Just now. Sad
She’s 81, type 1 diabetic, heart failure, had a massive heart attack in March , worsening vascular dementia. It’s not going to go well is it? My dad who’s end stage dementia in the same home has tested negative but I imagine it’s only a matter of time. The home is riddled with it apparently 😔

I'm so sorry this must be really scary. I hope its a mild illness for her and that your dad and the other residents are OK. Take each step as it comes and remember lots of people in care homes do have mild illness xx

Kenworthington · 31/12/2020 13:38

Thank you @ScrapThatThen I don’t even know whether she has symptoms or whether it’s just a result of mass testing. I was so shocked but the call abs initially thought they were calling to tell me one of them had died (due to the sad voice) I was almost relieved it was ‘just’ Covid Sad

I’m so sorry to hear this. My mum is also in a nursing home. I haven’t seen her since before Lockdown in March as her home never reopened. I haven’t even spoken to her (her condition means she can’t hold a phone etc). I dread the day she may catch it and I’ve gone nearly a year without speaking to her.

Massive unmumsnet hugs. Sending the best of wishes 💐

ScrapThatThen · 31/12/2020 15:32

I hope they will be good about communicating, must be busy time for the carers if they have a few positives. Are you doing OK distracting yourself and not worrying about what you can't do x

BrrrIsland · 31/12/2020 15:38

Oh I’m really sorry to hear this. Flowers

I'm in a similar situation. Got the call about my 80 year old Mum this morning. She's in hospital after an operation went wrong, so it's also not looking good. Thinking of you x

Lockdownlife245 · 31/12/2020 15:43

I’m so sorry to hear this. My grandparents are in their 80’s with various conditions and fortunately had it mildly. They put my nan on steroids immediately due to lung conditions. Can you request this?

Scottishgirl85 · 31/12/2020 15:44

Flowers I hope it is good outcome x

shoofly · 31/12/2020 15:47

It's horrible to get that call, but mil who is 79, very frail with advanced stage Parkinsons and associated dementia, has come out the other side of it. Her mid 80's brother who had a 20 minute visit with her on Christmas Eve, felt that she looked well. She knew him and they had a good conversation. He left feeling it was the most positive visit he'd had with her in months. Flowers and everything crossed for a full recovery.

Jocasta2018 · 31/12/2020 15:52

You've had the call I dread.
Have they said whether your mother has symptoms? I know of several over 90s that have repeatedly tested positive as they were asymptomatic.
Thinking of you Thanks

Porcupineintherough · 31/12/2020 15:56

I wont lie, it could be very serious. But not necessarily. COVID just isnt that serious for some people, regardless of their other health conditions. I've known some very frail elderly people come through it with barely a sniff. I hope it will be like this for your mum and dad.

BringPizza · 31/12/2020 16:05

I'm sorry OP, fingers crossed for them both Flowers

Just to add a little message of positivity my Nan tested positive in her care home, she is 90, lung disease, autoimmune, dementia, a blood disorder, high blood pressure, list could go on, braved ourselves for the worst, this was April, she was completely fine, she was positive for 8/9 weeks but is okay

Kenworthington · 31/12/2020 16:10

Thank you all for your kind words and sorry others are going through it too. She only moved into the home end of October. This time last year she was living independently with my help, by the end of March she was in hospital and never went home.
There won’t be any kind of intervention should she become poorly. Only palliative and painkillers. So I guess time will tell. Flowers to all of you

I work in a care home , we test all workers weekly , and now thanks to the rapid tests we test staff daily so to try to stop covid spread across the wards . We covid clean and have special measures in place to try and stop it entering the home , but it’s scary for all the staff and we all do all we can to keep all residents safe .

Sending positive thoughts ❤️

Spodge · 31/12/2020 16:27

A relative's sister in her late 80s with Parkinson's and vascular dementia got it in a care home, was mildly ill, and is now clear of it.

Sending best wishes.

fizzyp0p · 31/12/2020 16:45

Ahhh OP I'm sorry to hear this. May I ask you how long your Mum has had type 1 diabetes?

Kenworthington · 31/12/2020 17:02

All her life @fizzyp0p. Well practically. Since she was about 30 I think.

My father, 98 years old and with a heart condition, had it in May and recovered.

fizzyp0p · 31/12/2020 19:48

@Kenworthington as a type 1 I just love how strong people like your Mum must be. Sending you lots of love right now d

Mindymomo · 31/12/2020 20:49

I’m so sorry to hear this, I hope carers and care home staff take up the vaccine, if not for themselves, for the residents, they aren’t going out so it must be coming from staff.

Vivana · 31/12/2020 22:27

I work in a care home and just to give you some positive I've seen residents aged over 92 survive the virus with having some bad symptoms and they are now back to being healthy and you would never know. It's not all bad news so please remain positive

seven201 · 01/01/2021 00:30

My grandmother is in a care home and caught covid during a hospital trip (discovered when tested back at the care home). We all thought the covid would be the end of her but she just had a bad cough for a week and then was back to normal. I hope your mum recovers quickly.

caringcarer · 01/01/2021 01:30

Fingers crossed 🤞 for your Mum. Try to stay positive and Skype chat her. Ask staff to help if she struggles to do it alone.
