Why are so many people on MN so gleeful at the prospect of them shutting again? Aren't we focusing on the wrong age group to impose weeks/months more isolation and crappiness on? Why does everyone seem so happy at the prospect of shut schools?

Probably been mentioned upthread but many parents of secondary age are over 50.

@bumbleymummy

Not sure why the quote didn’t work. That was to *@Kazzyhoward*
It's going to be at least 3 months before "the vulnerable" are vaccinated. There are also groups of vulnerable people who won't be able to have the vaccination due to their medical condition.

Every parent who has a child at 40 or later, will be in their fifties at some point while their child is at primary school.

That is a huge proportion of parents. In DS' primary school, probably 20% of parents were in their 50s. 30% of parents were obese too.

So actually not an insignificant risk !

I had both my children in my forties, I am mid fifties with two young teenagers, I turned 50 when my youngest was 6.

And at secondary lots of parents will be over 50 before their children finish, if they had children in their 30s which is not unusual. Plus under 50 parents who are CV or CEV. And some 40 year old parents with no underlying conditions have ended up very ill in hospital.

A woman I know who is 50, previously healthy, slim and fit, has been left with a heart condition post Covid. I know a student (21) with long Covid, and of a man in his fifties who has been left with severe brain damage . A good friend (48) has long Covid but is doing well, still some breathlessness and tiredness though, and she has two young children in Primary.
So these are people alive, but damaged by Covid. It isn’t as simple as alive/dead. The damage caused by Covid can have a massive impact on both quality of life and lifespan. A man in his 60s who I know has been left with only 25% lung function. I don’t know large numbers of people who have had Covid, but at least half of the people I know of have been left with issues. I don’t know how this relates to the population as a whole because we aren’t being told the stats for this.

That's really scary (and sad)
