Whats happening in China now?

Zara50 · 29/12/2020 22:05

I have googled but I dont seem to get any answers.
All I seem to be seeing is that China have got rid of it without a vaccine, followed by talk of propaganda blah etc.

But can anyone tell me what has actually happened out there for them to have it under control?

Are they still in some form of lockdown?

@ShanghaiDiva thanks for that, so interesting. Seems like a world away from our method, im sure nobody would ever agree to be treated like that over here but like you say, life goes on quite normally in China now while we are still stuck in hell!

It's called compliance. New Zealand behaves in a similar way. They are living like normal.

Rosebuddydo · 30/12/2020 09:21

And Vietnam who have the same population as the UK...

Rosebuddydo · 30/12/2020 09:23

I would chose their option over the disaster that the UK is living. They look at us with pity while we whinge about being entitled to our freedom. It's almost comical....

Cavagirl · 30/12/2020 09:24

With the odd exception it's really nice to read a fact based, balanced thread about covid & China for once, thanks everyone!

Me too! Back in March I posted that i would prefer not to live in a democracy when it comes to managing a pandemic. Several posters called me an idiot. When I look at what is happening now in the uk I wonder if I am still an idiot? There are three basic principles to managing a pandemic: test, trace and isolate. In the uk we failed at all three.
Rosebuddydo · 30/12/2020 09:34

@ShanghaiDiva I know right! That's how I felt too. I grew up in a more 'compliant' country and have found things really difficult in the UK where it's not the same.

itsgettingweird · 30/12/2020 09:44

I read today that they are investigating wuhan having had 500k cases as opposed to the 50k reported.

So I guess what's happening isn't as reported totally.

@RafaIsTheKingOfClay

What was it the WHO said, you need to get in early and control the virus or it’ll control you

The WHO was the one that urged countries not to close borders very early on

I live in China. Life is essentially back to normal - went to Disneyland last week, big party for NYE planned tomorrow etc. I feel very lucky.

It's worth also pointing out that the UKs antibodies testing has also shown a massive underestimating of cases of Covid, with 9% of the population affected, compared to just under 5% in Wuhan. I imagine all countries have seriously underestimated due to asymptomatic/mild cases.

Introvertedbuthappy · 30/12/2020 10:38

Oh and I also had the vaccine last week alongside many of my colleagues (Sinopharm).

BashfulClam · 30/12/2020 10:42

My friend in China (he is British) will be getting his vaccine this week. Late 30’s no underlying health conditions, doesn’t work in healthcare. When the Chinese government tells its citizens to do diverging they comply as the alternative id unthinkable. They locked gown properly. One person from each household was allowed out every second day to go shopping etc. Place of quarantine were locked with magnetic locks with harsh penalties if the locks were broken.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 30/12/2020 10:46

Personally I would hate to live in a country where you are brainwashed into supporting the government and unable to think/speak for yourself. That isn't saying I agree with how we have handled the pandemic either.

That's great and I really am genuinely happy for you and so many other Chinese people. But do you know what China are going to do about animal welfare? Are they going to ban wet markets? How are they going to control disease amongst animals?

Is the vaccine mandatory in China (even for the non-nationals)?

Introvertedbuthappy · 30/12/2020 10:53

There has been a move to regulate the wet markets and they have banned the sale of exotic animals. They have also reclassified dogs as pets as opposed to livestock. A huge deal still to be done though in terms of animal rights.

The vaccine is not compulsory. Myself and other colleagues chose to sign up when it was offered, others didn't (including Chinese colleagues).

AllWashedOut · 30/12/2020 10:55

For those complaining about the UK populace not following the rulz, think about how un-joined up policies have been in the UK, from the failure in Feb to take action at airports while the WHO was on Radio 4 saying there was a last window of opportunity to act, through to the small things like not reopening nail bars when pubs and supermarkets were open. These sorts of illogical acts have cemented a belief of mistrust across the country. Hence field day for conspiracists. People cannot complain this late in the day about selfishness when basic liberties have been affected for, in some cases, no justifiable reason.

Yes, go ahead and blame 'others' or 'the policies'. It's perfectly clear by now what people should be doing to control infection and what the 'spirit' of the rules is.

Backbee · 30/12/2020 11:17

Gosh, compliance would never be like that over here would it.

Theres a reason for that, and one we should be thankful for.

Dongdingdong · 30/12/2020 11:18

Animals are probably still crammed together in cages eating each other's faeces and the next virus is probably brewing.

This. How long before they unleash their next deadly virus on the world (and cover it up until it’s too late to contain?)

@trulydelicious I’m not sure I’ll need to ask. It could be a condition of his work visa I assume.

Spiratedaway · 30/12/2020 11:50

No comment to this thread :-)

Introvertedbuthappy · 30/12/2020 12:22

It's definitely not a condition of his work visa. It's offered to companies and you opt in personally.

An account on Instagram called thetourismteacher is a British lady currently living in China with her DH and DC. The videos that she posts of how life is now is amazing.
