I think it’s just adding to the problem. I’m not jealous at all as I hate flying. I feel really sorry for those working in hospitals when some people are still going abroad and potentially taking the virus there or bringing it back.

Completely agree it’s wrong to go abroad in holiday during pandemic. Anyone who says it is safer is deluding themselves

Think back to the summer months abd the travel bridges. How long did they last?

Yes, I too know someone in the Maldives right now. Yes, they had to have a negative covid test before flying, 72 hours before flying, but were out and about in London tier 4 before catching their flight and after taking the test. The test only shows that 72 hours before, they didn’t have the virus. So not safe at all.

BBCONEANDTWO · 26/12/2020 18:21

oh imagine being in the Maldives that would be ace - I am a tad jealous.

notimagain · 26/12/2020 18:24

Sounds like a significant problem here isn't so much people going on holiday, it's that some people are ignoring the domestic Tier 4 "guidance".........

Not so nice for the Madivians you infect though. Going to low infection places is cunty too.
Whatisthepoint10 · 26/12/2020 18:57

@DobbyTheHouseElk
People just continue with their plans and fly internationally from the Tier 4. How come the illegal acts like this are performed that easily? I despair

Compliance with the recommendations/guidance/law, in the UK whatever it is today has been a problem throughout most of this pandemic, and not just with regard to air travel....

It appears despite what is published HMG won't take monitoring or enforcement measures seriously.....might be a vote loser I guess??

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/12/2020 20:23

I was a bit shocked really. They told their parents it was too risky to see them flew off to the Maldives.

I’ve been to the Maldives a few times, i think it’s incredibly selfish. The Maldivian people don’t need Covid to be brought in, they only have a hospital on Male. Which is a long boat ride from their local islands. Could be a 2 hr boat ride. I was really disappointed in the behaviour of this person I know.

I completely agree with you, but honestly, it's on the Maldives to ban entry from the UK. Obviously UK citizens aren't going to stop flying out to where they want to, and equally the Maldives don't seem to have a problem with it- or they would have banned incoming flights or refused entry.

Cantspeakpublic · 26/12/2020 21:33

I don’t understand holidays in the U.K. either, going from tier 3 midlands to Devon tier 2 over Xmas. I think that’s selfish too..

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/12/2020 22:06

Meant to quote, not post!

It might be on the government to make the rules but surely people are passingly aware of ethical tourism, which includes not infecting your neighbours with deadly diseases.

You'd think the British would have learned from hundreds of years of history of doing exactly that!

fucksanta1 · 26/12/2020 22:08

Friend recently returned from three weeks in the Maldives absolutely crazy.
Worst thing is he works in a care home and went straight back to work

av3nturin3 · 26/12/2020 22:46

We’ve got two lots of visitors in Dubai now: the “migratory birds” who, pre-pandemic, traveled from “up north” in November to escape the snow until March, usually staying with relatives who work/ live in Dubai, and tourists from Germany/ UK/ India. Not gonna mention the idiots (who live here) hosting parties/ bbqs at their homes. Personally, I’m not making contact with friends who are hosting UK visitors, nor am I going out to the public areas frequented by tourists (even if that means missing out on many sale bargains), nor am I attending the neighbors’ parties. I’m wary that several teachers from kids’ school are back home in the UK and that many of my kids’ friends have traveled within the region (max 3 hr flight) to visit elderly relatives. Dubai Health Authority and the ministry that regulates private schools have issued strongly worded warnings that Dubai residents who traveled during winter break must self-quarantine for two weeks prior to returning to school, else face consequences.

Meanwhile I’m missing Chamonix!

Ylvamoon · 26/12/2020 22:56

It was international travel that helped the virus spread so fast.
Some people never learn.

Yes, people shouldn't be going abroad, I completely agree. However as long as it's allowed, people will do it! So other countries need to protect themselves from our stupidity.
daisypond · 27/12/2020 10:13

There was a thread recently by a poster off to the Maldives. Most people seemed to support her and accuse anyone saying it wasn’t a good idea of being jealous.

rookiemere · 27/12/2020 10:23

My "stay the F at home "FB friend is posting daily updates from his Canaries trip. It's so tone deaf. I would snooze him, but I'm interested to see what happens next.

Willyoujustbequiet · 27/12/2020 10:25

They are incredibly selfish idiots. And that's the polite description.

I genuinely believe anyone going on holiday st the moment must have a low IQ.

HeronLanyon · 27/12/2020 10:26

My head goes all funny when I read about people going abroad for a holiday at the moment (and fir the last couple of months. Part of it thinks good for them if they e somehow found a way of doing it safely. Most of it thinks I’m in a parallel universe masked and being careful and families not able to see loved ones (some deny themselves when actually regs allow care for vulnerable and mental health etc). Mostly I feel the latter. Just seems bizarre.

User158340 · 27/12/2020 10:35

One thing i've never understood is all the lockdowns and restrictions every country near enough has been subjected to for nearly a year now, yet most countries have kept their borders open throughout.

notagoodyear · 27/12/2020 10:39

It is the movement of new variants around the world that is the problem.

By going on holiday, you risk bringing a new variant not currently in the UK back home with you. That variant might be worse than the ones we are currently breeding ourselves.

Plus of course you are not allowed to travel into or out of Tier 4. But everyone I know who went on holiday this Christmas travelled from Tier 1/2/3 into Tier 4 to catch their flight. And will travel back out of Tier 4 to return home, which is only going to accelerate the spread of the new variant around the UK also.

notagoodyear · 27/12/2020 10:40

Ultimately the responsibility lies with the government though.

While they continue to allow people to travel to the airports in Tier 4, allow people to travel around the world and back again, allow the rich not to quarantine on return to the UK if they travel in business/first class, do not enforce quarantine on anyone at all, personal responsibility is irrelevant.

It is the government who are failing us in this respect. Just look at all the other countries with more responsible governments and their better rates/outcomes in the pandemic.

But Boris doesn't want to upset anyone.
BluebellsGreenbells · 27/12/2020 10:59

I’ll take that a sort further.

Boris wants other countries to do his job and ban people from the UK. So he doesn’t look like the bad dad for spoiling the fun.

chocolatemonster · 27/12/2020 11:37

Yes it's allowed if you live in Tier 1, 2 and 3. It's not allowed if you are in Tier 4 with or without a test but people are still going because there are no checks.

Imagine if the virus is transmitted to some of the hospitality workers who probably won't even get paid if they can't work.
