Whats happening in China now?

Zara50 · 29/12/2020 22:05

I have googled but I dont seem to get any answers.
All I seem to be seeing is that China have got rid of it without a vaccine, followed by talk of propaganda blah etc.

But can anyone tell me what has actually happened out there for them to have it under control?

Are they still in some form of lockdown?

How long before they unleash their next deadly virus on the world?

Calm down Trump.

Swine Flu came from Mexico. And don't forget that good old British CJD we inflicted. China hasn't started every possible pandemic or globally transmitted outbreak we've ever had. Latest thinking is it didn't even start in Wuhan, anyway.

ShanghaiDiva · 30/12/2020 16:25

@PinkSparklyPussyCat

Personally I would hate to live in a country where you are brainwashed into supporting the government and unable to think/speak for yourself. That isn't saying I agree with how we have handled the pandemic either.
I don’t think people were brainwashed. We had no idea when I was in China back in January how serious the virus was and how quickly it was spreading. Dh and I complied because it was the right thing to do, to put our individual freedom to one side to protect others. The same as dh and I have done here. The restrictions on our freedom in China were, ironically, fewer than living here. Work from home for 4 weeks (pay as normal), no entry to non resident compounds, no travel outside province (travle@;# compound restrictions ended months ago)restaurants closed for 5 weeks or so, schools shut and then phased reopening. We were not living in Wuhan, where restrictions were much tighter.
ShanghaiDiva · 30/12/2020 16:27

@Backbee

Gosh, compliance would never be like that over here would it.

Theres a reason for that, and one we should be thankful for.

Grateful that people here are so selfish to ignore restrictions...

I just read something on the BBC that suggests that 500K people in Wuhan have had covid. I don't know what the population of the city is, but that is a lot of people.

About 11 million

It's 11mil. I read this earlier too.
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 30/12/2020 16:52

@ShanghaiDiva I didn't mean being brainwashed about covid specifically, I meant being brainwashed into believing the government no matter what.

I can remember watching the Tianamen Square protests in my history class at school (the teacher explained we were watching history in the making) and even then thinking how disgusting it was that people were not allowed to protest and those that did were killed. The UK has many, many faults, but thank God we don't live like that.

Crazycatlady83 · 30/12/2020 16:54

Busy locking up it’s journalists for reporting about covid.

It's really not a conspiracy. In the first wave of the virus in the UK it was accepted that the confirmed infections underestimated by 10-20% due to lack of testing and this was used to reassure that CFR was not really 15-20%.

If you consider in reverse, if the CFR is really 1% then if 500 die each day there must have been 50,000 symptomatic cases preceding this.

KOKOagainandagain · 30/12/2020 17:17

Meanwhile - what do you know about ivermectin? Scientists and doctors being silenced about treatments used elsewhere in the world? In the western world.

How do you rationalise that given the high infection and death rates, economic devastation etc that mostly affect western so-callled developed countries?

If 'freedom' is the measure, how do you enact this?

We have crossed the rubicon

Really, the Chinese are all brain washed automatons who follow ALL the rules and regulations made by their govt?
Certainly not my experience.

@HibernatingTill2030 You can’t seriously believe the impact of CJD was anything like that of Covid? Confused

Calm down Trump.

@LowestEbb so you think this sort of behaviour is acceptable do you?

Meanwhile in Hong Kong thousands of citizens are desparately trying to avoid Chinese rule. Maybe ask them what system they would prefer to live under.

Abraxan · 30/12/2020 18:07

Friend is currently living and teaching in China.
She's just had a two week holiday over Easter travelling around the country, visiting 3 or 4 areas. Their photographs - which look amazing btw - show life going on almost as normal. They don't even have to wear masks in most places or anything now.
They are back at school (they teach and the children go to school there) without masks, etc now but did have them for all previously.

But it was far stricter over there initially. They were on holiday when it kicked off and weren't allowed back in China, but were able to fly back her unchecked to stay with family. When they were eventually allowed to return they had to wear suits covering most of their body and masks (masks for the children too who are infant/primary school age) and had to go straight home and register there. They weren't locked in their apartment but did have a camera covering the door to ensure they didn't leave. They had to record and report their temperature and symptoms daily. Had anyone recorded a covid symptom they'd have been removed to a hospital place straight away, children not exempt from this. They couldn't have visitors etc and couldn't leave heir flat but people could leave parcels, including non essential items, for them on the doorstep for them to retrieve. They could have other deliveries too and all food was delivered to them during that fortnight.

Probably be shot down but I think it has accidentally released from a lab and the reason I say this is the evil ccp... and I only say this about the ccp not the people !!! They treat their citizens appalling, they are not allowed to speak freely and if they did they disappeared , the way they have treated Hong Kong and the Muslim camps ... I even saw a video on the one child policy I could not watch !

SuperHighway · 30/12/2020 18:20

All property in China is state owned. I wonder if during their strict lockdown the state froze any rental payments so citizens could be holed up for weeks? How would that work here with mortgages and private rentals?

I think you will find for many many Chinese citizens life is very good in China. China has changed massively in the last 20 years with more and more people enjoying a higher standard of living, improvements in health care, changes to the one child policy. I wonder how many Chinese would agree that they are treated appallingly by the CCP? Ironically the spread of the virus is proof of the higher standard of living, 40 years ago far fewer people would have travelled overseas at Chinese New Year.

With the exception of Wuhan citizens were not holed up for weeks. In my city we could leave home as normal. Both the houses we lived in during our time in China were owned by private individuals, not the state.
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 30/12/2020 18:57

@Backbee yes can't believe people can't see the bigger picture here

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 30/12/2020 19:00

@ShanghaiDiva and are the media allowed to report freely ?

ShanghaiDiva · 30/12/2020 19:04

No
For example on the 30th anniversary of Tiananmen Square there was no reporting of the event in China.

Houseofflu · 30/12/2020 19:05

I think a big difference is that people in China usually have more saving. Most of them could last for months without any income. So mortgage and rent were less of a concern.
Properties are definitely not all stated owned.
