@Theotherrudolph

Fishy, don’t be absurd. No more large gatherings?! What, forever? Not many people are that altruistic.

Besides, we could save the nhs in far less costly ways - food rationing perhaps. No obesity, less t2 diabetes, less heart disease, reduced rates of some types of cancer, fewer musculoskeletal problems.... then the nhs would have all the time in the world to sort out covid patients.

No it wouldn’t. And I think this is the point that people are still failing to grasp. The combination of the speed at which this is transmitted, and the proportion of people that need hospitalisation and critical care beds in order to get the high survival rate means a lot of people needing care over a very short period of time. It would block up the beds many many times over in healthcare systems all over the world, not just the NHS. And no body is getting good care in that situation.

The reality is we really have two options. You go for an initial zero/very very low covid policy and then stamp out localised outbreaks with life returning pretty much as normal elsewhere. Or you run it hot with restrictions to ‘flatten the curve’ and lockdowns when those high numbers threaten to overwhelm healthcare.

I don’t think there are really a lot of options in between.

Hello yes agree I think that’s why it’s always key to go back to the conversation.

@BonnieDundee

I'd like to see a proper lockdown implemented until the end of January at least-one hourof outdoor exercise per day (not endless gallivanting and going out for unnecessary reasons), one shopping tripper week(for essential food and medicine only, not wine and gin) and £100 rewards for neighbours who report people out for too long or too often.

Oh for FUCK sake. Take your fucking Stasi ideals and shove them where the sun doesnt shineXmas Angry

@BonnieDundee bet you were a curtain twitcher earlier in the year and then complained when people bought Easter eggs.

It’s very worrying how many posters would love to live in a communist state judging by some of the posts.

BonnieDundee · 20/12/2020 16:31

@texascactus it wasnt me. I was quoting someone else. I'm very anti curtain twitching Grin

SecretSpAD · 20/12/2020 16:31

@BonnieDundee thank you. We did indeed. There were a few other people there as well, but it was all very safe and efficient.

Chalfontstgiles · 20/12/2020 16:31

I think a lot of the negative posters on MN use the forum to ‘play out’ the absolute worst case catastrophic scenarios ....not sure why? Maybe to pre empt the shock if it actually came to fruition? Maybe because if this was played out in the home they’d drive all other family members round the bend? Whatever. I just stick to the facts. 67k people deceased and 180k people now vaccinated.

dreamingbohemian · 20/12/2020 16:37

I try to be optimistic but I can't get too excited about 180K vaccinated in a population of 60 million, sorry

“Everyone should be asking every time they leave home "is this trip worth me killing someone with COVID?". If the answer is no, they should stay the fuck at home.“

Is this trip worth me having a slightly increased risk of “killing someone” you mean? Sometimes, bluntly, yes.

Theotherrudolph · 20/12/2020 16:48

Rudolph, I wasn’t being entirely serious...

But in Fishy’s world we’re all socially distancing forever! I wasn’t meaning in the short term. After a few years and a few more waves, eventually it will be controllable/copable with in ways other than lockdown. I think my plan is at least as good as Fishy’s!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/12/2020 16:49

I cannot believe we are still banging on about Easter eggs. Is it so difficult to understand that if a shop is open you can buy whatever it sells whether that's milk, potatoes or a fucking Easter Egg?

Just out of curiosity @FishyDog, what exactly do you class as essential?

Theotherrudolph · 20/12/2020 16:49

Sorry, Rafa. Rudolph is my name!

Nerdygirl · 20/12/2020 16:49

Wow fishy dog you had better not go out in your car then as there is a risk of killing someone . Or every time you have a cold or a cold sore you had better not go out as they can be serious for people with underlying health conditions.

People take precautions, but there are many reasons why they need to go out more than once . We need to talk a holistic and safe approach to the impacts of the pandemic which includes mental health, delays in treatment etc

I wouldn't go out specially for an Easter Egg but if I walk past one in the supermarket, how would picking one up kill anyone?

Haffiana · 20/12/2020 16:54

I am going to the shops to buy just two cucumbers. I will parade them carefully in my trolley so that everyone can gasp with horror at their non-essentialness and wish they could claim their £100.

Then I will bring them home and put one slice in my gin and tonic.

IcedPurple · 20/12/2020 16:55

These exceptions should not include buying Easter eggs, wine or gin

Be a bit daft to buy easter eggs 5 days before Christmas and in any case, I'm more of a vodka girl myself.

Keep on trolling. We're onto you.

£42k? Bargain, must not be government cronies this time Grin

IcedPurple · 20/12/2020 16:56

Cucumber goes really well with Hendrick's and Fevertree. Ice cold.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/12/2020 16:57

Am I allowed to have non essentials in my Ocado delivery? I'm just thinking maybe I shouldn't have ordered the Baileys and Budweiser and other frivolous things for Christmas.

Fizbosshoes · 20/12/2020 16:58

*I cannot believe we are still banging on about Easter eggs. Is it so difficult to understand that if a shop is open you can buy whatever it sells whether that's milk, potatoes or a fucking Easter Egg?

Just out of curiosity@FishyDog, what exactly do you class as essential?*

Someone in March was reprimanded for ordering paper and printer ink because it wasnt "essential".
Then theres the whole subsection of MN who would like the reintroduction of ration books and how much milk you're allowed per week.
Unbelievably for MN I do have to go out to work. If I go to Tesco metro to get lunch (I try not to gallivant wherever possible and do take lunch from home most days) the sandwiches, crisps, drinks and chocolate are all in the same aisle. ...if I'm in there pick up whatever I want including reduced price advent calenders
