Whats happening in China now?

I have googled but I dont seem to get any answers.
All I seem to be seeing is that China have got rid of it without a vaccine, followed by talk of propaganda blah etc.

But can anyone tell me what has actually happened out there for them to have it under control?

Are they still in some form of lockdown?

@ShanghaiDiva why are the people of Hong Kong wanting to come here then ... maybe you like it and that is good but that is my opinion and I don't think this virus is from someone eating a bat to be honest the wet markets are disgusting places vile and cruel ! And locking up a journalist for 4 years

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 30/12/2020 20:28

I wonder how many Chinese would agree that they are treated appallingly by the CCP?

I wonder what would happen to them if they said they were treated appallingly?

Wishing14 · 30/12/2020 20:35

Can you imagine what the world (and British public) would be saying if covid originated in the UK and the government had attempted to cover it up?

sociallydistained · 30/12/2020 20:40

My friend has been to Shanghai over the Christmas holidays and is now at the Great Wall of China. She is living in Chengdu. Im so jealous of her pics loving life. They seemed to open up as we were closing down. I know they haven't and won't open their borders and everything is tightly watched. But the residents are living unlike us!

Wishing14 · 30/12/2020 20:42

The fact that China has been (supposedly) able to suppress the virus makes it all the more depressing that they initially covered it up and allowed it to spread globally before doing so.

countrygirl99 · 30/12/2020 20:45

What's happening in China? Well there is persecution of journalists who question the government line. There are internment csmps with forced Labour factories. Many of the cities are hideously polluted. Dissidents disappear. Anything else you want to know?

HibernatingTill2030 · 30/12/2020 20:53

[quote Dongdingdong]And don't forget that good old British CJD we inflicted.

@HibernatingTill2030 You can’t seriously believe the impact of CJD was anything like that of Covid? Confused

Calm down Trump.

@LowestEbb so you think this sort of behaviour is acceptable do you?

Well, obviously not, but I was referring to the thinly veiled racism in the post.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 30/12/2020 20:56

And China slowly takes over the world ...

Unsure33 · 30/12/2020 21:04

If they had been that successful in suppressing the virus then it would not have spread in the first place .

mena51 · 30/12/2020 21:20

I can't say I'm not jealous that they're living a normal life right now when my quality of life has been truly shit for the past 9 months.

Also, bit of a generalisation to say that Chinese people are brainwashed into absolute devotion. A lot of it is for show, for an easy life. There's definitely a lack of freedom of speech when it comes to politics, but Chinese nationals tend to avoid bitching about their government to foreigners so I would take all comments with a pinch of salt. If you've actually lived in China and immersed in the culture you'd know exactly what they think of it all...

No supposedly about it: they have suppressed the virus.

Wet markets are not disgusting and cruel. They are found all over Asia. There was one 10 mins walk from my house and it’s a normal market selling meat, eggs, fruit, vegetables etc, no bats, no pangolins...just chicken and pork.
This is completely different from markets which were trading in exotic species. This type of market has been banned since Feb of this year and hopefully the new restrictions are being adhered to.
I can understand Hong Kongese not wanting increased chinese control.

With regard to Han Chinese what is this appalling treatment?
Spiratedaway · 30/12/2020 21:56

@ShanghaiDiva Feb this year they should gave been banned years ago

I think China's record on human and animal rights speaks for itself.

Indeed.
There is still a long way to go in terms of hygiene, markets and treatment of animals, particularly in the poorer regions in China. In Xinjiang province I have seen animals being slaughtered at the side of the road and meat is sold in open air markets with no refrigeration and flies buzzing around.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 30/12/2020 22:16

We ain’t perfect but I’d rather be in lockdown here than partying the New Year in in China.

ScrapThatThen · 30/12/2020 22:23

Ethnic cleansing via forced sterilisation. Yay China indeed.

And I would rather be back celebrating in China. There are many issues that need to be addressed in China, but it really is the most amazing country.
ScrapThatThen · 30/12/2020 22:31

Drones equipped with echoing loudspeakers rebuked Chinese citizens who were not following the rules. The state-run Xinhua news agency has released footage taken from the drones. “Yes Auntie, this drone is talking to you”, one device proclaimed to a surprised woman in Inner Mongolia.

@HibernatingTill2030 Why is it racist to say that China is responsible for the outbreak of Covid-19 and various other pandemics?

Wishing14 · 31/12/2020 07:13

The thing is it’s not Chinese people’s fault, but the government. As a people who were literally starved to death by man made causes in living history, where people were forced to eat anything - the skin from outside onions, the stuffing inside a pillow, actual corpses of dead bodies - it is no surprise as a culture they now eat a wide variety of things, often which as westerners we would stick our noses up at. But the country and the people might be beautiful, I think it is the government that people have reason to have concern with in relation to human rights issues and a history of covering things up to the world.

TillyTopper · 31/12/2020 07:49

I've lived in various cities in China for several years. The society operates very differently - they are very collectivist (as opposed to the UK/Europe where we are individualist). Everything is for common good, family is everything, most people want to comply and generally my friends see the Government as wanting the best for their people and support them (even friends who I know so well they would tell me the truth).

Restrictions are very tight at the moment, every minor outbreak is stamped on. Entire blocks get tested for 1 case, every who has been to a fruit market over several days is tested if there is a case. It's everyone's responsibility to report suspected instances. This level of high surveillance is usual in China and is seen as helping the cause (generally I mean not by absolutely everyone) rather than interfering.

Totally agree it is nothing to do with the Chinese people if is the government who in my view are liars and have blood on their hands

Oh yes, I totally agree with that.
