I’m the papers today. This looks grim for Spring, so much uncertainty around schools with these new strains.

I need to believe the vaccines will be our saviour.

Is it marked in children because the bee strain is more contagious and they don’t social distance at school?

New

ofwarren · 26/12/2020 19:29

What paper is that in?

ChristmasinJune · 26/12/2020 19:31

Which news source is reporting this op? Worrying if true (and a depressingly long time until the predicted peak) but the tiny snippet you've shared does little to convince me so I'll hold off on any more stressing until I know more.

Lumene · 26/12/2020 19:32

Is it from the sun?

Swissrollypoly · 26/12/2020 19:32

Summer?! Surely the virus isn’t as virulent in the summer?

EagleFlight · 26/12/2020 19:34

It’s been very virulent in much warmer countries during their summers.

"But [Wendy] Barclay, who also sits on NERVTAG, said, “Let’s be clear. We’re not saying that this is a virus that specifically attacks children or is any more specific in its ability to infect children. But we know that SARS-CoV-2, as it emerged, was not as efficient at infecting children as it was adults. There are many hypotheses [as to why], but one is the expression of the ACE2 receptor that could be different in children. So if the [new variant] virus is having an easier time of finding and entering the cells, then that would put children on a more level playing field, if you like.”

That article mentions ‘most’ schools going back on the 11th, but all primary schools are back on the 4th, unless I’ve missed an announcement.

DfEisashambles · 26/12/2020 19:43

It’s from the Daily Fail but the article is quoting a study from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine for one of the strains which is 56% more transmissible. This particular strain doesn’t appear cause a more severe illness so far but the South African strain affects young people more seriously than the original strain.

Also, the SA strain has been

In view of these studies taking place and the evidence they’re seeing the Gov’t needs to start communicating with the public on what they’re planning to do about it.

Clearly all lies as schools are covid safe, children are unaffected and anyone saying otherwise really just wants all child to die of isolation and sadness. Why are we permanently sacrificing the eduction of a generation of youth, in order to save old people?! They wont stop their lives and stay in the house for a year or two while the rest of us get on with living! And no masks and social distancing and covid measures in schools are NOT the answer as my child is doesn't like to sit still and wear a Mask! He wont like to see his teacher wear a mask either, selfish, lazy cow. Teachers should just quit if they are vulnerable! Wont somebody of the children!

Do i win bingo?

You didn’t mention Denmark, or Australia-or any other countries that didn’t close schools Grin.

Plus, teachers should just ‘do their bit’ and make sure the children social distance-they just need to move the desks a bit and use their teacher stares. If they had a ‘can do’ attitude, they could make it work.

SoscaredforJan · 26/12/2020 19:47

Good luck waiting for that. They seem determined to keep schools open regardless. They need to find Gavin Williamson first which is a task in itself!

DfEisashambles · 26/12/2020 19:47

@Redlocks28 no announcements yet but hopefully there will be as parents we do not know what we’re facing in January due to ever increasing evidence of the effects in children.

OP posts:
KnowingMeKnowingYule · 26/12/2020 19:49

@HollyGenneroMcClane that did make me laugh.

It's obvious what should happen. Schools should close entirely. They won't. So what may happen is in secondary yr 11 and 13 go in on a rota or full time (rota would be better but hey it's the DfE), all other year groups online. Primaries should also close but they won't because childcare, hopefully they will go to rotas then.

The DfE/Gav will probably fiddle the stats somehow and all back in as soon as possible. Sad

BlueBlancmange · 26/12/2020 19:50

I'd like to see their reason for why they expect cases and deaths to peak in summer when the vaccination programme should be well underway by then.

DfEisashambles · 26/12/2020 19:51

Wouldn’t put it past the Gov’t, Gav and DfE fudging stats or deliberately omitting info on schools as has been the case, pushing the agenda in the media.

Having said this, vaccines are not going to help children at present I know.
SOmuchsparkle · 26/12/2020 19:56

I wish they would just tell us what they are planning re: schools. I hate all the speculation it's so stressful. FFS Just bloody tell us already!!

Swissrollypoly · 26/12/2020 19:56

@BlueBlancmange I agree, I thought the aim was the vaccine programme.

Therarestone · 26/12/2020 19:57

So schools close. What happens to the kids educations. Honest question. How do they catch up on the time they miss.

From experience online learning is no substitute, so what do we do. Hold everyone back a year? I genuinely believe 4 is too young to start school any way...

SaltyAF · 26/12/2020 19:58

Having said this, vaccines are not going to help children at present I know.

Nor school staff.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 26/12/2020 20:00

The summer peak also interests me. Something else I read suggested the peak for the south east should be late January based on the timings of Tier 4 starting - so even the peak of spring doesn't fit. And by late spring they are planning for the vast majority of the old and vulnerable to be vaccinated so why we'd then have a northern peak beyond that (bar a very small one given not everyone will have the vaccination), I don't really understand.

It just goes to show how much different experts think/say wildly different things.
