Do you think this will mean school closures?

OP posts:
Chocolate4me · 22/12/2020 17:22

Our secondary school have said the government propose they test all the kids, and if they have been in contact with a positive case, instead of isolating they can have a daily test for 7 days so they can stay in school

Angrywife · 22/12/2020 17:47

I think the transmission rate amongst children is irrelevant to the government unless it leads to a sharp increase in deaths. People getting it and recovering it isn't their concern.

notagoodyear · 22/12/2020 17:53

I agree with pp who say a new variant that is more infectious will logically infect more children.

School closures should be based on scientific evidence and studies. I would prefer my DS be in school instead of isolated at home on a laptop for 7 hours of school followed by 3-4 hours of homework/revision (sixth form). Who thinks 11 hours a day sitting on your own in your bedroom on a laptop studying is healthy and acceptable for a teenager? Not me, but we will do as told.

What annoys me is the other areas of the economy that will be kept open if schools close. I thought keeping pupils in school was this government's priority and other things would be closed in order for that to happen. In a low tier area such as mine, school closures would be taking place while pubs were still open! What kind of society has the UK become under this donor-driven government...

mumoid · 22/12/2020 18:02

Dual delivery could be one way forward. Horrendously hard work for teachers who are already overworked and can be beset by tech problems but a way of keeping schools open to those who are not vulnerable or self isolating while allowing those who are unable to attend remote access to the lesson via camera etc. Grim for all but still better than closing schools

cherish123 · 22/12/2020 18:06

@bernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz I think you are right. It would make sense.

I’m a teacher. I’m currently lying in bed where I have been for the last 2 days - literally unable to move. I’m awaiting a covid test result. I am horrified at some of the comments on this thread bashing schools and teachers. Can I just say for the record that it is the government who are suggesting schools may close. Not teachers. We’ve worked unbelievably hard to try to keep schools open this term. Perhaps some of you on here should blame the disease instead of blaming teachers and schools. Also, no teacher I know has asked to bump anyone off any vaccine list so they can get one - please stop writing nonsense. Thank you to those who are supporting teachers and schools.

I hope the rest is negative and I hope you get well soon. I admire teachers and hate the bashing they get. It's was a horrible term. ( not a teacher , but I work a few hours in a school ) Critics should try working in one. They would be surprised how hard it is at the best of times let alone during a pandemic.

I think it’s worth mentioning that vaccinating teachers isn’t just about the statistics for how likely a child is to spread Covid or become very unwell themselves. Staff are catching Covid. If a teacher has Covid (passed from a colleague or student or random contact) it is extremely disruptive to the school. I wonder if the same people who think teachers are no more at risk than anyone else (and should be at the back of the line due to their superior immunity) will be very understanding when their children are in a continuous pattern of needing to self isolate due to bubbles bursting or have to do online learning due to constant staff shortages. Plus, oh yeah, teachers are mixing with loads of people with no ppe.

FluffySocks75 · 22/12/2020 21:51

@EachDubh John Sw is a rocket. Wish he would come to my school

MrsFezziwig · 23/12/2020 01:24

Vaccinating teachers is not about them dying (thank goodness). It’s about them not getting sick and thus disrupting education. You can let the kids get infected but this won’t impact on the numbers of teachers infected - they don’t have to die (thank goodness again) for major disruption to occur if half of them are off for 2-3 weeks.

MrsFezziwig · 23/12/2020 01:31

Sorry nymum I should have read right to the bottom of the page as I’ve just more or less repeated your post! (but perhaps it bears repeating for the benefit of those who are becoming apoplectic at the thought of teachers’ working conditions actually improving).

amispeakingenglish · 23/12/2020 10:24

Also please remember those like me, the families of teachers, especially those young teachers still living at home due to things like London house problems. I'm in 60s as is my dd dad and he has asthma. She has a vulnerable sister too. I have now been ill for over 2 weeks with something, no idea what. No fever but total loss of appetite among other things. I have no chance of seeing my parents unless my daughter leaves home!!

amispeakingenglish · 23/12/2020 10:25

Meant London house prices.....

PandemicPavolova · 23/12/2020 10:29

I had dual delivery via training and I can't see the massive issue?

The trainer had people in the room, we heard her, saw the presentation, could talk, ask questions, and interact same as people in the room? It was all recorded as well..
The trainer did everything once? What is the massive deal with that! Instead of simply doing it to the room she simply joined us on a meet simultaneously. By pressing a button. Confused

PandemicPavolova · 23/12/2020 10:30

Lack of NHS staff is causing huge problems in hospitals. Same will happen more unless teachers are on the vaccine list.

PandemicPavolova · 23/12/2020 10:32

Sky news gov conference on new strain now.

HazeyJaneII · 23/12/2020 10:40

I wish someone, somewhere in the wider conversation about new strains, vaccine rollout and susceptibility of children...would mention children with medical vulnerabilities....just one person...it feels as though children like ds have been utterly forgotten.

Localocal · 23/12/2020 13:25

No, I don't think it means school closures. I think it means all the lateral flow devices have to go to the schools so they can test, test, test. So they can stay open.

Nellodee · 23/12/2020 13:29

Except the lateral flow tests missed half of the old strain, and with a new strain that has a much higher natural R, letting half of all infections remain in the classroom to spread their infections will mean absolute chaos, massive infection rates amongst parents, teachers and students, vastly increased spread in the community, overloaded hospitals and an increase in the fatality rate of all illnesses due to a breakdown of the NHS.

Go lateral flow testing!

Burratorchildhood · 24/12/2020 21:58

Just to update - I am the teacher who was waiting for her covid result. I found out today that I am positive.

ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas · 24/12/2020 23:25

I'm sorry to hear that Sad Hope you have a mild dose and recover quickly Flowers

Fortherosesjoni70 · 24/12/2020 23:26

2 of my relatives are teachers including myself. Both have caught it. Its now becoming very real.

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 24/12/2020 23:28

@Burratorchildhood
I hope you feel better soon. Make sure you get lots of rest.

FluffySocks75 · 29/12/2020 00:45

My friend's partner brought home covid from school before the holidays. My friend is now in ICU. So covid came from school. Schools aren't safe
