To think people are deluded when they say ‘when this is all over’

Not a conspiracy theorist! At all. But this is never going to be over. It really grates on me when people say this...like there’s a day where suddenly all is ok. This is going to go on for at least another year and will be here in some way or other indefinitely. It makes me sad that people seem to really believe that their freedoms will resume at some point. Maybe many many years down the line but not soon. Not sure where the ‘when this is all over’ even came from?!

I am also on the vulnerable list and I can’t wait for restrictions to be lifted. If that happens to be before I’ve had the vaccine, I’ll take my chances.

DontStopThinkingAboutTomorrow · 27/12/2020 10:22

At some point, of course it will end.
Medical science will find an effective treatment, so people don't get as sick. This is already happening- lots more treatment options than there were in March.
Vaccines will protect the vulnerable.
Herd immunity will develop as more people get the vaccine or get the illness.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 27/12/2020 10:23

@katherinejaneway do you think everyone in tier 4 is though even now
Many offices are still open im only tier 3 but mine won't shut if we go to tier 4 we can't wfh as many cannot
Also people will go to others houses as they will take the risk
The vast majority will follow but the longer it goes on the less compliance you will get
Also the spring / summer weather will allow a bit more freedom as you can get outside more and eat outside etc, along side a vaccine which is being administered
Guess we must be approaching some having a second dose soon
We won't be able to be lockdown for another year people just won't manage

Oblomov20 · 27/12/2020 10:24

Not deluded. It will get better. Never go back to what it was before, but that's ok. But it has to get better than this, because this is crap! People won't put up with this for much longer. People want to see family and friends, travel, go to concerts etc.

SweetGrapes · 27/12/2020 10:25

Of course it will be over one day.

You and I may not be around but this is no Armageddon. The Spanish flu went away without any vaccines.

Normal life was lived around all the outbreaks of infectious diseases throughout history

DeciduousPerennial · 27/12/2020 10:29

Wind ‘em up and watch ‘em go. Post-Boxing Day boredom, OP? 🙄

Perhaps if you use an even bigger spoon next time, you’ll get an even bigger reaction when you stir the shit pot.

KatherineJaneway · 27/12/2020 10:29

@donewithitalltodayandxmas

I don't think everyone is following the rules and yes, some workplaces are open as they have to be. My point was that the pp said she would not follow the rules, my point was for a lot of things you have to in Tier 4 as you cannot do them voluntarily i.e. go to the pub, eat out in a restaurant etc.

notagoodyear · 27/12/2020 10:30

The holiday companies and airlines obviously think it is almost all over.

Ad this morning on TV: "Jab and Go" by Ryanair I think!!!

Another holiday company (something with Beach in the name), basically said life is about to get back to normal so you should book your holiday (without actually mentioning the vaccine).

notagoodyear · 27/12/2020 10:31

TBH 'Jab and Go' seemed a bit optimistic to me since the people they were showing in the ad were young and thin. Those people are unlikely to get the vaccine any time soon, unless of course you can buy it before going on holiday, which is kind of what jab and go implies to me. Maybe I should book a flight with Ryanair and they might vaccinate me.

Completely agree with you. What a daft post.
GoldenOmber · 27/12/2020 10:38

It will always be open to people to avoid crowds and indoor gatherings and it mix households and wear a mask, if they want to. I suspect some people will feel safer like that for a couple of years to come.

But the rest of us will be getting back to normal. Sorry.

Scottishgirl85 · 27/12/2020 10:39

Oh don't be ridiculous. I think some people on here thrive on misery. Of course it will end. And not too long from now. The vaccine will help and we'll get to the point where the NHS won't be at risk of being overwhelmed, and then it becomes individual choice as to the risks you take, just like anything else in life.

Buttercream22 · 27/12/2020 10:51

Of course there will be an end!
I think we're in for a rough ride in January, February and March. However, I'm optimistic that I will be able to see my family again come the spring. I have no idea when they will allow big events such as, converts, weddings, festivals etc. But eventually restrictions will ease!!

Footle · 27/12/2020 11:34

@Lannaaa ffs. "Never-ending... a year at least". We've had enough of this sort of rhetoric.

AcornAutumn · 27/12/2020 11:34

@KatherineJaneway

The majority of people won't follow these rules for much longer- God knows I wouldn't live like this for another year.

But we have to Confused I'm in Tier 4, I can't go to my office, I can't go to the gym, I can't eat out, I won't see family as they need protecting from the virus etc. Life cannot go anywhere near back to normal with all these restrictions in place.

Yes, people saying they will return to normal after the jab

How?! Nothing is open! You can't open your business without immense financial penalty, like £10,000+.

I'm concerned to hear people thinking they "should" be allowed to get the jab earlier or keep shielding etc.

I've got a neighbour who really should have fired one of his workers ages ago, thinks he has a right to hide indoors and be paid for not going to go work because he is scared.

I didn’t realise Mystic Meg posted on Mumsnet.

I imagine that things will, well, be allowed to open again Confused

Miamarshmallows · 27/12/2020 13:02

It's ridiculous to say this will last for much longer. It is nearly over.

I think from March/April things will be pretty much back to normal. As I said before, no social distancing, shops and workplaces open etc. In the summer more wide spread, large scale events will come back as well as holidays.

I think furlough till end April is pretty telling

Hasn't Germany made it two years from the start?

AcornAutumn · 27/12/2020 13:26

Also, to me, "normal" means walk into a pub or gallery without leaving contact info.

Gwenhwyfar · 27/12/2020 13:29

@AcornAutumn

Also, to me, "normal" means walk into a pub or gallery without leaving contact info.
To me it means no restrictions on the group in the pub, being able to invite people to my home with no number restriction. I've returned to live somewhere I used to live and at the moment I can't make new friends at all and I can't get to know new colleagues so even the situation we had in September with no lockdown is still very sad.

I'm really not bothered about things like mass gatherings like big gigs and sports matches.

AcornAutumn · 27/12/2020 13:35

Gwen oh yes, that too!

Im just puzzled by some of the definitions of normal. To me it's 2019.

countrygirl99 · 27/12/2020 13:51

People used to die of all sorts of infectious stuff - smallpox, diphtheria, cholera, tuberculosis. Pregnancy was a major killer. But, you know what, people got on with life. They had festivals and weddings, they went to market in towns strewn with shit, animal and human, they still got pregnant. What makes you think we are such wimps that we won't get back to this?
