Getting a bit impatient. I didn't get my hopes too high to start with but every time I speak to someone with a relative over 80 they have had it. He and DM (only 75 but vulnerable due to a stroke at the beginning of the year) have seen my DC, their only GC, once since last Christmas. I thought I was being reasonable hoping they would be protected by early February but I'm now wondering whether they will.

Anyone else out there waiting and wondering? Is there a shortage in some areas? They are in Greater Manchester, ironically under the cosh lockdown wise for much of the year and now seemingly in short supply of the vaccine! I know we have to be patient but we've been patient for so long.

Just venting really, I know no-one has the answer.

There are 975 doses per box. Boxes cant be seperated. So some people will have to travel. Small gp surgeries with say 100 over 80s won't get any. They will have to join together with other gps in the same ccg until they reach the magic number. They will all be done together in one centre. Those vials then have to be used quickly and once mixed (each vial is mixed in proportion with sodium chloride on site) even quicker still. Each vial says it does 5 doses, but in reality does 6. Obvs for every elderly person who doesn't turn up, a random (but ideally a health care worker) can be done . Better that than bin them

LimitIsUp · 24/12/2020 10:51

My 90 year old father has been done, but not my 85 year old mother who is in a Nursing home

oneglassandpuzzled · 24/12/2020 11:23

Surgeries are begging people not to do call. Our surgery is finding it hard to speak to emergency call patients because people are ringing about vaccines.

Inkpaperstars · 24/12/2020 12:22

Thanks Mousehole

littlepieces · 24/12/2020 12:44

I believe they're only supplying centres that have storage facilities to keep the vaccine at -70C? Sounds like people in those areas have been luckier.
I have three grandparents, and then there's my partner's grandmother, all 85+, none of them have heard anything about it yet. Nobody elderly they/we know in their areas have received the vaccine yet either (Essex, Hertfordshire and West Sussex).

One grandad is in a care home and the staff have had no communication about vaccines for themselves or residents at all yet.

janetmendoza · 24/12/2020 14:14

Quite a few have been done in South essex Basildon/Southend areas

PuzzledObserver · 24/12/2020 18:00

My surgery’s website said the rollout was starting on 15th December (it did - I know several over 80’s who have been already, they were contacted by phone to make appointments) and it was intended that all over 50’s would be vaccinated within a 16 week period.

Not clear if that is both jabs, though, but even if it was only the first, that would mean all over 50’s done by the end of April. They are using a local golf club to do them. Very efficient, apparently, and people with mobility issues are done in their cars. The 15 minute wait involves staying put until the car in front moves off - sounds like a sort of wagon train.

My husband (care home worker) has an appointment at the local hospital hub for next week, and the 2nd jab at the exact same time 4 weeks later.

daisypond · 24/12/2020 19:10

My mum - late 80s - was at her GP yesterday and asked while she was there. She was told the appointments would be issued by letter. She doesn’t does not know anyone who has been offered it yet.

Didiplanthis · 24/12/2020 21:31

We have to.be part of a hub as we are a small rural surgery and are not allowed the vaccine as an individual surgery as they come in batches of 900. However our hub hasn't been allocated any yet and when we do it won't be enough for all the surgeries in it - and there is nothing we can do about it ! As soon as the Oxford one is available we can have it in surgery and crack on properly !

pearpickingporky84 · 24/12/2020 21:55

@ProudAuntie76 That’s really interesting, NI has taken the opposite approach and started with care home residents and staff with teams going from home to home. More than half of care home residents here have had a dose already. Outside of care homes only HCWs have been vaccinated (and only a small percentage of them). GPs here have been told they won’t be doing the other over 80s until they get the Oxford vaccine!

Windyone · 24/12/2020 22:07

I’m in Edinburgh and my 87 year old Dad has been told vaccinations won’t start until February. It will be the Astra Zeneca so let’s hope it’s approved otherwise 🤷🏻‍♀️

MadisonAvenue · 24/12/2020 22:16

My 87 year old Dad had a text almost two weeks ago from his GP’s surgery asking if he wanted a vaccine and to reply ASAP if so and an appointment would be sent but as of yet he’s heard nothing. My 85 year old mother is with a different surgery and hasn’t been contacted at all.

Their neighbour was given an appointment (different local GP) for last Saturday but the vaccination clinic was cancelled late the night before and hasn’t yet been rescheduled.

Jaffacakeinmypocket · 24/12/2020 22:29

My 93 year old Mum hasn't yet but her 84 year old neighbour at same surgery had her first jab yesterday.

It does annoy me that people are worrying about 96 year olds getting vaccines when kids are missung school and businesses are going to the ground, besides youngsters wanting to socialise to find a life partner.

I know I will be called callous, but to me life is series of events effected in a personalised way. A childhood, best with education, a young adulthood, best with social activities and discovering your vocation, your late twenties/thirties meeting a partner, starting a family, your later forties , fifties enjoying your kids get on with their lives, and/or reaching your full potential at work, your middle age enjoying retirement, helping with grandchildren, travelling, those without kids really finding success in their career, then getting elderly knowing youve contributed to developing humanities possibilities and/or sent wonderful children out to fulfill mankinds best attributes. As long as I can I would want to watch that happen. But no, I do not want to watch youngsters fail to experience all I have and will just so I can watch their dissappointment for a few more years. Ridiculous.

PrincessNutNuts · 24/12/2020 22:50

They've used all the Pfizer Biontech vaccine haven't they?

No more vaccinations until after Astra Zeneca is approved.

Your argument isn't callous, it's just stupid. Because it misses the blindingly obvious point that I can worry about my elderly DPs' vaccination and the future of my children at the same time . I don't see how for a moment one has to compete with the other.

But as far as 'callous' is concerned, if the cap fits....

Eh? We ordered 40 million. We were supposed to get 10 million by the end of the year though I think that deadline has slipped. Either way it’s coming in almost daily atm.
SRYnegative · 24/12/2020 23:01

However it begs the question as to whether you agree with the lockdown. No the cap does not fit me. I think it might fit those who are watching smugly as rights are eroded and young peoples' lives are ruined. Come on, surely you have a better argument than " if the cap fits!" Hmm This is serious fgs

And I think those vaccines would be better injected into the nurses and drs arms actually.

On the other hand, COVID-19 appears to cause autoimunity in serious cases, so I do wonder what the vaccine might cause. Hmm (not anti vaccer, but autoimmunity is serious s--t.

CrocodilesCry · 24/12/2020 23:16

FIL has his appointment for his first jab on Tuesday. He's 73.
My DGM is 90 and in a care home in the same city - no date for jabs in her home yet (though she has had Covid a month ago).

Windyone · 24/12/2020 23:22

@Frazzled2207 I’ve asked my MP to confirm numbers of Pfizer vaccines coming in to the country. Our GP surgery has said it can’t cope with the Pfizer logistics so we’ll have to wait for Astra Zeneca. I’d hate to think we’re sitting on Pfizer vaccines and not using them on over 80s because of logistics....

LizB62A · 24/12/2020 23:23

We're in West London - nothing for my 84 year old dad yet.
He talked to the doctor about something else today and asked about the vaccine.
He was told they'd run out (presumably the local vaccination centre, not the whole country Shock) and that when they get more stock, they'll do the 2nd vaccinations for the people who they've already given the first one to (presumably the over 90s) and then they'll do the over-80s if they have any left.
So I don't think he'll get done for at least another few weeks

Plussizejumpsuit · 24/12/2020 23:26

Jesus christ I'm so saddened to see various threads about this. Just fucking gold on its been weeks. The impatience of some people! Just wow.

tobee · 24/12/2020 23:35

Yeah but it's not like people are waiting to be given a bar of chocolate.

Icequeen01 · 25/12/2020 00:06

My 81 year old mother had her first jab a week ago (Kent). She was contacted by telephone but as it couldn't be done at her local surgery she told them they would have to speak to me as she didn't know when I could take her because I work!! I nearly had a coronary when she told me as I would have ensured I got time off if needed. Luckily they must have noticed on her records they need to contact me as mum doesn't take things in very well and they just sent me a text with her two dates. God I was so relieved as I thought she'd blown her chance!

SRYnegative · 25/12/2020 01:30

You do realise people have to die of something? So what if we eradicate covid-19? Perhaps we shall continue this new hobby and publish the people dying from flu next and all lock down because of that. If you look at euromomo this is no worse than 2018
