@Mamamia456

It's only France that have said that for 48 hours. We will still have freight coming from other countries so no need to worry.
On the flights that will be stopped because then the planes will be stuck here? Eurotunnel is stopping (has stopped?) and ferry ports can't be far behind can they?
PicsInRed · 20/12/2020 22:34

7. OTOH Francedoesn'tstop freight or any traffic travellingtothe UK but drivers not resident in the UK, on their travels etc start getting the jitters about crossing the Channel and getting stuck in the UK

They would be stuck in the UK as France wouldn't permit them to travel back into/through France. This effectively cuts off our road freight. Even if drivers were willing to make a one way trip, Europe would soon run out of drivers as they would all be stuck in England.

Chloemol · 20/12/2020 22:36

We don’t just buy via France

EnPoinsettia · 20/12/2020 22:37

@frumpety Raj-Singh manoeuvre!

cardibach · 20/12/2020 22:37

@Mamamia456

JamieLeeCurtains - Course it's not delusional. We're not going to starve. The worst thing that people can do is to start panic buying.
While I’m not totally panicked by this yet, if nobody will send road freight there will be serious food shortages. We can’t fly it all in.
crackofdoom · 20/12/2020 22:37

I'm glad my parsnips did well this year, that's all I'm saying...

justgeton · 20/12/2020 22:37
@justgeton

Because this looks orderly/ planned to you?

If they knew what they were doing, they would have informed the public of the ban on flights and problems with transport of freight during the press conference.

Instead other countries have gone ahead and imposed new emergency rules while the PM is playing catch up by having a Cobra meeting on Monday, after the events.

How long are you going to believe that this lot has a clue of what they are doing?
An orderly planned pandemic. Interesting thought

This is pretty catastrophic. I expect common sense will prevail and some sort of agreement to allow lorry travel between the UK and France will occur.

Otherwise, yikes.

newstrain · 20/12/2020 22:38

@cologne4711

It is all on the rest of the world to stop us exporting our new virus strain to them

Yeah right. It's most prevalent in Kent, but it's only here? Look at a map please.

I think even the UK government admit the new strain originated in Kent first... They are not normally known for owning up to things going wrong.
pennylane83 · 20/12/2020 22:38

I find it suspicious that after managing the crisis well, all of a sudden Germany has cases going out of control, I know its colder there and the virus loves the cold but....

Distraction tactics at their finest. 11 days to go until we're out of Europe, the ramifications of which will be felt by everyone, with neither side willing to bow down. Quick, lets find something else to distract the masses with which we can then blame the inevitable chaos on. Funny how Brexit talk has become very quite in the media despite the looming deadline.

notimagain · 20/12/2020 22:38

You made it too complicated for them and that is a lot of reading

Smile

This all started because "Boris" and Matt Hancock went on TV worldwide and talked up the fact there's a nasty virus doing the rounds in the UK...the world took us at our word and closed the doors on us..

Is that better Grin?

BlackForestCake · 20/12/2020 22:39

@Chloemol

Go on then, mastermind, explain all the other ways food gets into the UK.
Fuckingcrustybread · 20/12/2020 22:40

@TheRubyRedshoes

Armageddon.

They said only 48 hours. It's a very worrying development. However, there are other options to get us food and medicines if need be. I guess planes could do drops ect. But it's concerning.

Ffs 😂😂😂planes dropping!! And it's etc. Etcetera. It's from the Latin language, you'll know all about the Latin language, being a Europhile. 🤣🤣
sosotired1 · 20/12/2020 22:41

^If we're doing mad conspiracy theories....
This is great for Boris as when the shit hits the fan in January he can blame Covid not Brexit. Maybe that's why he's let the new strain run rampant in schools for the last month instead of enforcing an actual lockdown like so many other (UK and EU) governments...^

Ulelia... I am thinking exactly the same... Boris has been looking for a way out of his utter failure to get a deal or (more likely in my mind) because he personally doesn't want a deal (which will become evident once he steps down and reaps the rewards of that position)

VodselForDinner · 20/12/2020 22:41

So Matt Hancock, Britain’s Health Secretary says this new strain is “out of control” in the UK and you lot are blaming other countries for closing the borders?

Fuck that for a game of soldiers.

The UK’s handling of this pandemic has been nothing short of preposterous. Stop trying to export more of your fuck-ups by looking to blame other countries.

Tbf, I'm kind of been waiting on that one since 24th June 2016. And so far I've had no joy...
1frenchfoodie · 20/12/2020 22:42

@crackofdoom that’s the spirit (parsnips) Grin

Avondklok · 20/12/2020 22:43

I'm abroad. Boris has blamed everything on this new "mutant strain" instead of admitting they are crap. They bigged it up to take the blame for ruining Xmas. The rest of Europe doesn't want the nasty so they shut the borders. You reap what you sow. I just feel sorry for the truck drivers and hope something can be sorted quickly.

CoronaIsWatching · 20/12/2020 22:44

We will just have to model our society on the post-war years and look to the 50s for inspiration. Rationing, buying British, good quality clothes made to last, back yard allotments, sensible and functional clothes and hairstyles

DontStopThinkingAboutTomorrow · 20/12/2020 22:45

I'm not panicking- yet.
I will worry more if people panic buy- if people are sensible and supermarkets impose limits on fresher foods we should be OK for now.
If not, I have at least 4 stone of excess calories stored and could survive (but not thrive) on a very limited intake (half hearted attempt at joke).

crackofdoom · 20/12/2020 22:45

1frenchfoodie (so, apt user name! Grin to be fair, they are an essential element of Christmas dinner! Otherwise, I am hard at work on an alternative emergency Christmas ingredient list. So far, seaweed, kale, stilton and tequila are featuring heavily Grin

Flowerblue · 20/12/2020 22:46

Having just had a quick look in the cupboard we are fine for biscuits, green lentils, porridge oats and cocoa powder for quite a while. So should be ok.

ListeningQuietly · 20/12/2020 22:46

From what other countries does fresh food come in to the UK ?

hint, Dover, Folkestone, Portsmouth, Poole all link to France

Thinking similar... evening cheese and biscuits need to become lunch...

Emerge from next lockdown a svelte shadow of myself....

48 hours may not sound a lot of time but that could be a number of days of food for certain areas of the country.

Let's hope that isn't true.
