Surely we’ll all be in full lockdown very soon?

With the recent travel bans and now freight banned from France, Hancock saying the new variant is ‘out of control’ etc - how long can it be until the whole UK is in lockdown? A few days maybe?

I didn’t suggest that the new strain hadn’t reached anywhere other than the south east. Facilitating thousands of people to bring more of it north, to thousands of households, still looks extremely ill-advised

Stable door!
I live in Cornwall, we are having more outbreaks of CV, in my village we had none until 2 weeks ago, 12 all tested +ve from one pub, people with very limited contact with some of these folk have also tested +ve.
Plenty of smart cars with private plates on the roads, usually seen only during holiday periods.
Local 2nd homes now occupied, because we are T1, people can pretty much do as they like.

We allowed the spread in Kent to continue unabated, once again gross incompetence from Johnsons govt.

Toocold · 21/12/2020 08:47

I have tier 4 accent... presumably as I’m in tier 4 ... I do not live in London nor Kent but I live in a village near to another village in tier 2, pretty sure they have the same accent as me! This alone has made me smile this morning.

@triceratops12

I'd honestly be surprised if we make it to Christmas
I wonder that too! The news is just so grim this morning.

I’m guessing we will be in lockdown on the 28th, as soon as Christmas is out the way Sad, it was always going to be thought in January and now with the new strain I can’t see them not putting us all in lockdown. The sooner they do it the sooner we can get this under control whilst rolling out the vaccine.

FiggyPuddingFiend · 21/12/2020 08:56

I don't have the accent of the place I live and neither does my husband - we moved here for university, met each other and never left. I'm sure this is true of many places with a large university.

I don't think primary or SEN schools will close - smaller bubbles, children can't be left home alone. However I do think it is more likely something will happen with secondary and colleges - what that is, I'm not sure.

Atalune · 21/12/2020 08:56

Well I haven’t been to IKEA this year and I consider it one of my happy places. Dd is in need of a room revamp and we have Done nothing because we won’t go to ikea.

We are T3 here although in my parish the numbers are low, we have not had a single school closure (aside from the National lockdown) and people pretty much obey the rules. However the grotty big town near us (16 miles away)is riven with covid pushing our numbers up. It is very very annoying.

Castiel07 · 21/12/2020 09:00

I'm glad it wasn't just me who heard it, I feel like Im In a dream most of the time with everything going on.

onedayinthefuture · 21/12/2020 09:00

@Castiel07

I'm sure I heard this morning on TV that the government are thinking of vaccinating teenagers.

I don't know if vaccinating teenagers is the right thing to do but certainly all school staff and the 50+ first. I know the 80+ are at most risk but the majority can shield until they can have the vaccine. Working people can't.

I think there is some logic of vaccinating teenagers as a priority. And focusing it in South East 1st.

willsantausesantatize · 21/12/2020 09:05

I totally understand why the Cornish pubs turning people away that have second homes there , but I bet the person that sold them the second home is now sitting on a nice pile of money from the sale of said house.
They didn't worry about their local people not being able to afford their own home and was happy to sell it to them knowing they had a first home! I know you can't choose your buyers but they could have rented it out to a local instead if they are so worried about being overrun with ' outsiders' !
I can see Cornwall wanting independence once the vaccine has been rolled out completely at this rate.

PhilCornwall1 · 21/12/2020 09:07

Jesus, that's a scary thought.

nosswith · 21/12/2020 09:07

I'm not going to predict when I think tier 4 restrictions will be extended, or what will happen with schools. What I can say with a degree of certainty is that a government that cannot even turn up on time for its own press conferences will be late in its response, compared with other countries.

MintyCedric · 21/12/2020 09:08

Honestly I'd welcome a full, nationwide lockdown.

What were doing currently isn't working and the tier system seems far more dystopian and divisive than having everyone in the same boat.

timeforanewstart · 21/12/2020 09:08

@willsantausesantatize how can cornwall be independent , There has always been a tony majority that shout this , but financially they can't and its not on the table
They have less cases due to population density ,

Ha ha I don't have the accent of where I live and DH has same accent as me.

BUT the kids don't. They sound like their pals.

So the tier 2 attraction i am going to today will have lots of kids with similar accents.

There will also be lots of kids with different accents, from the local tier 3 areas.

I agree , although the fact that Matt Hancock knew about this new mutant strain of the virus last Monday and they sat on their hands is criminal really! I think a new lockdown looms everywhere which is bad news for people in 1 and 2 etc. I'm in tier 4 myself now and it's grim. Have to soldier on though.

Commiserations re Tier 4. I'm currently in Tier 2 but would much rather have a full lockdown if it meant getting a handle of the situation faster.

I really can't see a viable alternative unfortunately.

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 21/12/2020 09:15

Tier 3 accents lol, it sounds like the beginnings of a dystopian novel.
Like divergent, except going by accents rather than faction clothes.

It’s rather depressing though.
I always wondered in the past how governments so easily got people to inform on each other, but over the last year it’s clear as day.
Instill a bit of fear into a population, and the finger will be pointed before you could even say ‘tier 3 accent’

It’s mad

For you Latin speakers, any guesses as to how the Queen will describe her annus this time?

Surely it's got to be annus futuo incredibilis?

cherryblossomx3 · 21/12/2020 09:20

ah it's all bullshit. Doesn't work. Will just resurface when we let everyone out again. Meanwhile people loose their livelihoods. Mental health continues to deteriorate and suicide rates continue to rise. Domestic violence cases carry on climbing, children in abusive homes fall through the cracks. Future generations pay for this for the rest of their lives so their mental health also falls apart. The government continue to play the south/north political game so they can stand a chance at getting voted in again. In the meantime everyone argues amongst themselves over who's fault it is when really it is no ones fault as it is a virus and spreading is what it does.

Merry bloody Christmas.

Tiquismiquis · 21/12/2020 09:21

I’d hope they keep exam years and primaries open as long as possible. My daughter had covid and fortunately did not (as far as we’re aware) spread it to anyone else in her class. The other outbreak in our primary school did have cases but it seemed to be spread from the teacher having it and the children spreading it to families at home rather than necessarily to and from each other. There has to be a balance between education and social benefits and risk which so far does seem to be lower in primary than secondary.

I do feel for exam years though. Secondaries feel like they are at risk of closing or moving to blended learning but I’d hope years 11 and 13 could be prioritised to continue face to face teaching for as long as possible.
