Freight IS allowed in. No need for panic buying!

Some posters seem determined to whip up panic. From the BBC website:

Freight industry lobby group Logistics UK appealed for calm from shoppers, and said it was "maintaining close contact with UK government to ensure that supplies of fresh produce are available throughout Christmas and the new year".

Although freight from France is still allowed to enter Britain, there are fears lorry drivers might not travel because they fear being stuck in the UK over Christmas.

Unaccompanied freight, such as containers or lorry trailers on their own, can still be transported.

Cue panic buying of frozen veg.

Hahaha.

justanotherneighinparadise · 21/12/2020 09:25

It’s Brexit early. And why not!

Giningit · 21/12/2020 09:27

I’m off the supermarket soon, to get the Christmas shopping in and will be cancelling my delivery afterwards. Not panic buying, just being sensible, so I can get what I actually want to eat on Christmas Day.

Lifeispassingby · 21/12/2020 09:37

@Chloemol but aren’t the other ports going to have similar issues? Are we just seeing Dover stack up so quickly because of the large volumes? The issues are going to be the same- nothing can leave for France so it can’t return can it? (Genuine not sarcastic or goady)

FOJN · 21/12/2020 09:49

Thanks for the post OP. I appreciate knowing there are other people who understand there is the possibility of disruption but remain calm and confident that solutions will be found. Whilst some things may become harder to get hold of we are unlikely to starve. I think I'll survive if Christmas dinner is missing one or two traditional items. I've stocked up in non perishables over the last few months so there is no need for me to panic buy.

Have a good Christmas.

You too FOJN Xmas Smile

This could get serious if there is panic buying in the shops with the new more infective strain in circulation. Parliament must be recalled so MPs can call on Johnson to beg the EU for an extension to the transition period, in the interests of public health. It’s not about whether anyone is for Leave or Remain, it’s about protecting public health and freeing up the government to focus on controlling the pandemic, not being diverted on Brexit spin. I have emailed my MP about it and would recommend everyone else who is worried about this to contact theirs.

The likes of Sainsbury’s aren’t helping with headlines about possible shortages - that will encourage the panic buying and create shortages.

The situation is rubbish and I am sure that moving forward we are going to have issues but people panic buying or just “getting one extra” of things will cause the problems to worsen.

I’m not sure what the term “unaccompanied freight” means. I have visions of truckfulls of fruit arriving at the port and all the Ribena berries jumping off...😂

toolatetooearly · 21/12/2020 10:18

I told the family (jokingly) that they would just eating pasta and tomato sauce on Xmas Day because I wouldn't be able to get hold of normal Christmas dinner. My kids faces lit up with excitement.

cushioncovers · 21/12/2020 10:22

Thank you for this calm thread. Disruption doesn't mean the end of civilisation, unlike the other thread running about import/export where most posters are prophesying the end of the world. 🙄

The containers which are loaded onto ships at one end and then transported over and picked up from the port. Rather than being driven onto a ship by the driver who then brings it into the country and to its final destination
AcornAutumn · 21/12/2020 10:36

Sirzy thank you.

Frazzled2207 · 21/12/2020 10:41

good news I think.

The French government has said that “in the next few hours” it will establish
a “protocol to ensure that movement from the UK can resume”.

In a post shared on Twitter by the French embassy in the UK, French transport Minister Jean-Baptiste Djebbari said: “In the next few hours, at European level, we’re going to establish a solid health protocol to ensure that movement from the UK can resume.

“Our priority: to protect our nationals and our fellow citizens.”

Hahaha.

I saw a woman (presumably) panic buying rice pudding and custard in Aldi this morning Confused.

Re un accompanied freight! Could have lived my entire life without ever hearing that phrase 😂.

Rob from the young s haulage said, it will all be fine, he said they frequently have bouts of chaos for various reasons (French strikes) and they are very well versed in sorting it out very quickly. He doesn't feel the need to postpone brexit nor does he feel there will be food shortages.

PandemicPavolova · 21/12/2020 10:53

It's flowing people, movement is occurring lorries coming in .... Stand down.

Mumofsend · 21/12/2020 10:55

Push comes to shove couldn't they just do relays? We load up ourside, unhook the lorry cab. Goes across and then their side they hook it back up and vice versa?

I think that would require both sides to cooperate.

It would be a big job though to plan on having the right cabs in the right places and would get very confusing contract wise.

An expensive logistical nightmare I would imagine!

SansaSnark · 21/12/2020 11:27

I agree that panic buying won't help anyone, but I think it's worth bearing in mind that there will be a knock on impact over the next several days due to containers and drivers not being where they need to be.

But I agree that panic buying will not help anyone.

We need the likes of Sainsbury’s and others to tell us as it is. So fed up of Johnson and his false optimism bullshit. He just makes stuff as he goes along. He’d have more credibility if he just admitted that he doesn’t know what’s going on and steps down. Use Long Covid or having child number 19 as an excuse. Don’t really care right now, as long as he goes and we get a real Leader in place.
cologne4711 · 21/12/2020 11:36

I have to say I am now thinking this is all to do with Brexit after all.

When covid started, European countries closed their borders to each other, but there were exemptions for freight and essential workers.

So why are those exemptions not in place for the UK? I can't help thinking that Macron is up to his tricks again.

Mumofsend · 21/12/2020 11:38

True hadn't thought about how practicalities although I suppose for something absolutely essential on a limited basis it could be an option.

@cologne4711 its exactly what they are doing today. Working out a plan to get freight moving without accidently infecting mainland Europe in the process.
