I want to see more of (my hero) Dr Chris Smith on the telly. He talks so much sense and I can understand him without feeling dumbed down.

I wonder if MNHQ could get him on here for a Q & A? (I expect he's busy)

I think we all know people who have to pee all over good news and then talk ad nasum about their own ills and how they are so 'special' that no vaccine will work on them, or they need double, or both doses or something else which I cannot be bothered to think about.

Thank goodness for this thread and the links. Those school threads are just dreadful and so many of them saying the same thing.

theotherfossilsister · 04/01/2021 10:55

Hello, here after being terrified by the active threads. I hate people who scaremonger. They must be scared themselves I guess though and want reassurance.

Blue sky in Edinburgh but very cold. Might risk a walk today.

theotherfossilsister · 04/01/2021 10:59

@fuzzypuffling there's a great group on Facebook for rheumatology stuff called Arthur's place social. Most of their stuff is supportive and science led.

I have RA which doesn't stop me getting it. We're starting IVF this year though, so unless I postpone until three months after first dose I cannot have jab.

notevenat20 · 04/01/2021 10:59

If Israel keep vaccinating at break neck speed we might get more evidence about onward transmission before the research is complete

That is an excellent point!

EngineeringFix · 04/01/2021 11:15

Look no offence was intended. I'm not best nuanced enough clearly.

EngineeringFix · 04/01/2021 11:18

Can't type either! Strike out "best". I don't know where that came from.

Crazycatlady83 · 04/01/2021 11:30

@EngineeringFix I know that they don’t work on “common sense” but I would have thought the vaccines would have reduced transmission. Surely if it’s 70% effective of stopping you getting covid (as opposed to 100% effective at stopping serious covid), then when the virus is circulating, it will only have 30% chance of infecting a vaccinated person (rather than 100% chance as it does now). If it doesn’t infect that vaccinated person (cos the odds are against it) then it will move onto the next person (they may also be vaccinated, so only has a 30% chance of infecting) and so on and so forth.

That doesn’t seem to take into consideration the growing evidence that asymptomatic are less likely to spread the virus and other vaccines have a higher rate of success (95% for pfizer)

Is it wishful thinking that they are just being overcautious?

TheChineseChicken · 04/01/2021 11:53

No arguing on this thread! Wink

Spiratedaway · 04/01/2021 11:56

Ladies is there any positive news on vaccine working on SA variation I just see doom and gloom

Crazycatlady83 · 04/01/2021 12:21

@TheChineseChicken lol! No arguing from me! Just genuinely wondered, as a complete and utter lay person if that made sense!

midgebabe · 04/01/2021 12:31

The current vaccine may be less effective against the South Africa strain, which is not yet well established in the uk, but it is expected that it would be a small tweak to sort that, quick to do. No need for more testing. Like normal flu vaccine tweaks

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 04/01/2021 12:33

I read something that said that when they had said less effective they meant up to 20% less effective but the way people are talking on other threads you would think they meant completely useless.

AlexandraEiffel · 04/01/2021 12:52

I also read something that suggested it was actually more of a 'might be' comment from a scientist (re the SA variant). The media like to spin scientists considering possibilities and gathering/analysing evidence as if it's already fact.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 04/01/2021 12:54

It absolutely was a might be comment. Agree completely about possibilities being spun as facts.

OrangeBananaFish · 04/01/2021 13:01

Apologies @EngineeringFix I just saw the bit about the continuing masks and SD so just got all down, probably partly to do with Monday morning blues too. I know the main aim is to reduce deaths and serious illness, but we also want to get things opened up again. In paper, this should be great for me. WFH, DCs old enough to keep themselves entertained, but I'm hating it. My mental health is shot and I really need things to ease at some point.

chri55ie · 04/01/2021 13:04

And that is why I am very selective about what I read on Twitter now. It’s full of ‘experts’ with their opinions but writing it as complete fact. I find it very anxiety inducing.
tootyfruitypickle · 04/01/2021 13:09

I really think mumsnet hq has a bit of responsibilty to control some of the fake news and scaremongering on this site , some of the threads are utterly bonkers. Have these people never had tough times with no end in sight before ? And we have an end in sight for this !!

tootyfruitypickle · 04/01/2021 13:11

It’s all going to be ok! Vaccines are coming , they will help reduce disease at the least and will be tweaked and improved on each time we get them , to the point that there will be so low levels of the illness some people may not even bother to go back for renewed jabs eventually.

We’ve got a shitty 2-3 months ahead but it will then be better.

FourTeaFallOut · 04/01/2021 13:11

Looks like there's momentum in some American states to consider a dosing delay.

www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/01/03/its-time-consider-delaying-second-dose-coronavirus-vaccine/

"But as Mike Tyson famously said, “Everybody has a plan until they’ve been punched in the mouth.”

I think they've chosen an apt quote.

User numbers likely shoot through the roof at times like this; if governments the world over can't get Mark Zuckerberg to can the misinformation I can't see us having any luck with Mumsnet.
tootyfruitypickle · 04/01/2021 13:15

I just can’t believe how hysterical people are. I’m literally agog today.

Let’s hope after this there is significantly more empathy for people with long term ill health or facing life threatening illnesses - including more funding for research, and more support with welfare and housing .

FourTeaFallOut · 04/01/2021 13:18

I'll try to link again, the above didn't work.

www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/01/03/its-time-consider-delaying-second-dose-coronavirus-vaccine/

FourTeaFallOut · 04/01/2021 13:18

Sorry, don't know why it won't link.

FuzzyPuffling · 04/01/2021 13:27

EngineeringFix I understood your sentence completely. A a northerner I often use the phrase "best please" for example, so a misplaced "best" made perfect sense to me!" :)

I read a piece today (Daily Mail - sorry) about how a head lice treatment has shown some promise in reducing deaths an improving recovery times in covid. Might all be another hydroxychloroquine of course.
