So when will the next lockdown announcement be?

Just that really.
They've been kind and given us Christmas Day and Boxing Day off.
But, they will make an announcement, soon. Right?

OP posts:

Who knows what the review by the 30th will mean. More Tier 4 (he won’t use lockdown as he told us we would never have another one) I suspect and probably rightly so. Watching the London and Kent situation and now other areas such as Essex having the same issues we need to stop this repeating in other areas. And we actually didn’t have Christmas Day and Boxing Day off did we?

LovingLen · 27/12/2020 05:22

Review of tiers on the 30th with some sort of curfew for NYE for all regardless of tier (obviously not people going to work), maybe 6pm-6am

Saltn · 27/12/2020 05:32

There must be a backlog of tests to be completed which is going to cause a jump in numbers. I sent a postal test on the 23rd and not heard a thing. I just dont understand why some countries are fine and we are still knee deep in shit. Why cant those who are vulnerable be protected / placed in lockdown until they are immunised and the rest of us go out and catch it. Surely that's the same as immunisation anyway. This is not a life.

DarceyDashwood · 27/12/2020 05:46

My god people on this thread trying to stop others getting a bit of exercise!!! I am extremely cautious when it comes to Covid - extremely. However getting my 10000 steps in daily is keeping me sane and it’s so important for children that they can get some fresh air and exercise. Just because some posters are happy to lock themselves away - don’t try to impose an outdoor exercise ban on everyone else! 🤦‍♀️

PhilCornwall1 · 27/12/2020 05:51

@nether

I saw someone put their bin out earlier!!

You do know don't you that in lockdown 1, the CEV were actually told not to put their bins out - too risky

Really, Was that on the letter then?
bettybeans · 27/12/2020 05:56

Life won't be normal until at least summer but most likely beyond that. And when I say normal I probs mean lowest tier rather than no tiers and no restrictions. Do our best, take our vaccine jabs when available, that's all we can do.

Saltn · 27/12/2020 06:13

Just look at Germany.. A higher population and a much lower death rate. WTF Hmm

flowerycurtain · 27/12/2020 07:29

Wow there are some hardcore lockdown people on here.

I'm all for a lockdown as I'm in a key industry and we're very very nervous about coping with staff being off isolating.

However saying kids who don't have a garden shouldn't be able to play in the park borders on levels of insanity.

Fresh air, exercise are essential to children.

Posturesorposes · 27/12/2020 07:48

So I’m a vair bad person in that Every time a Mumsnet poster touches my curiosity I advance search a bit because Mumsnet seems to allow that. I felt compelled to do so for @LitPeach because yeh know - they seem warm to the idea of kids being locked in on a semi permanent basis.

Heavens. @litpeach thinks our lives are changed for ever. Christmas will forever be on zoom now. Concerts and events will never in the future of humanity occur ever again.and on the subject matter of children - they like to ensure that their own study 8-10 hours on weekends and through the holidays compulsorily.

Given this valuable context I feel like I understand where they are coming from.

Bubblemonkey · 27/12/2020 08:15

I suspect a full lockdown won’t work. People don’t give a shit like they did back in March when it was unknown.

PhilCornwall1 · 27/12/2020 08:20

Very true.

Plenty of houses around here with multiple people staying over. I bet they arrived on the stroke of 1 minute past midnight on Boxing Day, as we moved into Tier 2. The bastards!! Grin

thelimitdoesnotexist · 27/12/2020 08:25

@LitPeach

The sooner the better! I’m in tier 4 and there are no signs of any lockdown here.

Roads jammed with cars, people out and about as normal walking round parks and sitting on benches. Neighbours popping to the shops for wine and gin Hmm

We need a proper lockdown- no one leaves home at all unless a key worker. Supermarkets shut with food drops provided by the army. £10,000 fines for non key workers caught outside.

Even then I suspect some people would still ‘need’ to pop out for a bottle of Prosecco Hmm

@LitPeach are you the poster who kept on posting about this in almost every thread about a week or so ago?

It isn’t going to happen so please stop.

That's what I thought, although I think 5 grand has been added to the fine.

thelimitdoesnotexist · 27/12/2020 08:28
@SleepingStandingUp I'm not saying anyone should be out sale shopping, I think they're crazy- but the video in that link does not show the bullring busy! That's much quieter than a normal Saturday, let alone the boxing day sales! That's a typical example of the media ramping things up again.
(I'm only tagging you because you shared it, not to have a go at you personally.)
@Honeybobbin. Completely agree. Looks no busier than a normal weekend. What a wind up (and clever photo angle).

justasking111 · 27/12/2020 08:29

According to the telegraph schools and universities lockdown until the end of January is recommended by the scientists so they need to give us as much warning as possible. DS has to be back at uni. On 3rd January

AnguaResurgam · 27/12/2020 08:33

How will they prevent university travelling to their term time accommodation, if it is a private let?

Presumably even if campuses closed, online learning will continue (suits some courses better than others, but for all it's better than nothing)

Crakeandoryx · 27/12/2020 08:39

The sensible thing would be to lockdown and mass vaccinate for January and February. I mean massive vaccinations in schools and drive in/community hub vaccination. Then begin to release restrictions.

RoseAndRose · 27/12/2020 08:40

I think they're giving the vaccine pretty much as fast as it can be supplied by the manufacturer

SophieB100 · 27/12/2020 08:42

From today's Observer:

"Scientists from the Independent Sage group have urged that all regions of England be placed in tier 4, meaning that non-essential shops, hairdressers, and leisure and entertainment venues must close. Devolved nations were advised to bring forward their own national lockdowns. Tier 4 should include enhanced travel restrictions, the group said, while arguing that an emergency plan be introduced to enable safe education in January and February.

This idea is supported by teaching unions, who have demanded that the government keeps schools closed as evidence has grown that the new virus variant is proving to be particularly infectious among children.

This point was backed by Paul Hunter, professor in medicine at the University of East Anglia. “If this new variant is behind the increase in this age group, then that is a big worry,” he said."

I am thinking more and more that schools will be online until Feb half term.

MrsTravers · 27/12/2020 08:49

I thought announcement was due 30th?

Am not expecting DC1 to return to secondary in January - I think testing capacity is limited where we are so can't see tests happening for a couple of weeks. It won't be good for DC1 but we're in Tier 4 and there aren't many more levers to pull (though our rates are lower than many Tier 3 areas - appreciate this may change when results of secondary tests are known!). I'd like her back in before half term, though, she really struggled last time.

I will not be happy if primaries close. I feel it's disproportionate given the impact it has on the children (and parents!).

This sounds very reasonable.

Education continuing as best we can.

Schools as open as possible.

But safely.

TheHoneyBadger · 27/12/2020 10:07

We shall see. I agree that the uncertainty is maddening.

AcornAutumn · 27/12/2020 11:09

Phil it was on my cousin's letter

We were laughing about the comparative risk of getting someone else to put the rubbish out, or letting it pile up in the flat, and the theory of...if you can smell downstairs smoking weed, does every exhalation contain Covid!

I've had a look at mine and it didn't mention it. I feel done over, I could have got out of doing the bins and recycling for a few weeks!!!
AcornAutumn · 27/12/2020 11:13

Phil lol.

My cousin lives alone, so no such benefit occurred to him.

He had a shielding letter with information and a letter from his consultant. It was that letter that really made him angry. I didn't see it but apparently the general tone was "get ready to die and please don't upset the NHS".
