Anyone else tested today?

Started with a slight cough and tight chest yesterday, went for a test today. Apparently the numbers of tests have doubled in the last couple of days at my testing site. So I may not hear until Boxing Day. I’m a teacher and though I had made it through unscathed. Bloody typical timing. I’m hiding out in the bedroom. We have two young DC, so may not get to do our usual Christmas Eve things. I can’t even think about not creeping downstairs on Christmas morning with them, the looks on their faces. I’m trying really really hard not to have a meltdown right now. Thinking optimistically, that I may get the result in time to have Christmas with them. Anyone else in the same position?

Yes went for a rest this morning. The test centre was empty so I'm hopeful 🤞

ChristmasinJune · 23/12/2020 17:44

I honestly don't think you need to be isolating from your young children on Christmas Day? That's a step too far isn't it? Just be sensible, good hygiene, good ventilation and stay in the house or garden as a family until the test comes back.
I'm mildly asthmatic and so have had several false alarms where I waited for a test. Had to cancel ds' birthday party in one occasion. But as a single mum I just kept things normal within the house. Good luck with the test anyway. I tested (asymptomatic testing) yesterday (negative).

mnahmnah · 23/12/2020 17:54

I thought of you had symptoms you were to completely isolate? DH has tested several times (all negative) and has always hidden away in the bedroom in fear of passing it to us. If I’m positive, DH is asthmatic too and the less time he has to isolate the better because of he doesn’t work he doesn’t get paid.

@lovelemoncurd

My test site was empty too. Drove straight through. But the guy said that numbers had doubled in the last couple of days

I mean I can see the logic, if it's doable. It just seems a bit much to be missing Christmas Day that's all. Have you talked things through properly with your dh? Does he definitely want you to do that?

I suppose if it's just the four of you for Christmas anyway, you could hold back half the presents and do a festive treasure hunt or something when you've got your hopefully negative results.

mnahmnah · 23/12/2020 18:17

@ChristmasinJune

Yes DH definitely wants me to keep my distance now. Haven’t discussed Christmas Eve and morning as he is assuming we will have the results by then! Pretty sure he’d be ok with me going downstairs for all that stuff though. Just haven’t had chance to talk properly. Hey got his hands full with our very excited DC right now

The only positive part is sat listening to DH trying to get the DC ready for bed - he’s usually at work so doesn’t do it often Grin

OP, I'm a single parent and it's just not feasible to isolate from them. I'm a teacher too and waiting for my result (tested yesterday). I have a sore scratchy throat, ear ache, sneezing and coughing. But I would class all those as being mild. I've had much much worse colds. I'm hoping this is a cold too as keeping the DCs over Xmas for 10 days without them seeing their dad is going to be unbearable for me.

BergamotMouse · 23/12/2020 19:06

I had a test at 10am on 22nd and got my (negative) result 14 hours later so hopefully you'll be ok.

mnahmnah · 23/12/2020 19:06

@user1471530109

The DC are already excited about Christmas. Being cooped up all day tomorrow and possible Christmas Day too is not going to be fun!! They’re energetic kids who need to be outdoors.

DH got tested last week and it was negative. Full of cold basically, with a cough. I have a bit of a runny nose, tight chest and occasional minor cough. So I’m hoping I have a minor version of his cold. He always gets these things worse than me. And I always seem to get a cough and cold at Christmas. But I’m the current circumstances I had to get a test. Just such rubbish timing!!

@BergamotMouse

That quick would be amazing! But the guy at the test air said earlier in the week it was 24 hours, but numbers have doubled since yesterday. So I’m not holding out hope!

I had a test last week (teacher) and got result back after 52 hours. Got covid from a pupil who tested positive :/

mnahmnah · 23/12/2020 19:35

@Kitkat05

Nightmare! We did really well as a school. Then three students in the last week or so came in knowing they had symptoms. Two of them had a day off and came back in. Their siblings still came in. Craziness. Now lots of staff are isolating over Christmas and some, like me, may well have caught it.

Kitkat05 · 23/12/2020 19:48

@mnahmnah I hope you haven’t! I had the symptoms :( was quiet ill last week.

I want schools to be kept open but I’m reallu worried about getting it again. I have a 13 month old and it has been very scary.

tootyfruitypickle · 23/12/2020 19:59

I sent a home test Tuesday and no result yet. I’m a single parent with a teenager and haven’t isolated at all, it’s just not practical or possible at all, I’m coughing and spluttering all over the place unfortunately. Pretty sure it’s not covid!

tootyfruitypickle · 23/12/2020 20:00

Tested Monday actually .

Mindymomo · 23/12/2020 20:30

@tootyfruitypickle. How will you feel if it comes back positive and you could have infected others who could be vulnerable, due to not self isolating.

HailFairy · 23/12/2020 20:38

DH tested today. Almost certain it’s an end of term cold but felt might as well test. Hoping for results back ASAP so we can get outside but he’s not isolating from us at home...we’re all low risk so likely to be completely fine and it’s all crap enough without him being stuck in our bedroom.

BathshebaWasOnTheRoof · 23/12/2020 20:42

Mindy, it reads to me that tootyfruitypickle wasn’t isolating from her teenager not that she’s out of the house.

Bluewavescrashing · 23/12/2020 20:44

I'm a teacher and also got tested today. I feel your pain.

I've been semi isolating at home if you like. Obviously not going out anywhere but limiting my time spent with other family members in my household. Using the ensuite as my own bathroom and not sharing towels, cups etc. However I did sit in the lounge with DCs for a short while today and I'll spend time with them tomorrow and on Christmas day.

Don't despair - they won't necessarily get it if you test positive. My colleague's husband had a serious case of covid and despite no mitigation at all at home nobody else got it. She was very matter of fact and had accepted that she'd get it, and their children too so they continued to share a bed etc but they were all fine.

Fingers crossed your result is negative and arrives soon.

tootyfruitypickle · 23/12/2020 20:48

No I’ve not left the house for a fortnight Grin. Luckily didn’t leave for a week before I got symptoms either as work was bananas.

I just meant I can’t isolate from dd as it’s just us and in practice it’s not possible for what is very likely a cold.

Desperate to go for a walk now I’m feeling better but waiting for that negative result before I do.

tootyfruitypickle · 23/12/2020 20:49

Sorry i wrote my previous post badly !! Am definitely isolating inside the house !!

MiniMaxi · 23/12/2020 20:51

Could you wear a mask for Xmas day gift opening? Wash hands, change into fresh clothes, and they should be pretty safe.

ejaudhekusjwksnsh · 23/12/2020 20:53

We tested Monday night at 7pm and had results back by 8am the next morning. Fasted we've ever had them back. Hopefully yours will be back quickly.

MiniMaxi · 23/12/2020 20:53

PS sent off a postal test yesterday (no main symptoms but invited by the ZOE app) and hoping for a negative obviously. No idea how long the results will take at the moment tbh.

I tried to book a drive through - on 22nd there were loads of appointments available (N London), by 23rd after the tier 4 announcement the nearest was 75 miles away! The cynic in me is assuming everyone suddenly booked tests so if neg they could break the rules without feeling so guilty...
