News is that people who have had first dose are only getting second 3 months later. Against the guidelines of the org who made the vaccine.

I said this rush to push it out would result in, how are they going to follow up and make sure they get the second?

And here we go. Second dose not organised. UK govt say this is AOK.

FFS. I'd rather they took the time to do it properly. But hey. Pissup in a brewery situation again.

I said a few days ago to DH. Are they properly tracking this to make sure the follow up jab isn't missed?

I was too optimistic. Govt have decided second jab isn't that important.

FFS.
@MarshaBradyo because the data they’re relying on for Oxford came from an accidental subgroup (again). The dosing delay was a result of the trial being halted for the Transverse Myelitis case meaning the participants got their second dose late.
I don't think the USA trial data has been included yet, the MHRA refer to data from Brazil, South Africa and the UK.

MarshaBradyo · 01/01/2021 16:28

@ChloeCrocodile

Why were the trials designed in a way that was light on over 65?

Because when testing an experimental medicine you tend to want to trial it with people who will be more resilient to potential side-effects. So you pick youngish adult volunteers, with no underlying health conditions.

Ok thanks. Did Pfizer do it differently?
cathyandclare · 01/01/2021 16:31

I know that in Leeds Elland Road has been booked as a vaccine hub. training and set up is under way , but I think it will be GPs, care homes, hospitals first then the big hubs in a couple of weeks.

I'm a volunteer medic that hasn't been contacted too. I've heard all the set up from a friend who is high up in the trust.

Wakeupin2022 · 01/01/2021 16:33

I thought there were going to be huge vaccination centres, or vaccinations in pharmacies, drive-through vaccination centres

There is definitely a large scale vaccination centre being set up in my county. Seen it with my own eyes.

And I know churches etc are being used locally.

My parents got flu vaccination at a football stadium & I imagine it would be similar this time.

Thanks seems quite high at 41%

Over 56 though

JassyRadlett · 01/01/2021 16:48

If you have a trial group weighted towards younger white people then it’s likely to see less severe disease isn’t it. That’s the criticism.

But when taken alongside the Phase II trial results on immune response there is reason for cautious confidence.

At any rate, the suggestion that only the elderly need protection is wrong-headedly solely focusing on death data, rather than our current serious issue which is the threat that the health services will be overwhelmed. With a median hospital admission age of 73, and significant hospitalising of middle aged men in particular, even if the most pessimistic and unlucky interpretation of the data turned out to be true, vaccination providing more benefit to younger cohorts would provide wider benefits, both in terms of reducing transmission but also in terms of health service impact.

Lets just get this straight.

Oak is an anti vaxxer determined to say that whatever we do in the uk is not sufficiently good enough because 'Oxford' and why cant we be Israel.

Based on bullshit, misinformation and false equivalence.

Can we move on now. Its tiresome.

This 100%.
Dinnafashyersel · 01/01/2021 16:56

Israel expecting to have vaxxed 80% of all 60+ within the next week, so we will soon have a much larger real World evidence base on efficacy. Will be interesting to see what approach they take to maintaining lockdown / opening up.

Sorry been hungover and now looks like I have an awful lot of catching up to do.

Interesting reading so far I haven't changed my mind yet though.

You dodged a billet by having a hangover I wouldn’t waste my time catching up

Absolutely nothing new
Lots of hyperbole and nonsense

Might as well turn TV on and fester

Bullet

Oaktree55 · 01/01/2021 17:21

@RedToothBrush I am certainly not an anti vaxer!!!

I think our Government has led us from one disastrous decision to the next and can see the vaccination issue being the next.

I’ve made it very clear I think the other vaccine candidates are amazing including Novavax in all likelihood

Oaktree55 · 01/01/2021 17:24

@RedToothBrush it’s a ridiculously cheap shot to use when I have a point about the Government response and the vaccination issues. Doesn’t mean holding our Gov to account means I’m anti vax!!!!

Pretty much.

Oaktree, who thinks everyone is incompetent and stupid except them. And that no vaccine will ever be good enough.

If it's a choice of their opinion or the JCVI, well, yeah.

In the meantime, I'll happily roll up my sleeve for whatever vaccine, as soon as I'm offered it. And will be encouraging those I love to do likewise.

Motorina · 01/01/2021 17:25

The JCVI has reached a short position statement on their decision today. Apologies if this has been linked to already - it's at app.box.com/s/uwwn2dv4o2d0ena726gf4403f3p2acnu

Oaktree55 · 01/01/2021 17:28

@Motorina I think anyone who’s been following what’s going on can see the issues. I don’t see why it’s too much to ask that the U.K. gets one of the better vaccine candidates, transparency and a decent vaccine rollout. Why is everyone so happy to settle for such incompetence?

MarshaBradyo · 01/01/2021 17:29

Weren’t we first to start with Pfizer and third on global list? Is that really a bad rollout

Oaktree55 · 01/01/2021 17:33

@MarshaBradyo as I understand it other countries have increased orders for the mRNA and have deliveries coming sooner. I’m not sure why our supply of Pfizer is so slow compared to others. I use Israel as an example of what can be achieved. I just sense there’s total incompetence at play. Evidenced by expecting GP’s to phone thousands of over 80’s to cancel their shots. Can you imagine how long each of those calls will take with an elderly person, without just hanging up on them?

It’s just crazy.

MarshaBradyo · 01/01/2021 17:35

Oak Israel is remarkable but I read somewhere, maybe on here, conscription to the army has helped them leap ahead?

JassyRadlett · 01/01/2021 17:36

I’m not sure why our supply of Pfizer is so slow compared to others

Have you asked Germany how their Pfizer supplies are going?

formerEUcitizen · 01/01/2021 17:36

Being first to start means nothing if we quickly get overtaken in the doses being administered by other countries rolling it out quicker.

Speed is what matters ultimately (currently we are not meeting even the slow rate proposed for the fragile Pfizer vaccine, let alone the rapid mass vaccination required for the AZ Oxford vaccine to make the difference that we all need).

CoolKitkat · 01/01/2021 17:38

@RedToothBrush I think you're being pretty unfair. @Oaktree55 is presenting the factual information as we know it, evidence in the public domain.

Some people on this thread just want to have blind faith in any decisions being taken, but healthy debate and scrutiny doesn't mean you're anti-vax or predicting the downfall of the world.

I hope this strategy is successful, but as others have said - it's a gamble. As I said upthread, if the government suddenly advocated half-doses for everyone, would you be happy with that? Based on no data? But everyone gets a little bit of the dose, and some immunity?
