To think people are deluded when they say ‘when this is all over’

Not a conspiracy theorist! At all. But this is never going to be over. It really grates on me when people say this...like there’s a day where suddenly all is ok. This is going to go on for at least another year and will be here in some way or other indefinitely. It makes me sad that people seem to really believe that their freedoms will resume at some point. Maybe many many years down the line but not soon. Not sure where the ‘when this is all over’ even came from?!

Witches okay. I didn't realise I was on your list, I'll try to remember not to reply in future.

Delatron · 26/12/2020 22:59

Why 2023? Why will this pandemic last longer than any others in history when we have a vaccine?
If you’re going to spout this shit then back it up with reasoning.

LovingCountryLife · 26/12/2020 23:01

Get a bleedin' grip and stop catastrophising Hmm

Mmn654123 · 26/12/2020 23:01

@5zeds

I think it’s because the vaccine will only protect people for a very brief time before they either need vaccinating again or become susceptible. That’s a bold statement. Why do you think that?
Because that’s what the manufacturers have said.
ElizabethG81 · 26/12/2020 23:02

Spanish flu ended, the Black Death ended, but Covid-19 won't? OK. And there were no vaccines for them, people just had to crack on.

I seriously think there are going to be a lot of disappointed people on Mumsnet when this does end.

Black Death took 9 years.

Spanish flu mutated to a less deadly strain so burned out after two years.

Spiratedaway · 26/12/2020 23:06

@Bikingbear

We can't and won't live like this forever. The vaccine is on its way, and there is a theory that keeping the schools open allowing limited spread, will result in immunity within young people. If all else fails they will eventually allow it to take out the weakest, 100 years ago there were many viruses and infections that were killers. People didn't go hiding away from them. They took their chances.
This !!!

hysteria on Mumsnet tonight...

Don't be so negative, of course it's going to be over eventually, every other plague and pandemic ended didn't it? We might not be back to 100% normal straight away but believe me, I did enjoy the summer after the first lockdown! So give me some normality like the summer period and I would take it straight away.

MaryLeeOnHigh · 26/12/2020 23:09

By April this will be old news

How? The government has estimated that only people in at risk categories will have been vaccinated by then, and they're already well behind on that programme.

And for sure we're not going to get over the economic effects by April.

Spiratedaway · 26/12/2020 23:09

@Iminaglasscaseofemotion

Whats really getting on my nerves os people who keep saying "I can't wait to see the back of 2020", as if on the firstbon January things are going to be better. 🤔 eh no, the kids are now off school for an extra 2 weeks (I'm fine with this though. Infact it should probably be longer), we are still in a teir 4 area for the next 3 weeks, so I would love to know what everyone thinks its going to be so much better in a weeks time.
I don't think people are going to expect to wake up on jan 1st and it be over ! But we have hope treatments /vaccine it will be gradual
HazeyJaneII · 26/12/2020 23:10

It will end.
However I'd like to know that vulnerable children will be able to be vaccinated at some point in the future in order for ds to be protected.

Delatron · 26/12/2020 23:10

If people aren’t dying from this disease then it ceases to be necessary to have all these restrictions.

And yes the economic effects from lockdown will be felt for many years but that’s different to not being able to see friends and family.

sotallsotall · 26/12/2020 23:11

Wow it takes a certain mins of pessimism to suggest this misery will NEVER EVER be over

AcornAutumn · 26/12/2020 23:14

GAL8 sorry for your troubles

You have posted on the wring thread, if you report your post to MN, they can move it to the right section for you. All good wishes Flowers

Spiratedaway · 26/12/2020 23:14

@Thatsnotmynamename

Fgs. Enough already. Just as much as one knows that it will 'all be over' by summer, you don't know that it will go on for many, many years. Lots of people are really struggling and who cares if they think/ hope it will be over soon and then are wrong. At least they have hope.

There is absolutely no reason not to believe that with vaccines rolled out to the most vulnerable, plus care workers, along with continuing advances in treatments, that within the next 6-12 months Covid won't get to a similar level of severity as flu, which kills numerous people every year (including children) but at a level which we are 'happy' with as a society to live as normal.

I think a more important question to ask is why you feel the need to start yet another thread to bring everyone down and spread misery at what is about to be the most depressing tine of the year anyway, when actually - you don't KNOW anything.

Well said
17days · 26/12/2020 23:21

People just mean they look forward to no more lockdowns, to being able to go about life as before. Which will all be possible once the vaccine has been widely rolled out, probably by around the end of this year.

So no, it's not anywhere near "never going to be over".

Spiratedaway · 26/12/2020 23:24

Priti Patel can shove her new normal at her rear end

ElizabethG81 · 26/12/2020 23:26

*Black Death took 9 years.

Spanish flu mutated to a less deadly strain so burned out after two years.*

Neither of those timescales are "forever" though, are they? Both still exist but the pandemic phase ended and people learned to live with it. There's no reason to believe that Covid-19 will behave any differently, unless you are prone to catastrophic thinking.

AgeLikeWine · 26/12/2020 23:28

It’s important to separate the public health situation from the economic situation.

The public health situation will improve dramatically and very quickly during the next three months. We are already vaccinating substantial numbers of the most vulnerable, and when the Oxford vaccine is approved we will be vaccinating literally millions of people every week. Lockdowns and restrictions will no longer be required because the vulnerable will be protected.

The economic situation will be very different. We are fucked, basically, and it will take literally years to rebuild the economy to anything resembling the levels of 2019. Many industries have been hit so hard that they may never recover, most obviously non-food retail.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 26/12/2020 23:32

It makes me sad that people seem to really believe that their freedoms will resume at some point.

It makes me really sad - and fucking annoyed actually - that some people just revel in misery and seem to enjoy telling everyone how bad it’s supposedly going to be (in the name of “being honest”) when they’ve got nothing other than their own miserable little opinions to go on.

dramallama7 · 26/12/2020 23:34

Are you always such a negative person?

Quartz2208 · 26/12/2020 23:35

Black death took an incredibly long time though to migrate across Europe the spread was (naturally) a lot slower. In the UK it pretty much lasted around 18 months.

This one has worldwide spread within a year

Also, this. The utter misery of some people who I'm sure would revel in this never being over, baffles me Confused
