Getting a bit impatient. I didn't get my hopes too high to start with but every time I speak to someone with a relative over 80 they have had it. He and DM (only 75 but vulnerable due to a stroke at the beginning of the year) have seen my DC, their only GC, once since last Christmas. I thought I was being reasonable hoping they would be protected by early February but I'm now wondering whether they will.

Anyone else out there waiting and wondering? Is there a shortage in some areas? They are in Greater Manchester, ironically under the cosh lockdown wise for much of the year and now seemingly in short supply of the vaccine! I know we have to be patient but we've been patient for so long.

Just venting really, I know no-one has the answer.

My 98 year old nan hasn't had it yet. She's in greater London, will need transporting, and her nearest vaccination centre is 10 miles away, so I'm guessing that's why. We're going to ring her GP tomorrow to find out what's going on.

Lougle · 22/12/2020 23:15

There are 1.6 million people age 85+ and 3.2 million age 80+, so it's likely that they are just in the queue.

Ouch44 · 22/12/2020 23:18

I know in my part of GM that the local surgery has only done about 1/4 of the over 80s.

DH is frontline NHS in another part of Manchester and his colleagues who are vulnerable are getting vaccinated at the mo.

I'm sure you're parents will get theirs soon. I was talking to a friend who was involved and it's a logistical nightmare. They are vaccinating 8-8. I really worry about my Mum too she has underlying problems and lives in the South East where the rate looks to be heading up

eastegg · 22/12/2020 23:18

Sorry to hear that whats. I hope you find something out from the GP. We are told not to phone aren't we but I've spoken to people whose elderly relatives have been proactive and they've had the vaccine. My parents are the opposite of sharp-elbowed.

My parents are in their 80s, with stroke and heart failure between them, and have heard nothing.

I too am wondering whether, like so many things, it’s a bit of a postcode lottery.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 22/12/2020 23:20

Nothing yet for 101 year old great grannie either.

ethelredonagoodday · 22/12/2020 23:20

My grandparents are in their 90s and haven't had the call yet. We are in North Yorks.

inchoccyheaven · 22/12/2020 23:21

At our surgery We have over 1000 80+ yr olds that would qualify for the vaccine but only enough for 300 to be given it at the moment. Every one that wants it and is able to have it will be called but until we have more vaccine there isn't anything we can do.
We have had couples ringing asking why only one of them has been called in but it's just the way it is unfortunately.

DramaAlpaca · 22/12/2020 23:21

My parents are in their mid-80s and don't think it's available in their area yet.

DamsonInGin · 22/12/2020 23:24

My DM is 81 and we went last week. She had an email from the surgerywith an appointment as she was speaking to them about something else and they offered an appointment but also an automatic text message. Is she wasn't tech savvy (or living with me who is) I'm really not sure how they would have done it.

I'm monitoring my DFs phone and email now as he's in his 70s and next tranche of vaccines

Phone his GP

SpookyHalloween · 22/12/2020 23:24

I work at a doctors surgery. In our area they have sent a text out for patients to click and book their appointment.
This brings up two issues:
Not a lot of people 80+ have a mobile phone.
Those who do, don't tend to have a smartphone and therefore can't click on the link

Alwaysfrank · 22/12/2020 23:25

@inchoccyheaven
Can I ask, are your surgery doing it in age order, oldest first?

My 93 year old relative is also waiting, also in Greater Manchester

I know two people who've been told to stay by their phones ready to go for the vaccine. Both got told last Friday to come Monday. Both got texts Monday morning to say don't come as the supply has not been delivered.

My mother's GP had 56 slots and my mother said "well I need to check with my daughter..." Lost her slot. I've been training her to say YES and we'll sort out who's taking her later.

Good luck

planningaheadtoday · 22/12/2020 23:30

My great aunt is 80 and has a covid vaccine date for 30th January.

TeenageMutantNinjaCovid · 22/12/2020 23:30

Everyone I know has been done when on a routine outpatient appointment or because they are due a hospital stay

They have just started routine here today, I met a lady dog walking and she and all her friends had appointments.

An awful lot of NHS staff seem to have been done (and not those working in ITU or a&E)

teenagetantrums · 22/12/2020 23:30

I had mine last week at our local hospital. They are fitting in care staff around the over 80s. Apparently alot of them don't turn up so they have to use defrosted vaccine. I wonder how they are contacting the over 80s. Post is crap atm..l can't imagine many reading emails or texts.

Spacie · 22/12/2020 23:38

My local GP surgeries both have notices on their websites saying they are expecting routine appointments to start on 30th December. And when she found out the location my mum was delighted because she can walk there, although I'm fully expecting a call to get her when she's done.

Newjobnewslob · 22/12/2020 23:40

My 91 Yr old gran with COPD is in a care home, no clue from them. We're in Southampton.
Not much point calling her GP as I don't think we'd be allowed to take her, just got to wait for the home to get their act together.

I think I'll call and ask what the hell they're playing at latest is tomorrow

LilyPond2 · 22/12/2020 23:44

My parents who are in their mid-eighties have heard nothing yet. Nor has MIL who is in her nineties.

HeddaGarbled · 22/12/2020 23:45

My mum’s GP surgery says they’re not doing them so presumably she’ll be done at a ‘hub’, whatever that means. Nothing in the local press or social media so I’m not holding my breath.

Catsup · 22/12/2020 23:48

DM has been offered it but when they said she'd have to go to a clinic quite far out she said it'd be difficult for her. They then said they'd mark her down as a refusal 😒. She did speak up to say it wasn't a 'No' just a travel issue. As far as I'm aware she's still on the list for when it's rolled out nearer to her home.

Flyingin · 22/12/2020 23:49

My 80 plus relative was told the surgery had run out.

blue25 · 22/12/2020 23:53

My 92 yr old Dad has had his first jab. 83 yr old Mum not heard anything yet.
