Anyone despair a bit at folk still going on holiday

I think it’s just adding to the problem. I’m not jealous at all as I hate flying. I feel really sorry for those working in hospitals when some people are still going abroad and potentially taking the virus there or bringing it back.

No. Probably safer on a plane than it is going into a school.

Lostinacloud · 25/12/2020 23:42

Nope. It’s a virus, it’s everywhere and not everyone you ever come across is infected. Plus the fact most countries ask for a negative test before entry anyway.

DontStopThinkingAboutTomorrow · 25/12/2020 23:50

I thought most places had banned flights from the UK now? Who is flying where?

I think people are a bit daft if they go abroad right now, and if they get stranded they should be on their own. But I don't despair over it.

SebastianTheCrab · 25/12/2020 23:56

I am. So many kids from my DS'd nursery are on holiday and I think it's irresponsible. I'm not jealous as we too could go if we wanted but I just don't think it's safe.

trulydelicious · 26/12/2020 00:22

Yes, this nightmare will not end until people start to take it seriously and act responsibly

giggly · 26/12/2020 00:38

Scottish Government have asked for essential air travel only and you can’t travel through tiers to get to the airports.
I live over a flight path and hear a few plans a week now its very strange.
Absolutely no need for overseas holidays during this time

Bouledeneige · 26/12/2020 00:47

I don't think I'd risk it. Life just has to b e a bit small for a while.

WineNotTheLabel · 26/12/2020 00:52

Travelling on a plan seems like an odd thing to do during a pandemic. I've I followed loads of people on IG posting holiday pics In Dubai.

I've cancelled two holidays this year and may cancel one in Oct 21 (nothing booked yet).

BeesAnkles · 26/12/2020 01:04

The virus is in practically every country in the world so surely the risk of "bringing it back" is the same if you go abroad as if you go to your local supermarket 🤷🏽‍♀️ I could only understand that argument if we had completely eradicated it in the UK. Plus, people get tested before flying home.

If the concern is being on a well-ventilated aeroplane while wearing a mask, surely the risk of transmission is just as high travelling by public transport in your own country, or am I missing something?

Isolatedizzy · 26/12/2020 01:29

It is in every Country but only this week the Govt announced a second mutated strain from South Africa and over the summer a different strain from Spain arrived in the UK.
Honestly there is no-one on the planet who wants to sit on a beach for a fortnight more than I do but I think it's just sensible not to at the moment!

stuffedforchristmas · 26/12/2020 01:46

or am I missing something?

Several things. We don't want mutations dancing over the globe.

Even if you were just as likely to catch it at the shop, it would be very helpful for a great many people if we would all not go on holiday or to the shop unless we need to.

This is now a race against time. We're not going to contain it. Lockdowns may not work very well at all now. We're left trying to vaccinate faster than the virus spreads. Bringing home exotic mutations that locals may not have immunity to is just unconstructive.

Added to that, sick UK citizens in some sunny countries will expect better care than the residents, putting pressure on resources and likely demanding help from busy governments. They will also be more likely to stay in complexes where there is more sharing - ventilation, leisure facilities, eating out etc than they would in their own home.

Rainysun188 · 26/12/2020 02:20

Stuffedforchristmas- totally agree, good points.

It does feel all wrong I must say

aidelmaidel · 26/12/2020 03:01

Looking at my local paper just now. Adjacent headlines--hospitals will be overrun by Jan 12; nursing staff concerned by compulsory extended hours and lack of N95 masks; long lines at the airport for travel. In-country travel, I expect, most of it, but for fuck SAKE people. Stay home.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/12/2020 03:03

As I said on another thread, it's a bit cunty.

But then some people are.

BonnieDundee · 26/12/2020 07:31

If its allowed people will do it. I'm not but people will if its allowed. And yes. I'm jealous Sad

itispersonal · 26/12/2020 07:34

How many will isolate on their return though!

I was shocked to see one of cousins away for Christmas, especially when they moaned last time about having to isolate for 2 weeks on their return!

SnuggyBuggy · 26/12/2020 07:37

I don't get why I can't go and visit even a small group of friends and family and yet people can sit next to each other for long flights.

Graciebobcat · 26/12/2020 07:41

I was talking to someone who was off to Gran Canaria just before Christmas from Tier 4. I wonder if they made it. Each to their own but it does feel a bit off at the moment.

Pluckedpencil · 26/12/2020 07:58

Going on a plane is no different than going to Asda or Tesco really. Mix of people in an enclosed space. Actually, it's safer, as you have to have a negative test now to go on a plane.
Most of Europe have similar levels to us, so I don't think it is that selfish really. J judge people more.whk go.around to each others houses in big numbers!!

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 26/12/2020 08:18

@trulydelicious

Yes, this nightmare will not end until people start to take it seriously and act responsibly
Exactly. Just because some things can be done doesn’t mean they should.

Clearly the stay at home message isn’t getting though to all.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 26/12/2020 08:31

I can't understand the mentality of people who would go on holiday, and enjoy it, in this current situation. Theyd be the first on sky news doing sad faces and moaning on about 'there's been no notice! what's the government going to do!' if they got stranded.

Mind there are so many carrying on as normal mixing several households and staying overnight I shouldn't be surprised.

starfish4 · 26/12/2020 08:32

Totally understand why people want to plan a holiday, but with so many uncertainties we won't be booking one, especially abroad. Will have to book my time off in next couple of weeks, for the next year. However, we'll do the same as this year, ie if we've got time booked off and not locked down, look at going somewhere for a few days with a similar risk, now same tier.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 26/12/2020 08:34

'Going on a plane is no different than going to Asda or Tesco really. Mix of people in an enclosed space. '

You must be joking. Sat next to, in front of, or behind someone for at least 2 hours is indeed much more different to briefly walking past someone 2m away in the freezer aisle at Tescos.

IcyApril · 26/12/2020 08:40

We went on holiday about a month ago to somewhere with a lower infection rate than the U.K. We had a PCR test before going and the place we went too was stricter on things like mask wearing and social distancing than we are here. It felt very safe.

I weighed up the risk to decide if I felt it was sensible to go. There are other things, like travelling to Cornwall in the summer time, that we cancelled this year as we deemed the risk to be too great.

I wouldn’t travel now because we went into Tier 4 at midnight.

The only criticism I have of the whole process was that we didn’t require a negative PCR test to get back into the UK. IMO this should be required, at the travellers expense.
