Getting a bit impatient. I didn't get my hopes too high to start with but every time I speak to someone with a relative over 80 they have had it. He and DM (only 75 but vulnerable due to a stroke at the beginning of the year) have seen my DC, their only GC, once since last Christmas. I thought I was being reasonable hoping they would be protected by early February but I'm now wondering whether they will.

Anyone else out there waiting and wondering? Is there a shortage in some areas? They are in Greater Manchester, ironically under the cosh lockdown wise for much of the year and now seemingly in short supply of the vaccine! I know we have to be patient but we've been patient for so long.

Just venting really, I know no-one has the answer.

@Parker231

There’s a lot of elderly to get through as well as the front line NHS and care home staff

75-79 2.33m
80-84 1.72m
85-89 1.04m
90 and over 0.61m

That's what I keep telling my parents, grandparents, aunts and great aunts.

My parents surgery sent out a mass text saying "Don't ring us -you'll be called in when get any vaccine" I bet they've been inundated.

One of my great uncles wanted to just go down there and wait Shock

NatMoz · 27/12/2020 21:47

My husband's 99 year old Grandad hasn't been told he can have the vaccine yet!

eastegg · 27/12/2020 22:27

Really interested to read everyone's experiences. Provision is obviously very patchy which I suppose is to be expected in the early days of such a huge vaccination programme, especially given the storage issues. Hopefully the Oxford vaccine will be approved and things will start moving faster

Local surgery is prioritising based on risk factors. So care home residents over 80 go first. Then if anything is available it will go to the over 80s BAME / the very sick but independant etc etc.

LangClegsInSpace · 27/12/2020 22:36

DM hasn't had it yet, she's late 80's and on the shielding list. She and her friends have been doing a lot of phoning around to see who's had it and who hasn't. They've come to the conclusion it's being done by postcode, at least in their town.

She's asked us all to stop asking her whether she's had the invitation yet. She knows it will be any time now but she understands it will take a while to get through everyone and she'd prefer to put it out of her mind until she's called. She can do without the daily stress of being reminded that some people have had the vaccine and she hasn't yet and there's nothing she, or any of us, can do to speed up the process.

digthroughtheditches · 27/12/2020 22:39

Nope. Both grandparents in their 90's not had it. We're in Cheshire.

cabbageking · 27/12/2020 22:41

I shop for two 88 year olds both are considered very vulnerable. Neither has the vaccine yet. Different households and areas. They will both have it when it is their turn.

@IrmaFayLear

Btw I have no truck with people of 80 who have their mental faculties who are not online. I don’t know anyone elderly who does not know how to send/receive emails/shop online/read Daily Mail (!) .

You do not need a smartphone or to be an ace hacker on the dark web - basic it skills are vital in today’s world.

Can someone remind me. Why do elderly BAME people refuse the vaccine. Do they think despite all the evidence that they are the highest risk, BAME, elderly and probably with underlining health conditions that it doesn’t include them?

My DM will often look to me for guidance. Where are the children of these at risk people?

Can you be a bit more specific? BAME encompasses so many different ethnicities with various distinct cultural/social reasons to distrust vaccines.
Bathroom12345 · 28/12/2020 09:43

Thanks Vonny. I think you have answered the question but let’s say the Somalian community or the Sikh community?

What would stop them having the vaccine. Genuinely interested btw. For me it’s a no brainier for my parents. I am way down the list.

There's a long, grim history of unethical medical trials conducted in developing countries and in poor populations (overwhelmingly BAME) in wealthy nations. That's probably where a lot of mistrust comes from.

One of my dearest friends is an Asian slightly overweight nurse. She works for the NHS, had her risk assessment 7 weeks ago. Not had any vaccination as yet, but tested twice a week for Covid. She is run off her feet and worried like I have never seen before.

Defenbaker · 12/01/2021 22:38

My 86yr old MIL has been given an appt for her first jab, on 16 Jan, at a local clinic a few miles away. She could wait until her local GP surgery offers it, but is keen to have it asap, so DH will drive her there. MIL is relieved it's happening at last.

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 12/01/2021 23:07

My dad's 92 and has heard nothing. His surgery are pretty much impossible to get hold of right now for appointments or anything.

SchnitzelVonCrummsTum · 12/01/2021 23:15

@wasgoingmadinthecountry - the surgery might simply be further down the waiting list for vaccines than other surgeries. Many are only just getting their first batch. It doesn't sound like there is any reason to contact them as I expect they are extremely busy.

CarryOnFestiveNamechanging · 13/01/2021 07:09

My mother (81) has had her vaccine but my dad (82 with every health condition under the sun) hasn’t been offered it yet! Registered with the same GP (Manchester area).
