Just thought I'd start a new thread for the north east lot as number 3 is getting pretty full!

@PennyDreadfuI hope you're ok and hope you don't mind me picking the thread up!

Oh and as to the restaurant on the Avenue, in an earlier incarnation it was providing gourmet molecular gastronomy ie trying to do a Heston Blumenthal.

Unfortunately the owners gave it the name The G Spot.

PickAChew · 02/04/2021 17:11

🤣

MrsEWeatherwax · 02/04/2021 19:57

I remember the restaurant The G Spot. Never went.
I should stop reading vaccine side effects threads as they make it sound like everyone has bad side effects, plus my DD was ill. I should be just thrilled I’m fineBlush
My DF has a dead arm from Pfizer.

myrtleWilson · 02/04/2021 19:59

DH went to The G Spot for a work thing I think - we were intending to go when it was called DH1 I think? We've eaten at Bang & Holli and it was lovely but a little slow - it turned out that they'd done a massive mega thousand postal drop across the city (rather than staggering it over a couple of weeks) and were overloaded with take away orders!

PickAChew · 02/04/2021 20:04

Yes, it's still DH1 on Google Street View.

MuddlingMackem · 03/04/2021 00:46

I've only been lurking on these threads, but good to hear that the Japanese treats shop is still in business, @MrsEWeatherwax, the DC really liked it last time were were in Durham, February half term 2020 I think it was, for the Ice & Fire event.

Oh, and I got to peek inside the Nightingale near Nissan today, as that's where I got my OxfordAZ vaccine. Grin They were very efficient. :)

MrsEWeatherwax · 03/04/2021 10:43

Hope you have no side effects MuddlingMackem. Everyone who I have spoken you, have said the vaccine appointment was very efficient.
I missed the Fire and Ice event this year. So sad it wasn’t on. I really enjoyed the first year when it was on in October, hardly anyone seemed to know it was on. So no queuing to get close to anything and front row at the fire/ water light show at end(both shows). Hopefully will be on next year.
Chilly here today, hoodie will have to go back on.

MuddlingMackem · 03/04/2021 14:25

@MrsEWeatherwax, I didn't know that there'd been an October one, the first one the kids and I chanced on was in February, so we'd made a point of going the following years.

Sore arm, and felt cold and shivery last night when I went to bed. Still feeling weak from lack of sleep, but I was already chronically sleep deprived so this really hasn't helped. Grin Jab arm is still a bit sore, but no other pain so far.

MrsEWeatherwax · 03/04/2021 14:36

Yes. There was a one in the October half term the year before. So I think we have been to 3 in total. I really enjoy them. My DD are older teenagers but even they enjoy. First year October was lovely and warm and they were melting at a rate of knots.
Was hoping they could do this October as had missed February due to Covid.
Hope you feel better soon. My sleep pattern is shit due to the menopause.

MrsEWeatherwax · 03/04/2021 14:45

Just checked my photos and there was one in 2016!
Now doubting myself, I’m sure I went in October half term. But we have been to every single one, sad I know.

PickAChew · 03/04/2021 14:52

I'm through the menopause, now, and feel a little better for it. Never 100% but more predictable,, at least.

Good to see you here, @muddlingmackem. We should try to do that lucky trade, the next time they increase the radius.

I was going to head into town, this morning, but when push came to shove, couldn't be arsed. Something to do with being woken up by jangling lego at silly o'clock. I just headed to the big coop for some of what I wanted (the arnison traffic passing me was insane, so if you're contemplating it, don't!) and discovered that our little greengrocer that closed down a year ago now has a new owner. It now has more of an afro-caribbean leaning, whilst it was Indian before but still has lots of interesting stuff and plenty of herbs and spices.

MuddlingMackem · 03/04/2021 14:58

Hmm, I think we've been to three F&I events. The first one the kids and I chanced on when we were in Durham for something else, so the next two we went to on purpose. Was there one in 2020? Because if there was I think we missed it. I'm curious now as on my FB albums I can only find 2018 and 2019. I think the first one we went to had an ice Game of Thrones throne.

Last year's was timed just at the start of when things were getting weird. Iirc they cancelled the one where you got to chip chocolate out of a sculpture but the rest was fairly normal. I vaguely remember it being a rather warm day, on the Saturday, and there not being much left of the one in north road after Ds1 and I got back from wherever our journey took us, that day.

PickAChew · 03/04/2021 15:20

And my lasting memory of the 2018 one is Ds1 having a meltdown and we ended up stuck on Millburn gate bridge for an hour while we waited for dh to get home from teesside to rescue us. It was a cold one, that year!

MrsEWeatherwax · 03/04/2021 15:57

There was on before Game of Thrones. I have photos from the 2017 one. I’m sure the first one only had about 5 ice sculptures. Definitely a lot smaller. But my memory is shit, I’m blaming menopause for that tooBlush

myrtleWilson · 03/04/2021 16:30

ooh pick can I ask where your grocer is?

we popped up to arnison - don't go to Sainsbury's if you need milk Grin

Also, I forgot to return the birthday greetings to @MrsEWeatherwax DD

PickAChew · 03/04/2021 16:38

At the Alnwick Road shops in Newton Hall, @myrtleWilson

It's a tiny shop but so nice to have.

MuddlingMackem · 04/04/2021 16:43

Thanks for that link @PickAChew, I've just checked my phone gallery and we did go to last year's after all, I recognised the DeLorean in that link so had to check. I've now been raking through our photos and @MrsEWeatherwax, 2017 was definitely the first one we did, with the throne, the kids and I chanced upon it whilst in Durham for another reason, and subsequent years DH has been as well.

And yes, PickAChew, we do need to sort out that Lucky Trade. :)

MrsEWeatherwax · 04/04/2021 16:58

I was convinced I went to on in the October half term. I’m shocked it’s been going for 5 years. Hopefully they can maybe do this October, everyone should be vaccinated and it’s outside.
Today is even more boring than a usual Sunday.
Both parents now second vaccine, I am so relieved.
Windy again today, but we could have snow, just no snow. I bloody hate the stuff.
Roll on the 12th for more shops. Can’t wait until May when cinema can open. I will be going to see anything.

MuddlingMackem · 04/04/2021 17:14

DH has missed his cinema. I've missed my football, watching it on streaming just isn't the same.

Someaddedsugar · 05/04/2021 19:18

Hope everyone's had a lovely long weekend!

So pleased the snow was only brief and hasn't stuck around!

We had a takeaway Sunday dinner from the Traveller's Rest yesterday and it was lovely - DP was talking to the owners who were saying they're getting prepared to open on the 14th so I'm hoping the weather gets a bit warmer for them as the takeaways we've had have been lovely and it would be such a shame if they had to close.

I took DS to Belsay Hall today for their Easter treasure hunt as Gibside didn't have one this year from what I could find online. Definitely worth a visit now the flowers are all out! The daffodil walk is beautiful.

Before we went I popped in to Sainsbury's at the Arnison Centre and it was chaos in the shop - strangely the car park was quiet but the shop itself was so busy! There wasn't anyone on the door checking people in or out either and it definitely felt like a bit of a free-for-all with big groups heading in.

Looking forward to the rest of the shops opening on the 12th and I'm trying to make an effort to shop in actual shops rather than online where I can, and to make sure I visit more local independent shops where possible.

Hello everyone. It’s been a lovely BH weekend. We’ve just had a takeaway from the Pavillion up at Iveston. It was lovely.

We’ve had a little bit of snow here overnight and it’s been hail stoning (if that’s the right phrase!) this evening. The wind is biting cold.

I am so looking forward to hopefully things getting a bit more back to normal.

Hope you’re all well.

PickAChew · 05/04/2021 22:03

Our bedroom is in a rather large dorma, dating from the 70s, in its current form, if our research is accurate, and the wind was hitting it straight on, last night. I was about 3' away, expecting to wake up next to a big hole, at some point in the night. Next door's greenhouse was given up on and dismantled, a few days ago. Probably a good thing because it would have ended up in someone else's garden, last night!

Wwve had a rather tired weekend. Ds2 was up at about 3am, yesterday.

MuddlingMackem · 05/04/2021 22:33

We had about five minutes of light snow / hail mix when out in the car this evening, but nothing else. Luckily for DD, who is the one in this house with the dormer room. At least she is no longer in a high sleeper! Grin

XXYY · 06/04/2021 16:12

Hi, anyone know if people in their 40s are being vaccinated in Newcastle yet please? My GP surgery says we have to wait to be invited by national booking database, the GP surgery is not sending out invitations. Sounds a bit odd to me, also sounds like I have to wait for ages if it is done nationally rather than locally. Thank you.
