people who mixed over Christmas - not just Xmas day, and not limiting it to 3 households. One has recently recovered from covid and spent some time in hospital with it, so you'd think she'd take it seriously!

It's made me see how naive I was really, for thinking people will do as they're told. DH and I are seen as the boring squares for sticking to the rules Hmm

ShinyGreenElephant · 01/01/2021 09:25

@ihatethecold my gran broke a bone in October and was admitted to hospital. Tested positive 2 days later (no symptoms yet at that point) and 10 days later she was dead. It can be very quick.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 01/01/2021 09:26

How would anyone know where they picked it up from? Unless they literally hadn't left the house at all, except for Christmas Day.

Topsyandtimison37 · 01/01/2021 09:26

Just want to say thanks everyone for all your information on mumsnet. I've learnt more about covid being on here than the news! It is really helpful as I feel like I know what's going on and how people are feeling also ot was an eye opener reading about people who had just a cold but tested positive. I've since made family aware of what I read and asked them to be mindful of this. Love you guys x

Beansprout30 · 01/01/2021 09:27

We are currently isolating after my SIL tested positive and we saw them Xmas day. We’ve followed all rules previously and wish we hadn’t taken the chance now but we did

HairyToity · 01/01/2021 09:28

We've all tested positive. We were luckily contacted by track and trace before Christmas and able to isolate. I think the schools closing might slow the spread.
