Some posters seem determined to whip up panic. From the BBC website:

Freight industry lobby group Logistics UK appealed for calm from shoppers, and said it was "maintaining close contact with UK government to ensure that supplies of fresh produce are available throughout Christmas and the new year".

Although freight from France is still allowed to enter Britain, there are fears lorry drivers might not travel because they fear being stuck in the UK over Christmas.

Unaccompanied freight, such as containers or lorry trailers on their own, can still be transported.

Thank god

notimagain · 21/12/2020 11:42

First country to.shut down access to all Britss yesterday was the Netherlands, the French were relatively late in taking action so I doubt Mr Macron is up to anything other than protecting his own population.

Giningit · 21/12/2020 11:47

Exactly @notimagain! The French are actually trying to put together a protocol to allow freight in, because their own lorry drivers are also caught up in this.

"as long as he goes and we get a real Leader in place" there's one who can cure covid with his magic wand? A leader who knew the virus would come and knew it would mutate at this time? One who can send everyone home safely while somehow maintaining the supply of education, water, electricity, food etc

One who has hypnotic powers perhaps so he can make all the idiots take the precautions to better get this under control. Now THAT would be useful. We have whole threads right here full of people celebrating the efforts to spread the virus faster.

I notice that none of the other countries found such a leader either. Perhaps because Krypton isn't a real place.

EnPoinsettia · 21/12/2020 11:58

Perhaps because Krypton isn't a real place.

New Zealand is though.

FitbitCat · 21/12/2020 12:30

This isn't to do with sodding Brexit. Do you think Canada and India are part of Brexit?

rumerhasit · 21/12/2020 12:30

My dh is on a ship and they have just changed course, they were headed for the U.K...they are not now, some crew are due off next week and they don't want to get stuck in the U.K. They are going to Holland instead.

Beccasb · 21/12/2020 12:34

@LastTrainEast a pandemic virus has been the biggest threat to the UK for the last 10 years according to... the government national risk register. They knew it would come and they didn’t prepare. It’s not a surprise, viruses also mutate.
We are also no longer in the acute phase of the response and need a long term plan, better planning of the tiers, better communication.

SimonJT · 21/12/2020 12:39

I’ve just been to Sainsburys, no busier than usual and nobody appeared to buying silly amounts.

We’re tier 4 as well, so there will be people buying xmas food who were planning to eat elsewhere.

BlackForestCake · 21/12/2020 12:43

@Mumofsend

Push comes to shove couldn't they just do relays? We load up ourside, unhook the lorry cab. Goes across and then their side they hook it back up and vice versa?
That is essentially how unaccompanied freight works, but it depends on having an entire container all going to the same place.
BlackForestCake · 21/12/2020 12:45

@notevenat20

Hmm, so if your husband was the lorry driver allowed in but not out, would he be coming this week?

Cough... 2020?....”husband”??

If there is a Long Distance Clara on the thread I'm sure we'd all love to hear from her.
pinkbalconyrailing · 21/12/2020 12:48

no freight via netherlands...

Freight IS allowed in. No need for panic buying!

@LastTrainEast We are the country most affected by Covid in Europe! Where have you been for the last 9 months? Other countries have handled it better eg South Korea and Germany. The problem is Johnson is ineffective in a crisis. Want more proof that he’s crap?
-He missed 2 COBR meetings on 24th and 29th Jan to discuss the emerging Covid crisIs, because he doesn’t do detail don’t you know.
-31st Jan, 2 people on the UK test positive for the virus and the NHS declares a level 4 critical incident for the first time

  • On the same day the UK was invited to join a European scheme to source PPE but he declined, because that wouldn’t look too Brexity now would it?
-He misses another COBR Covid meeting on 5th Feb, because... reasons -12th Feb, he missed another COBR meeting. -14th Feb, he runs away to Chevening (taxpayer funded residence) to sort his divorce out before he can announce his engagement to his pregnant girlfriend. -18th Feb, he misses another COBR meeting -29th Feb, day after first British death and NHS warns of severe PPE shortages, Johnson then chooses to announce his engagement that day from Chequers. -2nd Mar Johnson finally attends a COBR meeting -3rd Mar Scientists urge the government to tell the public not to shake hands. On the same day Johnson says he went round shaking hands with Covid patients🙄 -7th Mar he goes to a six nations rugby match, no precautions taken at all -9th Mar, France and Ireland ban large events. UK, business as usual -10th Mar, 250k people go to Cheltenham Festival which leads to a spike in cases after the event -11th Mar Global Pandemic declared -Spain closes schools etc due to the spike in cases and 3000 Atletico Madrid fans allowed to fly in to attend the match V Liverpool, which then leads to a spike in cases on Merseyside -12th Mar, the UK stops Testing and Contact tracing to follow a strategy of Herd Immunity. The government’s projection was that this would kill quarter of a million people. Nobody else in the world was doing this apart from Sweden! -13th Mar, Johnson lifted restrictions on people arriving into the UK from Wuhan, Italy and Iran! Why? Just Why? -13th Mar, due to lack of PPE(although we could have joined the European scheme in January), NHS staff were told to wear less PPE and reuse current stocks! -14th Mar, 5000 allowed to go to a Stereophonics gig! -15th Mar Germany closes it’s borders, Ireland closes it’s pubs -17th Mar France goes into lockdown -18th Mar WHO says contact tracing is key but by now the UK has already stopped contact tracing in favour of herd immunity -19th Mar the government tells Care Homes to take in elderly patients that have Covid which leads to a spike in Care Home deaths!! -20th Mar the government says the NHS has enough PPE but the NHS says they have acute shortages putting NHS staff at risk, which leads to the spike in deaths of NHS frontline workers. -20th Mar Johnson says he’s going to see his mother on Mother’s Day but on 22nd Mar, he says people won’t be allowed to visit their mothers on Mother’s Day. The first of many, many, U-turns to come -23rd Mar we go into lockdown -27th Mar Cummings & Johnson have Coronavirus. Cummings breaks lockdown rules but gets to keep his job, in the process eroding the public’s trust in the government. -7th April UK has only done a fifth of the number of tests that Germany has done -18th Apr The government tells us that 400k Turkish PPE gowns are meant to arrive the following day, but they don’t -21st Apr. An investigation uncovers that UK PPE manufacturers offered to help the government weeks ago but were turned down. I’m guessing that ministers already had these lucrative contracts earmarked for their friends as we later found out. Instead millions of PPE items were shipped to Europe hmm] -22nd Apr, the government announced that it will resume contact tracing. Better late than never, however a few weeks later they abandon the Track and Trace app. Other countries went straight for the Google/Apple one and seemed to have better success with it, however the government declined to use it despite being told by Apple that the UK app violated their Privacy policy so wouldn’t work with IPhones. In the end the government abandoned their App and went with the Google/Apple one months later! Yet another U-Turn
  • 22nd April, those 400k PPE gowns finally arrive but fail safety standards so cannot be used. By the way, these were ordered from a TShirt manufacturer.
-5th May, the UK has the highest death toll in Europe! Do you want me to carry on?
PandemicPavolova · 21/12/2020 14:38

I thought our race to the bottom is being pipped by Belgium and Italy?

Giningit · 21/12/2020 14:48

Just checked and to 19th Dec, Italy are now leading. Point still stands though. We’ve still got time to regain the lead Grin
