Just now. Sad
She’s 81, type 1 diabetic, heart failure, had a massive heart attack in March , worsening vascular dementia. It’s not going to go well is it? My dad who’s end stage dementia in the same home has tested negative but I imagine it’s only a matter of time. The home is riddled with it apparently 😔

Fingers crossed for you and your mum OP. My mum caught Covid when she having chemotherapy and had just a had a stroke, and she is also diabetic. It was a very scary time but didn’t develop any symptoms.i hope your mum recovers quickly x

Kenworthington · 01/01/2021 19:04

Hi all thank you for your messages I actually thought I’d posted earlier but apparently not.
Anyway. Now my dad has it too. And he is almost end of life anyway (bedboind for years, hoisted to abs from a huge chair, incontinent , can’t speak, can’t eat solid food. I think this Kay be the thing that will finish him. He’s been this way for 4 years. It will be a devastating blessing

I'm sorry to read this @Kenworthington and I will be thinking of you and your parents Flowers.

Dreamingofvenice · 01/01/2021 19:19

I'm thinking of you. I work in a care home and we had an outbreak in October. 7 residents, 6 of whom recovered and recovered well no long term effects and no need for any of them to go to hospital. My Nan was sadly the 7th who died from it, but she was 94 and any infection would likely to have been the end. It was very peaceful she didnt struggle at all just made comfortable with end of life drugs. End of life visits are allowed.
Some practical advise we dont get provided with N95 masks only the basic surgical ones so might be worth buying yourself one if you did want to go in and visit and added protection for yourself Flowers

TinkersRucksack · 01/01/2021 20:27

My mum tested positive when her nursing home had an outbreak, she is now absolutely fine. Fingers crossed for you and your folks.

LindaEllen · 01/01/2021 20:39

@Kenworthington

Thank you all for your kind words and sorry others are going through it too. She only moved into the home end of October. This time last year she was living independently with my help, by the end of March she was in hospital and never went home. There won’t be any kind of intervention should she become poorly. Only palliative and painkillers. So I guess time will tell. Flowers to all of you
Hey :) just to give you some hope, my 80yo grandad had it in April. He was admitted to hospital incredibly poorly, and we were also told he wouldn't be given any invasive treatment - only palliative care.

He's now back to normal, living at home with my gran (who also recovered from it) phoning me at all hours asking me to how fix his tv/the iPad/the slow cooker.

There's always hope, even when things seem hopeless 💗

newstart1234 · 01/01/2021 20:41

How sad, I’m so sorry. 😔

Whoopsmahoot · 01/01/2021 21:09

So sorry 🙁

harriethoyle · 01/01/2021 21:49

@Kenworthington I also had this call yesterday about my 76 year old Dad, in a dementia care home, having lost my Mum in August (not covid). Am quietly beside myself but trying to take heart from the positive stories on here...

Kenworthington · 02/01/2021 08:23

Hand holding @harriethoyle it’s very worrying.
Trying to not let it show too much for the kids.
Also. Did I mention they all had the vaccine Christmas Eve? A week ago. They waited all that time for the vaccine and it was too late Sad

Sad so sorry to hear this OP. Best wishes for your parents Flowers
RoganJosh · 02/01/2021 15:20

The vaccine might mean they get it much less severely? Maybe?

Kenworthington · 03/01/2021 19:58

Apparently mum is ‘not great’ whatever that means. Has a worsening cough and a temperature. And she also tried to get up to go to the loo and had a fall and wet herself. Just feeling really down today. It’s also Mums 82nd birthday today so I think that’s also hit me hard.
Dad remarkably still has no symptoms. I feel tomorrow onwards is going to be the crucial time in knowing how they are going to react. I think mum is day 4 and dad is now day 3

harriethoyle · 03/01/2021 20:05

Everything crossed @Kenworthington Flowers. Ask for her obs - dad's care home were counting 37.2 degrees as a temperature whereas that wouldn't usually register so please try not to panic

TyroTerf · 03/01/2021 20:06

It will be a devastating blessing

I thought the same when we got the call at the start of November. My mum is bedbound, incontinent, can barely swallow, has no clue who anyone is, been on end of life care since June, and has always had a knack for developing pneumonia, pleurisy etc. But she's still going. Your mum may well do the same, which is hard in its own way.

Porcupineintherough · 03/01/2021 20:10

Sorry to hear that OP. Dont be afraid to ask what they are doing to keep her comfortable. At the very least they should be able to treat the fever and encourage hydration. Can they arrange a video call for you (if appropriate of course)?

harriethoyle · 04/01/2021 21:51

How are you getting on @Kenworthington? GP "saw" Dad today zoom because staff were worried he was in poor fettle but no treatment advised as yet...

Kenworthington · 05/01/2021 13:17

Spoke to care home manager just now. Mums not doing well. On a scale of 1-10, she’s an 8 or 9. Dad still not displaying symptoms. Oh man what a roller coaster

Porcupineintherough · 05/01/2021 13:28

Flowers so sorry.

Bizawit · 05/01/2021 14:13

HairyFloppins · 05/01/2021 14:15

So sorry Op. Thinking of you all.

Sorehandsandfeet · 05/01/2021 14:21

My heart goes out to you! I hope things will take a better turn soon.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 05/01/2021 14:30
