@Hellotheresweet

Source?
Is that to me? It’s in most news reports it was first seen In September but the BMJ say it here

The news coming out of South Africa is really worrying, especially as it seems the mutations are similar.
Fucking hell, I'm so tired of being scared Sad.

Matt Hancock says tier 4 could last for months due to this new strain

Translation: We no longer have a clue how to handle this, and whoops we've allowed too many expectations to build up around vaccines, so maybe the "new strain" will get us out of a hole

And given that viruses mutate all the time, how convenient that this one has turned up right now

Meruem · 20/12/2020 13:41

I remember a time months ago when BJ said we’d all be back to normal by Christmas! (Didn’t believe it!). I’ve been lucky enough to be able to cope really well. But even I am now wondering where/when this is all going to end. They haven’t actually confirmed the vaccine will work on the new strain, just that they see no reason why it wouldn’t. Thats not the same to me as knowing it will. Even if it does, will it work in future mutations? I don’t know what the answer is but BJ definitely doesn’t help with his false “cheer” and “we’re nearly there folks”. People cope better with honesty, however hard it is to hear. Better to give people the worst case scenario and be able to lift them up if it’s not needed, than to give false promises that leave them feeling upset and angry.

FractionalGains · 20/12/2020 13:42

Tier 4 till April is just unthinkable. The long term lost years that will be caused doesn’t bear thinking about. I think there’s a risk that because covid patients die now and those whose lives will be shortened due to the economic disaster will die prematurely in the future that we don’t give enough thought to the latter. Poverty has a horrific effect on life expectancy.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/12/2020 13:42

Sorry, I should have said how convenient that the mutation's been publicised right now ...

Nerdygirl · 20/12/2020 13:42

It was also confirmed by the who on the Andrew marr show this morning as having been seen in September

TramaDollface · 20/12/2020 13:44

I feel completely lied to

cyclingmad · 20/12/2020 13:45

The vaccine isn't a cure its been said by scientists time n time again. Its just reduces rate of transmission. You can still catch it even with a vaccine but the rate of catching is much lower.

Its just like with the flu.

FrippEnos · 20/12/2020 13:46

@ElephantWhaleRabbit

It’s the same pattern every time with the government. Ignore the evidence, mock anyone who tells them they’re on the wrong path (including your own advisers), things get worse, suddenly take notice, dither, and at act at the last minute causing distress, confusion and panic, and more deaths. They’re truly incompetent.

You have missed
Pushed out poor information to other groups so that they will take the blame when it all goes to shit.

What I want to know is, why were only 300k people vaccinated in week 1? I thought there was capacity to vaccinate 1 million people per week?

IcedPurple · 20/12/2020 13:48

@FishyDog

It's quite clear that the tier 4 rules will need to be in place for months if people continue to not follow the rules. I live in London and you'd never know there was a lockdown with the number of people and cats about this morning!

Frankly, tier 4 is a walk in the park compared to the rules in other countries.

I'd like to see a proper lockdown implemented until the end of January at least- one hour of outdoor exercise per day (not endless gallivanting and going out for unnecessary reasons), one shopping trip per week (for essential food and medicine only, not wine and gin Hmm) and £100 rewards for neighbours who report people out for too long or too often.

The rule should be that unless you are a key worker or out for infrequent exercise or shopping, stay the fuck at home.

You've not been this excited since March. Admit it.

Once international travel starts up again, you could allievate the misery you'll feel at being unable to tell people to 'stay the fuck at home' by booking a (one way) flight to North Korea?

FassbendersWife · 20/12/2020 13:49

Remember that those vaccinating need to be vaccinated too – My dad (69 years old and a retired GP) has offered to do some vaccinations. Those who offered him the role said they would like him to start on the 4th of January. When he asked him about his own vaccination, prior to giving it to others, they had no plans, like they hadn't even thought about it! It's a complete shambles.

FrippEnos · 20/12/2020 13:50

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants

But can you imagine the whinging if Londoners were to get priority vaccines????

Do you actually mean those that would have a valid complaint about how london and the south east are once again being prioritised?

IcedPurple · 20/12/2020 13:50

Personally I'd like to see the French system of compulsory forms for going out and tough fines for breaches.

The same France which has some of the worst per capita Covid rates in the world?

Or a different France with which I am not familiar?

Nerdygirl · 20/12/2020 13:51

Why is it not classified as a high consequence infectious disease?

TheSunIsStillShining · 20/12/2020 13:51

Because we have a limited supply to vaccinate 400k people. When that's gone there is no more. And we don't know when more will be coming
Johan23 · 20/12/2020 13:51

@pennylane83. I thought that too. But, I can’t see the devolved governments going along with that

MaxNormal · 20/12/2020 13:52

stay the fuck at home

I dismiss anyone that parrots this as an out-and-out bawbag.

oakleaffy · 20/12/2020 13:54

@dreamingbohemian

So many people are already struggling, this is going to push a lot of people over the edge, financially and/or mentally.

You can tell this government is full of people who are totally insulated from all the consequences of their decisions

This

I just don't understand why Corona is so 'bad' compared to Cancers and traditional flu?

Cancer kills many more per year than Covid.

Goodness knows what will happen to the economy. It is very worrying.

treening · 20/12/2020 13:56

Yeah, that's worked so well in France after all.

This is where we've been going wrong, we've not had the cats under control 😁
dreamingbohemian · 20/12/2020 13:58

France is not doing much better than anyone else. People like the idea of the forms because it satisfies their Stasi instincts.

The message that 'if you go out you could be killing people' does not work anymore. Even after all these months, a lot of people do not know anyone who has been seriously ill or died from covid. The economic and social devastation, on the other hand, is really obvious. So they need to find some more persuasive messages to get people to follow the rules.

That's beside the point.

There are some people who would love nothing more than to spy on and report their neighbours, while feeling morally superior at the same time. Covid is simply an excuse. They are absolutely relishing this.
